RROD :( first timer - what do I do?

JohnnyTV (Elite) posted this on Monday, 10th November 2008, 00:19

Typical, just as I`m nearing the end of Fable 2 and buy GoW2 eh. Well the machine was only purchased earlier this year (from shopto.net) so is still under warranty.

It`s one of the new premiums with the HDMI port and 175w power block (which I thought were meant to be RROD-proof - obviously not)

So seeing as I know so many of you have had this before, do I go straight to shopto or will they pass me on to MS? I know I could have just emailed them, but instead of waiting 48hrs to get a reply I thought I`d ask you lot so I go to the right place.

Also either way how long am I looking at before getting it back? Is it still a couple of weeks?

Cheers guys

Hi..

I`m pretty sure you can only do a swop via the store where purchased if it`s within a month of the original date the 360 was brought...After that, you need to contact MS.

My sons was returned within 6 days (quite impressed with that)

Any info you need is here.....

Here ya go matey..

I would try and get shopto to sort it if possible as they may just swap the console for another one and therefore it will all go a bit quicker for you. However, if their like Comet when I first had mine they will push you in the direction of MS, when you throw your statutory rights at them and demand that they sort it out then they will just say that you can give it them to sort out but all they will do is send it to MS on your behalf.
I had one (of 4) go in August and the whole process from start to finish took about 2 weeks.

1. register the 360`s serial number with M$ if you haven`t already.
2. on the xbox.com/live website, register for a repair.
3. enter collection details.
4. print consignment labels.
5. wait for UPS to collect.

ours went earlier this year, took around 7 ~ 8 days from collection
to us receiving the fixed console.

Cheers all, have emailed shopto just in case they can swap it, otherwise will use the info above (which I think is what will happen) so thanks a lot :) hopefully it won`t be too long before I can get back online!

Yup as expected shopto simply said they`d only be able to send the console to MS so have taken Splinter cells steps above to get things in motion.

Thanks again for the help, will let you know how I get on

Damn Schadenfreude! I read this thread this morning and felt slightly smug that I have had my 360 for about a year and had no sign of any overheating or RROD. Tonight whilst playing Fable 2 the picture became speckled with blue and green squares (though weirdly only during the game, not the menus) after a couple of minutes I got frustrated and restarted the machine only to get a large error message and then to look under my desk and see the RROD! >:(

I bought it from Gamestation 26th of November last year and according to their website Quote:
Question: My console is broken, do you offer a repairs service?
Answer: If you have purchased the console from us and it is under warranty, please call us at 0845 345 0335 to speak with us about your issue. If your item is outside of this period or you have not purchased the item from us, then unfortunately, no, Gamestation do not offer a repairs service at this time.
Since it is still within the first year I`m going to see if they will replace it (a 60gb replacement would be nice) but I`m guessing they`ll just send me in the direction of Microsoft.

Out of interest, when you send it to get repaired/replaced, I`m assuming they copy all the saved games over to the new console also, is it true that you can only run the Arcade games when connected to Live once it has been repaired as I like to play the occasional Arcade game but rarely connect to the internet?

EDIT: Only the bottom right `ring` light flashes and I get the error message E74 which seems slightly different from the RROD - Google is telling me that it is a failure in the graphics chip and not the usual RROD as such not covered under the extended warranty. Suddenly I am very happy it`s happened two weeks shy of the 1 year mark!

Have you ever drunk Baileys from a shoe?

Don`t send the hard drive, controllers or cables just send the console.

You just have to download them again (free)

They will ask you to just send your console off so you will keep the hard drive with your saves on. In the event they decide your hard drive may be faulty they may ask for it back aswell but you can kiss your game saves goodbye then as they won`t transfer them.
As far as arcade games go I do not know sorry as my Xbox is permanently connected to Live. I thought that you always needed to be connected to Live in order to play arcade games though as it needs to verify that you have purchased the arcade game.

I still can`t get over the Xbox failures that people keep having. I thought they`d resolved the whole RROD issue (which they said was caused by overheating)?

I assumed that the move towards the 45nm chips and improved airflow etc. meant they wouldn`t have that anymore.

I think they should be offering a service that auto-backs up your save games if you`re an Xbox live member just in case this sort of thing happens.
