Help needed !!

albini13 (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Tuesday, 3rd July 2001, 19:10

Hi,

Could someone in the know please help me out with a few translations ?

Firstly, what is s-video and what is composite video AV ? What exactly do they do ?

What does RGB mean ?

What is digital audio and how does it work ?

What is composite video ?

If a DVD player has a 5.1 decoder inbuilt, does that mean that you need a amplifier to exploit that ?

Please could you answer these questions as if i`m a five year old. Obviously from this thread you have noticed i`m not the brightest star in the sky, so if you could help me out i would be extremely grateful. Thanks a lot,

Gavin

Ok, then:

RGB, s-video and composite video are different types of video signal from the dvd player to the tv. RGB (red, green, blue) has the best picture quality out of the three you mentioned, then s-video, then composite video (most dvd players are s-video and rgb capable, and can usually go through just a scart cable)

You do need an amplifier to use an in-built decoder (it must have 6 inputs for Dolby Digital and DTS sound, and 7 for DTS ES which is 6.1)

As for digital audio, i`m pretty sure that just refers to DTS and Dolby Digital formats.

Hope any of that helps!
