RE: What studios do Play USA NOT ship in bi-lingual covers?

Yes they ship bilingual French/English covers, which I dont like, but not all discs they ship are like this. I know Disney/Miramax and Universal are, but I wondered about the rest. Can anyone help?

What studios do Play USA NOT ship in bi-lingual covers?

I`ve gotten Disney/Miramax and Universal DVDs of them with annoying bilingual covers. Is this the case with Fox,Warners etc.?

RE: Christmas Invasion: So who was burgled Christmas Day?

Well, this is the thing, I hadn`t smoked anything. I hadnt even drunk any alcohol, as I was driving. I was about to do both in the comfort of my own home! This was stone cold sober reality. Yeah, two Garda cars and the army: definitely got value on my taxes that night.

Christmas Invasion: So who was burgled Christmas Day?

Twas a Christmas night and nothing was stirring...there I was back in my flat at 1am, after spending a nice Christmas day with my parents. Rolled a lovely spliff and had a large bottle of Smirnoff Ice ready to wash it down. Then came the thuds. Several loud thuds at the back of the house. Initially I put it down to someone coming home p***ed. But they got louder. Off to the bedroom to suss it out. As I entered the bedroom, more thuds and then a loud CRASH, which of course stopped me in my tracks with that WTF? look on my face. I peeked out from beneath the curtains: two twenty-something gentlemen in dark clothes trying to hammer their way into the flat behind me. Okay. Christmas night fellas?!! Don`t you have yer own homes to go to?!!

I disconnected my modem to plug in the landline and call the police (why I didnt use my cell phone I don`t know). While I`m giving the skinny to the cops, louder thuds come from my bedroom then another CRASH as MY window goes in. The police hear this on the line. Live Crime on the airwaves! "We`re on our way." I`m told. First things first: hide the drugs. I stash my recreational doobie and grab the baseball bat I bought for this very occassion but thought I`d never have to use. All was quiet now. Within 3 minutes two squad cars sped up to my house (the station is only a few streets away), two groups of Garda ran in different directions. I unlocked my door and went outside - sans baseball bat. Then the detectives arrived - Christmas is a slow night one would imagine. While I`m giving the Garda the lowdown, the army arrive. Yes, the Army! An Irish army patrol jeep with four armed troopers - Jazus, 10 minutes ago I was alone with my Smirnoff and spliff, about to watch R1 Sin City special edition on my home theatre and now I`m surrounded! Anyway, they exchange words with the police and are on their way - Christmas being a slow night for the armed forces too it seems.

They nab one of the burglers, who has badly cut himself on my window leaving it covered in blood. (it`s double glazzed - he only got through one pane) And soon enough all is quiet, I`m back on my couch alone in desperate need of a doobie and a stiff drink.

Dang, what a night.

RE: The Amityville Horror - review

Same old fast cutting predictable s***e. Our standards are being systematically lowered. Broke the first rule of horror: be scary. It wasn`t.

RE: Which TV should I buy, LCD or Plasma?

What about burn in? With most TV stations having logos in the corner of the screen and watching sports with the constant logos and score charts, I`d be well p***ed off if I start seeing ghosted logos after a year or two of viewing. Plus there`s the X-box factor with the HUD display.

RE: DOCTOR WHO - New Series anticipation thread...

I saw the first episode a few days ago and really enjoyed it. I never thought I see the day Doctor Who was done with a propper budget and by professionals who have as much fondness as the fans. The show has not been "sexed up", at least going by the first episode, and is obviously aimed at a wide audience, with a simple tale involving the Autons as a vehicle to introduce the new cast. Christopher Ecelson is even better than you imagine and Billie Piper burries any ghosts of Bonnie Langford. Really looking forward to see how the show builds from here! Battestar Galactica AND Doctor Who back on TV...who`d of thunk it!

One thing I noticed in the credits is that Ecelson is listed as "Doctor Who" and not "the Doctor".

RE: Did you hear the one about the Irish bank robbers?

