How much do you get per week on the dole ?

MADTheOgster (Elite Donator) posted this on Wednesday, 14th March 2007, 13:09

my employers talking about outsourcing our entire department, which would mean me out of work, & as i`ve never been unemployed, i`m just curious, (& obviously fairly worried :/ )

thanks in advance.

It`s about £42 a week (maybe little bit more), but then there`s housing benefit on top.

Edit- Not sure what the current situation is but I wouldn`t rely on housing benefit, it took about 4months for them to process my claim after I finished university so basically I had to use all my dole money to pay my £55 a week rent (with the difference borrowed from my parents)

Hard times, hard times, :(

I got the money from the date of my claim in the end but by then I was working again.

I may be wrong, but I don`t think you will. I`m sure you get some money towards your mortgage repayments, I`m not sure because I`m not sure if it`s actually jobseekers allowance the person I`m thinking of is on or it`s a different kind of allowance.

Edit- Think it was income support that they were on, details here, from a quick glance I`m not sure if you would be eligable.

Start looking for a job now, you won`t get any dole money (job seekers allowance), until you are totally broke, if you have redundancy money, holiday money, or any other benefits from your employer, you have to live on that before they decide to give you JSA, which isn`t a lot.

Filling out one of those forms is the biggest ball ache that I just gave up and looked for a job myself. What you could do is sign up with a temping agency, then at least you have a steady cash flow, until you find yourself a proper job.

Because of this announcement all the staff at your place will now be looking for jobs elsewhere, so I suggest is to start looking.

Dole varies depending on age but if you`re 25 or over it will be £60 a week from April. even if you`ve got savings you hould be entitled to contribution based JSA for 6 months before it becomes income based JSA. You won`t have to pay council tax if your savings are within a certain limit and if you`re unlucky enough to remain unemployed for more than nine months you can receive income support payments to cover the interest on your mortgage - if you don`t ask about this they won`t tell you..

Unless you are under 22 its a weeks pay for every year you have worked there (half a week for under 22s) dont let them f*** you with that.

But, yeah, you are much better off getting down the agencies. Last time I was made redundant, the woman gave me my forms and effectively told me that i would get nothing, so i went straight to an agency and got some grunt work while I found another job.

If you make it clear you may need time off for interviews, most agencies are good about it.

Also, if you do get redundancy, it might be worth thinking about working for yourself. You are pretty handy with PCs and the like, so a bit of redundancy cash spent on adverts and its `Ogsters PC Doctors` or something.
