RE: Green Hornet only available in 3D - they can sod right off

I actually emailed Cineworld last week to ask about The Green Hornet and why it wasn`t showing in 2D. Their response: Quote:
Unfortunately at the present time The Green Hornet will only be screened in 3D. The film distributors that have sold the reels to cineworld are not allowing a 2D format of the film to be screened at the present moment. Please be advised that there may be 2D screenings in the future
As the distributor isn`t allowing 2D it makes me think that the surcharge for 3D doesn`t just go to the cinema (I thought it was explained away as upgrade/running costs) and is actually enforced by the production/distribution company and split.

I personally won`t touch any movie in 3D anymore (headaches, expense and 3D being generally pointless), and haven`t since Avatar, so I`ll just wait for GH to appear on Lovefilm in 3 months time and then I`ll see if the poor reviews were right then.

RE: Coallision near collapse on student fee vote

I don`t really think that social background should really have much to do with what fees you pay (or defer since all you are actually doing is being given a compulsory long term loan). To me the University system should be elitist with only the brightest going - I`m amazed that no one seems to have suggested having the fees you pay linked to the grades you get at A-level (at least in the subjects linked to the course, General Studies isn`t worth anything), that way those who deserve to go to university through ability are massively subsidised or pay nothing and those who didn`t get the grades and/or want a 3 year social life have to pay through the nose.

Alternatively make all the funding money available as scholarships (lots and lots of the things), the best and brightest would get them, the rich most likely wouldn`t apply so there wouldn`t be a problem with being a lower social class.

A reduction in the number of students would also help, when I started my maths degree having gotten 3 As at A-level I was amazed that some people on the course got a D or E at their maths A-level. They either dropped out or scraped a 3rd but they should never have been there in the first place.

RE: Chris Ryan`s Strikeback...

I`ve got it recorded on my V+ Box but wasn`t 100% sure about watching it. I really only recorded it because Andrew Lincoln was in it and I wanted to check out his acting chops as he`s been cast as the lead in The Walking Dead series pilot. That said your `suitably impressed` moves it closer to getting a viewing. Ta.

RE: International bitching about a `fun` math question

I`ve got a maths degree and I`ve no idea what that BODMAS thing is.
Gareth, I`m a pedant so I have to point out that your solution is technically wrong and equals 124, though I`m sure you have the right answer in your head. Adding a ( before the first 5 and ) after the fourth 5 would make it spot on.

Stanz, the PEDMAS people on anther forum are spouting about is just a rule that says that you have to divide and multiply before you subtract and add - hence the brackets, anything inside brackets gets done first.

RE: password

The exact same thing happened to me a couple of months ago, I may be a sceptic but I automatically assumed it was a phishing scam. I just ignored it and it stopped after about a week or two. If you are using Hotmail or Livemail you can report it as phishing using the drop down box under `mark as` and it may stop quicker but if my experience was anything to go by they should stop in a few days.

RE: Guitar Hero Metallica

I picked it up too over Christmas but as it doesn`t give you access to any DLC I also ordered Rock Band for the 360 for only £7.47 from Tesco. Great price for another 60ish songs.

RE: Is there a programe that...

I used MP3 Gain a few years back to set the decibel levels on my Metallica tracks so going from an old album to a new album didn`t deafen me. From what I remember it was really easy to use and didn`t take too long to do and album though, obviously, the larger the batch you are changing, the longer it takes.

RE: Is Toy Story 3D still playing anywhere?

Toy Story was only released in 3D for one week, the week prior to Up`s release. I saw it and whilst it was nice to see Toy Story at the cinema in digital the 3D was just a gimmick, completely unnecessary and, if anything, distracted and detracted from what is a great movie.

I`m actually getting really sick of all the `3D` movies being released at the moment. A 3D film used to be a special event or a one off and I could understand the extra charge that they added. Now there seems to be a new 3D film released every other week and it`s no longer special, just another way to make it more expensive to go the the cinema. I purposefully went to see Up in 2D and honestly couldn`t see a single moment in that film where it`s being in 3D would have made it a better, more enjoyable, film. That said, I am intrigued by the Robert Zemekis` upcoming Christmas Carol as the 3D effect looks like it will be intrinsic to the film and the 2D version a poor imitation. If that`s the case and the film garners some praise I`ll probably try and see it in IMAX 3D which, from experience, is far superior to the run-of-the-mill local multiplex 3D

RE: What are you listening to right now?

Bruce Springsteen`s rather grand new album plus I`m trying some Tom Waits but he`s got so many albums I wouldn`t know where to start (please don`t say the beginning!). I`ve got the (cheap) `Used Songs 1973-80` from HMV but can anyone recommend any albums?

RE: anyone good at photoshop and want to earn a tenner

Chris beat me to a Gojira background, but I may as well post it anyway. I`ve been inspired in the past by the Empire Movie Mashups forum, if anyone is still bored, this week (which is probably ending soon) is sports.