Just because you dont give a toss if somebody insults your nationality doesnt mean other people dont. The words you chose imply the accent. If those bank robbers had been of another ethnic group, like Pakistani or Chinese, and stereo-typical languge used to represent them it would be no less offensive.

RE: Did you hear the one about the Irish bank robbers?

"How many English men does it take to guard a bank?"

I find the racial stereo-typing insulting. The words you chose are not even indicitive of any Northern Ireland accent, so not only is it insulting, its inaccurate.

RE: Who do you share your birthday with?

Nov 27th: Jimi Hendrix, Bruce Lee and me.

RE: Irish Film Censor`s Classifications

The short answer is that here in Ireland violence is more of an issue than sex when it comes to our film certs. For example, both FROM DUSK TIL DAWN and NATURUAL BORN KILLERS were banned here. Though in recent times we did get the headbutt version of EPISODE 2 in our cinemas. Plus generally kids movies that get a PG in the UK tend to be G certed in Ireland. Apparently Irish toddlers are psycholigially thick skined!

As a result of a mass of complaints about BAD SANTA from idiotic parents who took their kids to see it despite it`s 15PG cert- never mind the chick in tight leather pants with her toung in Billy Bob`s ear on the poster - the irish film censor is about to change our certs again, creating a new 16 cert, which means that any film labeled as such can only be seen be 16 and over. Currently 15PG means you can go if you`re under age if you are with a "parent or guardian". Since this came in a few years ago I look out the projection booth window where I work and see masses of kids at unsuitable films as their parents can save on the babysitting.

RE: Did anyone record that C4 documentary on Richard Linklater?

Sure, that would be fine. Many thanks! Can you email me at susrev[at]ten.mocrie, then I`ll send you my address :)

RE: Did anyone record that C4 documentary on Richard Linklater?

You`d need a second video recorder to transfer onto another tape. Perhaps when you`ve wached it could you post the it to me. I`ll copy it and post it back to you? I`m a big Richard Linklater fan, would be much obliged!

RE: Ong Bak - any good?

I found this to be quite disappointing. Tony Jaa is most definitely a hugely talented acrobat and martial artisit, but has no screen presence or even Chan-like acting abilities. The movie itself is not a cheap knock off, it looks like it had a solid budget and is pretty defly directed, but even with its entertaining enough supporting cast it falls flat.

I purchased the DVD on ebay, a hacked version of the offical double disc Thai DVD, with English Subtites added by the hacker to the menu. Subs were grand, lots of suplements. Pity about the film.

Did anyone record that C4 documentary on Richard Linklater?

If so, any chance you could burn me a copy on DVD or VHS? I will pay for the blank, package and postage etc.

RE: New Police Story @ cd-wow

Did anyone buy the Limited Edition Box set version of this? If you did, what the hell is that steel clip/stand thing suppose to do or be?

RE: Advice needed: which is better, regular widescreen tv or rear projection tv?

Unfortunately we dont have Comet in Dublin. Great info though. Much to consider. Many thanks, Jimbo!

RE: Helooooo! AVP special

Our standards are being systematically loward. It doesnt matter how EXTREME the DVD is, the film is still wanting. But we buy it anyway. And Murdock gets a bigger pool. And Paul W. Anderson gets to manufacture more mediocrity.

RE: Which macrovision lead?

That web address doesnt exist. Can anyone post the correct one?

Advice needed: which is better, regular widescreen tv or rear projection tv?

I`m in the process of spending a chunk of cash on a basic home theatre set-up and need some advice on chosing either a 32inch flat screen or a 42 inch rear projection. The rear projection is about €400 more, but I can afford it. So baiscally, is worth it to go for rear projection (besides of course that its 10 inches bigger!)? What are the pros & cons? Is the picture quality good, better compared to the TV? Can I use my X-box on it safely? Both models I`m looking at are Sony. But its hard to tell in the showroom one way or the other. Any advice appreciated.

Please recommend a Region 1 supplier!

