For the specs wearers

bowfer (Elite) posted this on Monday, 26th March 2007, 09:46

Anyone know of any decent deals going around ( two for one,or free sunglasses etc.)
I just need a new spare pair,so I don`t intend spending a fortune.
There seems to have been an explosion of opticians (Tesco,Asda etc.),so I`m just wondering if anyone`s taken advantage.

Am sure you would know this - but Specsavers have decent deals most of the time... give them a look-see?

I found Boots/Asda/Tesco to be utterly useless - at least London ones.

Bit wary of specsavers, after my first wife`s glasses literally fell apart in the pub one night.
There she was, standing there enjoying a glass of wine or a fruit based drink.
Ping went her frames, plop went one of the lenses.

Lad here reports Tesco opticians alright, but doesn`t know if they`ve any deals on.
The optician part of Tesco`s website is pish.

Mrs MS999 works for them, they do indeed have many deals on all of teh time, did you try taking the glasses back that failed... in my experience they always replace/repair/

Theres always one or two. I dont think Ive ever bought `just` a pair of specs, always get at least a discount or a free pair. I think Boots and Specsavers have got a free pair offer going.

I got a pair of prescription sunnies with my last pair of specs. I dont know how any driver who wears glasses can do without them, to be honest. You can be quite cute with the free pair. When I got mine, the free glasses werent that great, but it turned out that the optician I go to puts a monetary value on your free pair that you can actually put towards a decent pair of specs. I got a pair of super fly prescription Calvin Klein sunnies for about 45 quid.

Its actually quite an odd thing, getting your eyes tested at somewhere like boots, then asking for your prescription so you can bugger of and get your glasses somewhere else. They try their best to stop you from doing it. A few people I know actually didnt realise that they could do it....

I use specsavers and find them reasonable.
But the cheaper glasses (£75 - £95) that i get fall apart quite quickly.
Might go for more expensive designer ones next time.

I got my 2 for 1 even when they didn`t have the offer, you just have to ask, they never turn away business, :)

Opticians are legally bound to provide you with your prescription, the idea being that you don`t have to get your eyes tested again in an emergency.
That`s what I`m doing.
The optician I normally use is waaaay too expensive for glasses that I will only ever use as spares,so I`m taking his prescription and going the cheap route.
The pair I wear on a day-to-day basis were over £400 from the bugger. :/
I am scarily short-sighted though,so I have to go for the most expensive ultra-thin lenses, otherwise I`d end up looking like Cosmo Smallpiece.

was going to say exactly the same...you dont have to ask they just give you the prescription after the test. Of course they`ll try and get you to choose a new pair there and then if the prescription has changed since previous test. My last lot came from specsavers(eye test from D&A) and as has been said they normally have offers all year round.

Don`t know if it`s still an option, but I signed up for contacts through D&A for a couple of months and got my Reiss glasses/lenses half price, would be great, but I seem to be allergic to the frame metal :(

Talking of being allergic, Do any of you get irritated by the little rubber pads that rest on the bridge of your nose?
