Is the DAV-S300 worth the plunge???

r8sso (Elite) posted this on Sunday, 24th June 2001, 15:43

I`ve been after a new DVD player for the last few weeks and the dav-s300 has really caught my eye. Apart from looking the part it seems to be jam packed with all the latest features on the market. My only concern was the small speakers that come with it, can they really pump out good quality sound?! Also, the fact that it isn`t a multi-region player doesn`t help either, how risky is it getting your DVD player chipped???

Any feedback will be appreciated,
Ross.

PS. comet.co.uk are selling this for 396.65...can anywhere else beat this?

Hi i Think SONY DVA S-300 is really cool, but the settings are really complicated they are not as straight as it should be. Anyways may be i am new user that is why.
No the problem i have is. Some of the DVD`s work but the picture is in Black and White, i loose colors while playing. But if i play the same DVd is a diff. DVD it works. SO i don`t know whther i am missing some kind of settings or What, By the way DVD is marked as all region. If someone could help me sort out this problem, it would be great

Thanks

i recieved my dav s300 today, i took that offer from comet (you get 3 dvds with it as well!!). I found it quite easy to set up (colour coded speaker cables). Its got a radio tuner and i think the cd playback from it is also really good (although it cannot play cd-r or cd-rw which is a bit annoying). One thing that i would advise is that you buy a better video cable (i got a £20 s-video as there is no scart socket) as all you get in the box is a composite cable. I`m planning to get the machine upgraded next week, but not sure where the best place to go is yet!

BTW the speakers are 20w each and can go very loud (as my neighbours found out today).

P.S. Geo, i think the region 0 dvd you have maybe be an ntsc disc which would explain the black and white picture (if you tv cannot handle the ntsc signal).

Hope any of this helps!

Hi geo. Your problem with black & white picture with DVD marked as all region is that they are in NTSC. Your TV have problem displaying it. It may be an older model that does not support this format. UK uses PAL.

HI,
the DAV-S300 caught my attention to this new category - Home Theatre In A Box. Since I don`t have too much space it looked just perfectly made for me.
Well, before buying I did lots of research and found the Pioneer HTZ-55DV to be superior to it in some fields. The most obvious: Sony`s subwoofer is not powered. As a consequence, it doesn`t deliver the room shaking that the Pioneer does. Also, the Pioneer has a design that`s very interesting and attractive and an overall image and sound quality (DVD, AM/FM & CD) that I find somewhat superior to Sony`s. It`s fully featured, fast loading, image perfect, sound delicious.
I recommend that you take a look at it before deciding.

Mine is also multi-region, but it doesn`t select it automatically like my previous DV 414, I`ve to change it manually.

José Azevedo

Forgot to say:
- In Europe, the HTZ 55DV is named NS 55DV.
- It plays CDs, CDRs, CDRWs, VCDs and DVDs.

I agree, i`ve heard it is better, but decided to go for the dav s300 because i could get it multiregion for £460 with 3 dvds, whereas the cheapest i have seen the dv-55 is £550.

He`s right, there is a lot of fine tuning that can be done (which is quite simple) which makes it all worth while. Don`t be put off if you might think that its difficult to set-up.

P.S. Mine`s just been sent off to get modded in the very (un)capable hands of Parcel Force. Dispatched 7.00am, any guesses on how many pieces its in by now?