Since The Jackal went for realism, I tried a stylistic approach though I might have a fiddle with it again since I`m bored.

RE: RROD :( first timer - what do I do?

They gave me a month free back in November too though my problem wasn`t an RROD but a fried graphics chip (though for some reason they replaced the DVD drive as well as the motherboard). I`ve got about 5 days left of my free month and I haven`t played a single game online, if I`d know I was that unsocial I would have given the code away!

RE: So, these mini laptops then...

Cheers for the replies, I`ve ordered a Samsung (I`m getting a white one simply because saving £4 was more important than the colour) from Dixons as the voucher was only for today and it gave the best price I`ve seen for it since the day before it was released .

As for not being able to access the I-Player, it won`t be a problem as the HDD will be filled with stuff I`ve already got saved as avi`s (the entire Seinfeld collection for one) which should last for a while. Other than that, the computer is going to be for checking emails, generally surfing the internet, writing a diary and organising the thousands of photos of New Zealand I plan on taking.

I`m surprised that I can`t find, other than reviewers, advocates for the Asus (as The Ogster points out they`re basically the same); if anything has stopped me from buying an Asus, it`s actually the choice they give - screen/OS/storage/colour Samsung only give you colour and that wasn`t a priority for me.

RE: So, these mini laptops then...

I`ve started to look for a netbook as I`m going to New Zealand March to travel for an extended period and I want to both keep in touch, surf the internet and watch a video or two and needs to have good battery life. I`ve narrowed the selection down to the Samsung NC10 or the Asus 1000 but I can`t make a decision as to which. The Samsung seems to have garnered huge amounts of praise from the media but other then reviews on Amazon I`ve not seen much written by ordinary people. The Asus has the pedigree (all the pedigree that can be obtained in just over a year) but doesn`t help me make a choice by providing different models 40Gb SSD (with 60Gb online storage) or 160Gb HDD; Windows or Linux.

Can anyone give a heads up about either of these models from personal experience, I have no knowledge of Linux and cannot find a single comment about the version of Linux that Asus use and whilst I`m not adverse to trying it I don`t want to be fiddling with a computer in half way around the world?

Dixons have the NC10 at £283 (using a £25 voucher) at the moment and Dabs have the Asus with Linux for £278 they`re good prices for them at the moment but can anyone hazard a guess at price drops in the next couple of months?

RE: Which stores would you like to see go bust next....

Quote:
W H Smith - Overpriced and crap selection of DVDs & CD
I worked in WH Smith`s one Christmas; they are a poor shop and since they don`t specialise in anything you`d think they`d be exactly the type of store to go bust. That said, they won`t since they`ve cornered the market in magazines and have stores at practically every train station and airport. Their main stores are probably being subsidised by all the station/airport shops and as long as they have them they`ll never go bust, they though, may move out of the town centres!

RE: Amazon MP3 Downloads - £3 off Xmas Day & Boxing Day

I bought both Elbow and Snow Patrol a few weeks ago off Amazon for £3 - the loss leader sort of worked - I`ve since bought three more Elbow albums just not from Amazon, Play had them in their 3 for £10 deal.

I`ve already downloaded for free this morning:
Hard-Fi - Once Upon a Time in the West
Rush - Spirit of our Radio: Greatest Hits

Thank you Amazon!

I`ve still got a couple of unused accounts so was wondering if anyone can recommend anything in the £3 range; Fall Out Boy, The Ting Tings and Morcheeba have caught my eye.

RE: sharing vga out with pc monitor and lcd

My brother uses a VGA splitter to two 19" monitors at the same time but it vastly reduces the power (or the power of the signal) going to each which meant that the brightness needed to be bumped up to full on both monitors. That may be part of the problem, the resolution your computer is set to could also be the problem. If they don`t have the same aspect ratio/optimum resolution/refresh rates that could be could be causing the blurring. It`s probably going to insult your intelligence but, have you had a play around with the display settings?

RE: The Day the Earth Stood Still - Remake

Quote:
with a message that, sadly, hasn`t changed in over 50 years
Not true, the original was made during the cold war and shortly after creating the atomic bomb. Klatu came to earth to say `we didn`t mind you killing yourselves but now, with rockets and the bomb, you are becoming a threat to us, stop it and play nice or we`ll kill you.` Since there`s not been any large scale wars and the new one can`t really aim itself at terrorists, it has gone for the green message and says `you`re killing the planet, stop it or we`ll kill you`. The message has changed and it needed to, the old message would still have worked but would have been unfocussed, aimed at individuals rather than countries; the new message is upto date, drawing on one of the west`s prominent problems/talking points.

RE: RROD :( first timer - what do I do?

