RE: I`m confused about NTSC (Toshiba 210 and Philips 28PW6515)

I wouldn`t worry, when i bought my old dvd player from Richer Sounds they said that all of their players output Pal 60hz.

Even it didn`t, chances are your tv will be able to handle the ntsc signal anyway!

RE: help - im new to DVD

You can`t buy multiregion players from places like Currys or Comet despite what their employees say (a mate of mine was told it was multiregion because it could play ntsc discs). You can remote hack some, but the better makes (like Toshiba, Sony and Pioneer can`t be hacked with the remote)

The only place on the not on the internet i know of is Richer sounds that sell them multiregion. Look at their website at www.richersounds.com to get an idea of the prices (although i wouldn`t advise buying from the website as the customer service is not meant to be very good, but the shop itself is fine)

I would advise the Toshiba SD 210e on your budget.

RE: amazon £5 coupon.... FREE

I`m still waiting for both of them, but i did get Rollcage for the pc from lineone :)

RE: Best place to get rid of old discs?

same here eehpcm_eseehc[at]moc.oohay

RE: Which version of Saving Private Ryan?

If you can`t find the DD version cheaper than the DTS version, let me know and i`ll do a swap with you (my DD version is in brand new condition anyway).

RE: Star Wars Episode 1

I would get the region 2 version (thats what i have done). It comes out a day earlier and its pal, not ntsc (which is the better one)

RE: does any one here own a sony DAV-S300???

I own one, and the difference between the dolby prologic on my tv and the dts surround is amazing (get gladiator if you don`t have it, just to show off the system)!

I definitely recommend it, the cheapest i have found it is about £470 multiregion, so don`t pay anymore than this for it.

Hope this helps you!

RE: Die Hard has gone up in Price!

Its still £39.99 at www.futureent.com

RE: i have a few questions about sony DAV-S300

I recently bought this as well, and a good option tthat has been added is an extra subwoofer input. This means that if you don`t think the bass is up to much (i think it is, but others may disagree) you can buy an more powerful active one. The only prob for most people maybe the lack of a scart socket on the player, but you can get converters for s-video to scart (luckily my tv has an s-video input anyway). Picture and sound are excellent though.

I managed to get it modded for only £59 by getting a voucher from www.dvdtimes.co.uk so i would just do that instead.

RE: Pioneer XV-DV55 Home Theatre set-up

I don`t have that system but do have a similar one (sony davs300) and on that you need to use composite cables to link it to the video in bit (these cables weren`t supplied with my player, so i haven`t bothered) in the same way you link a vcr. It wouldn`t come through in 5.1 anyway, only pro-logic.

Hope any of this helps.

RE: Who IS the worst actor EVER ?

Its a tie between Arnie and Keanu Reeves.

Just watch The Terminator and Bill and Ted`s Excellent Adventure. They weren`t acting, they were being themselves!!!!

RE: movies you like which no-one else does...

I quite liked Deep Impact and the Perfect Storm, but no-one i know likes them that much.

RE: Whats the last DVD everyone bought?

Predator box set!

Finally i can hear Arnie`s great lines in glorious 5.1!!!

"Get to ze chopper!!!!!"

RE: Help needed !!

Ok, then:

RGB, s-video and composite video are different types of video signal from the dvd player to the tv. RGB (red, green, blue) has the best picture quality out of the three you mentioned, then s-video, then composite video (most dvd players are s-video and rgb capable, and can usually go through just a scart cable)

You do need an amplifier to use an in-built decoder (it must have 6 inputs for Dolby Digital and DTS sound, and 7 for DTS ES which is 6.1)

As for digital audio, i`m pretty sure that just refers to DTS and Dolby Digital formats.

Hope any of that helps!

RE: Help needed I need to buy a AV system with limited budget any ideas ?

See my earlier reply in the thread "what sound system should i get"!

Hope this helps!

RE: Whats the first dvd everyone bought?

R2: Sleepy Hollow & Mystery Men (bought at the same time)
R1: Toy Story 1 & 2 : Two disc set

RE: What sound system should i get?

Ive read in a magazine that the Cambridge Soundworks Playworks DTT3500 Digital is really good (it got 10/10, but its Dolby Digital, not DTS). Its £250, and although its primarily for PCs, you can link it to a dvd player (its got 30w sub, 21w centre and 7w satellites, which is better than the Videologic DD, which suffers from hissing noises)

P.S. I have a DTS system, and on most discs it kicks DD`s arse (Gladiator).