I used to get my R1 dvds from Play, but there habbit of supplying Canadian editions but advertisg US edition covers has caught me out one time too many. Can anybody recommenend an alternative fast reliable R1 supplier? Do CD-WOW puls this fast one with Canadian editions?

RE: Ju-on - Which film are you all talking about?

JUON THE GRUDGE is the best scary movie I`ve seen in many years. No prisoners are taken in both that and its sequel. I found them both quite disturbing. I`m looking for ward to the US version, which Ive read may not be actually a straight re-make, but actually another chapter in the story of that house.

Trivia: Chiaki Kuriyama (Go-Go Yubari) is in Juon: The Curse.

RE: Threads (1980`s BBC Docu-Film)

The director of THREADS went on to direct THE BODYGUARD.

After that the concept of apocalypse wasnt so depressing.

RE: Where are the best coffeeshops in Amsterdam ?

I would personally recommend the GREENHOUSE EFFECT, at Warmoesstraat 55. Its divided into a coffeshop and a bar. The grass in there is very good quality and value. The coffe shop itself is very long and narrow, not to everyones liking, but you can buy your gear in there then go next door to the bar, which is a cool a friendly place to hang out. Its just the right size and the sounds are the business. Litterally right across from that is HILL STREET BLUES (because its next door to a police station! Imagine!) That is a bit more extensive and looks a bit rough but is actually a bit more touristy, worth stopping in though.

The greenhouse is actually a mini hotel too. Heres a link to their page:

http://www.channels.nl/10426b.html

And no I dont work for them! I live in Dublin but have a lot of close mates in Amsterdam I visit every few months so have gotten to know the place quite well.

Bon voyage!

PS: Stay away from the chain of Grasshopper coffeshops. They are complete tourist traps.

RE: HERO Director`s Cut 118 mins. released next week!

I would recommend DDDHOUSE.com. They dont have it listed yet so I`m not sure if they`ll stock all versions. I cant find it available for order on any of the Asian sites yet, must`ve been just announced today.

HERO Director`s Cut 118 mins. released next week!

HERO, extended edition, will finally be released in Region 3 in a weeks time:

Premium Edition wooden box set, Hero extended version (118 minutes) with Simplified Chinese and English subtitles, bonus materials (62 minutes), plus a picture book.

Basic Edition, Hero extended version (118 minutes) with Simplified Chinese and English subtitles, bonus materials (32 minutes), plus a picture book.

Basic Edition (DVD-5), Hero extended version (118 minutes) with Simplified Chinese and English subtitles.

Check out Monkeypeaches.com for some pictures.

Has anyone seen Michael Moore`s "Pets or Meat: Return to Flint" the sequel to ROGER & ME?

It runs about 40mins. I saw it at the Dublin film festival some years ago but dont know if it was ever broadcast or released in any other form. I would love to track down a copy.

RE: Evil Dead 3 - Hong Kong

Buy it from DDDHOUSE in Hong Kong, should get a better deal as your paying in HK dollars not Yen.

RE: Woody Allen movies ... which one`s would you recommend

Most of his films are simply brilliant. If you insist on buying ONLY five, pick up these:

Bananas
Annie Hall
Manhattan
Broadway Danny Rose
Hannah and Her Sisters

Two hassles I`m having with my PC, could do with some help!

Ive been getting many RUNTIME ERRORS from my browser recently which is preventing pages from opening on a lot of sites, from what I can tell it seems to be in relation to JAVA SCRIPT. This all seemed to start when I installed ZONE ALARM PRO. But even when I switch it off completely, these errors are appearing and I still cant get certain pages to load. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

PLUS

On an unrelated matter, but still browser themed: when I hook up my laptop to my PC via an Ethernet port, my laptop browser fails to find the net connection through my PC when I open it, despite the connection reading as there and working at the bottom of the screen. I followed the XP guides on setting up a home network, but still I`m having this browser failure. On the laptop Ive gone into the INTERNET OPTIONS then CONNECTIONs and ticked the NEVER DIAL A CONNECTION box, but still no luck.