Damn Schadenfreude! I read this thread this morning and felt slightly smug that I have had my 360 for about a year and had no sign of any overheating or RROD. Tonight whilst playing Fable 2 the picture became speckled with blue and green squares (though weirdly only during the game, not the menus) after a couple of minutes I got frustrated and restarted the machine only to get a large error message and then to look under my desk and see the RROD! >:(

I bought it from Gamestation 26th of November last year and according to their website Quote:
Question: My console is broken, do you offer a repairs service?
Answer: If you have purchased the console from us and it is under warranty, please call us at 0845 345 0335 to speak with us about your issue. If your item is outside of this period or you have not purchased the item from us, then unfortunately, no, Gamestation do not offer a repairs service at this time.
Since it is still within the first year I`m going to see if they will replace it (a 60gb replacement would be nice) but I`m guessing they`ll just send me in the direction of Microsoft.

Out of interest, when you send it to get repaired/replaced, I`m assuming they copy all the saved games over to the new console also, is it true that you can only run the Arcade games when connected to Live once it has been repaired as I like to play the occasional Arcade game but rarely connect to the internet?

EDIT: Only the bottom right `ring` light flashes and I get the error message E74 which seems slightly different from the RROD - Google is telling me that it is a failure in the graphics chip and not the usual RROD as such not covered under the extended warranty. Suddenly I am very happy it`s happened two weeks shy of the 1 year mark!

RE: Xbox HD-DVD Player add-on- £45

The drive is now down to £39.99 at Amazon, Game and Gamestation. Can anyone tell me if it comes bundled with a remote as I watch a lot of divx using an external HD and a remote would be doubly useful if I got the drive?

It doesn`t sound like Fox has managed to stop the movie, according to the official website filming wrapped on 19th February and they are now onto post production.

The picture of Rorschach they have at the top of the blog looks pretty impressive as well.

RE: I`ve got a red ring :-(

I bought a 360 last month and was just wondering if the warranty that is covering all your RROD is a free 12 month one which was extended (again free) to three years or is it one you paid for? Inside the console packaging was a flyer from Microsoft advertising a warranty or insurance or something similar costing £60 (ish) which was for three years, well one but extended to three for free.

I`m just a bit confused as I`ve heard of so many people getting their consoles RRed and then replaced easily but it just seemed unlikely that all these people would have shelled out £60 for a one year warranty as it seems a tad expensive.

Cheers

RE: Do you ever get the urge to......

I have had that urge, I have quit my job and my last day is this Friday :D . I`ve been in my current job 18 months (not long I know, but it is my first job out of Uni) and whilst they probably overpay me for what I do I find it really boring because everything is just too easy. Luckily, when I started I told them I was only in it for the money and would quit in about 18 months time and they were OK with that. Now I have about £13k saved up and plan to go and see some of the world, or just relax on a foreign beach for as long as the money lasts.

All I know is that this gold says it was the best mission ever.

RE: For the specs wearers

If you are willing to look outside the high street and already know your prescription try www.glassesdirect.co.uk, I`ve been wearing a pair from their £15 range for a year and they seem pretty reliable and perfectly adequate for the price. Their delivery is a bit slow but the price of the glasses more than makes up for it.

You would only not get jobseekers allowance if you had stupid amount of money in the bank that was making enough interest to live off,
Not true, when I finished uni a year and a half ago I went to claim JSA and because I had my Student Loan of £9,000 ish in a savings account and thus had more than the limit (£3,000 think) I was going to get didly squat bar my national Insurance contributions.

That said I`d echo what everyone else is saying RE temp agencies, that`s what I did after giving up on JSA and quickly landed a permanent job through them. Either that or find out who the work is being outsourced to and try and get the same job with them, you`ll probably find they pay slightly more too.

RE: Smokin aces - Adult, Violent, Sweary Fun

Just been to seen this and to be honest I thought it was a mess, there were some good parts to it but they were on the whole the gratuitous violence. The dialogue was mumbled in a way reminiscent of Miami Vice and as a result the plot (which was probably paper thin) was almost impossible to follow. Furthermore there seemed to several tranches of the plot which were inserted to simply to find a place for a single joke (the ADD kid with the nunchucks was the main culprit) as a result it seemed over-long.

RE: Pan`s Labyrinth - nowhere to be seen

Considering Cineworld are basically passing the buck and saying it is the distibutors fault for not releasing enough copies of the film why don`t those of you who can`t see it and feel like complaining email the distributor, Optimum Releasing, and ask why they have not given the film a more widespread release.

I`m personally going for another ploy and buying a ticket for Pan`s Ladyrinth every time I go to the cinema to see something else. I won`t cost me anything as I have the unlimited card but maybe higher attendances will convince Optimum that a more widespread release is worthwhile.

FYI, IMDB show the estimated budget for the film as €7,000,000, makes you wonder why all the major Hollywood films need budgets of hundreds of millions of dollars when something this beautiful can be made for a fraction of the cost?