Hope any of this helps!

RE: YES BUY IT NOW

see my post above about the £50 upgrade voucher, its the cheapest i`ve seen it!

RE: what can cause a coloured patch on tv screens -

Is it a widescreen tv? Some of them don`t like still pictures (like dvd menus) and can cause patches like that (i found that the "Snatch" dvd menu really affects my tv). In this case, its nothing to worry about, just play the disc or turn the tv off then on again and it will be fine.

If you dont think its this, i would get it sorted quickly (otherwise it can be permanently damaged). You could try removing all magnetic sources nearby and keeping the tv off for a few hours, which is what you are meant to do if there is any speaker interference.

Hope any of this helps.

RE: How much can i bring back into the UK from the US???

Never buy them from Tower Records. I went to one and dvds were $25+ (plus, all the prices are without sale tax, which is around 8%). I bought all my dvds from supermarkets like Wal-mart and K-mart for under $20 each (about £14).

I didn`t declare them, you can get really stung by the additional charges they make (and i think they take them off you if you can`t afford the fees).

RE: YES BUY IT NOW

Well, it takes a bit of time to do. Firstly, i bought it from http://www.comet.co.uk for £399 (incl delivery and 3 dvds). I then sent it off to http://www.upgradeheaven.co.uk using the upgrade for £50 voucher (you have to send it to them yourself, but they mod it and return it for you. The voucher is here: http://www.dvdtimes.org.uk/uheaventoken.html ) Sending it off via £500 insured Parcelforce Standard cost me about £9, so it will cost me in total about £459 (with 3 dvds). All i do now is wait, but all-in-all the process would have taken about 1 and a half weeks.

Alternatively, you could go to http://www.leconcepts.com and get one for £469 incl. a s-video to scart cable for free (delivery is around £10).

Hope this helps, and if you need any more help, let me know.

RE: YES BUY IT NOW

He`s right, there is a lot of fine tuning that can be done (which is quite simple) which makes it all worth while. Don`t be put off if you might think that its difficult to set-up.

P.S. Mine`s just been sent off to get modded in the very (un)capable hands of Parcel Force. Dispatched 7.00am, any guesses on how many pieces its in by now?

RE: Is the DAV-S300 worth the plunge???

I agree, i`ve heard it is better, but decided to go for the dav s300 because i could get it multiregion for £460 with 3 dvds, whereas the cheapest i have seen the dv-55 is £550.

RE: Is the DAV-S300 worth the plunge???

i recieved my dav s300 today, i took that offer from comet (you get 3 dvds with it as well!!). I found it quite easy to set up (colour coded speaker cables). Its got a radio tuner and i think the cd playback from it is also really good (although it cannot play cd-r or cd-rw which is a bit annoying). One thing that i would advise is that you buy a better video cable (i got a £20 s-video as there is no scart socket) as all you get in the box is a composite cable. I`m planning to get the machine upgraded next week, but not sure where the best place to go is yet!

BTW the speakers are 20w each and can go very loud (as my neighbours found out today).

P.S. Geo, i think the region 0 dvd you have maybe be an ntsc disc which would explain the black and white picture (if you tv cannot handle the ntsc signal).

Hope any of this helps!

RE: cheap dvd`s

I recently bought Terminator 2, and the cheapest i could find it was at www.play247.com forr £17.99 (and you`re right, its only availible on region 1). Rocky 1 (r1) is at www.futureent.com under the cheap dvd section for £10.99. Hope any of this helps!!!

RE: Richer sounds - rip off!!!!

thanks for the replies. i went to them in watford and picked up a catalogue (stating the price for the multiregion machine at £550). I asked them about the price on the website but they just said that the costs of running the store meant that the prices would be higher. I still think that £90 over the website price is a bit extreme though (but there is a delivery cost if ordering from their site).

Not too bothered though, picked up the machine for £400 at comet.co.uk and it comes with 3 dvds (getting it modded next week for around £60). Thanks for your help!!

Richer sounds - rip off!!!!

Does anyone know the price of the multiregion Sony DAVS300 in a Richer Sounds shop? I rang the watford store and they said it was £595, far higher than anywhere i have seen it (incl. their own website), so i was wondering if its the same where you live.

RE: Taking bets now - who thinks techtronics will send back a working player ?

Threaten them with legal action, they were very quick to respond when i did!!!

RE: DVD PURITY TEST 16%!!
