Ong Bak - any good?

Ben Franklin (Reviewer) posted this on Tuesday, 7th December 2004, 12:06

Watched the trailer for it on Quicktime.com yesterday, and thought it looked ace. I know it was released last year in Asia, and as far as I know its available on DVD. Is it any good? Or are the best bits all in the trailer?

If you just want good bone-crunching fights you can`t go wrong. However, unless things have changed in the last 2 months, it is not available officially on dvd with English subs. A chum bought one via ebay with subs, and he says they`re the worst subs he`s encountered. I took a chance on one via ebay (okay, I knew it was hookey when I bought it) and the subs were actually slightly above average. Having said that another chum has the official non-subbed dvd release and he says you don`t really need them. Having seen it I`d agree - it`s a fight film, and on that front it satisfies. The plot is easily followable (young man in search of sacred Buddha head nicked from his village mashes the chops of anyone who gets in his way) and the acting is actually better than anything in Enter the Dragon.

Fight-wise it`s superb. I`ve watched it a few times and a lot of those blows definitely connect. Tony Jaa, as I think he`s now known, has a bright future in fighty films. He`s obviously a real martial artist and much of the action is acrobatic Jackie Chan-style stuff. I think there`s a Luc Besson-edited version out now/soon stateside, so it`s only a matter of time before there`s a proper subbed cut.

There`s also a sidekick called Dirty Balls. Which is a good thing, I think. :)

Well I`ve got a 2 Disk DVD-Rip on the download (which I know is a 100% verified) so I assumed it was available on DVD. Also picked up some pretty good subs off Kloofy.net.

Looking forward to watching it, cheers Arf! :D

I ordered this DVD with the last batch of movies i ordered from YesAsia.....

I never realised it had no English subs until i recieved it.....(need to pay more attention)

But i am glad i did, the fight scenes are excellent, and a good change from the usual Kung Fu stuff, it`s one of the best fighting films out there!

I have made a 2 Xvid rip of the movie but the subs on Kloofys site dont work with it, the timing is out.

Ben_Franklin ....can you give me the size and any details of the rip you have so i can copy it,....maybe the subs will work then.

If not, i will need to mess about with Subtitle Workshop to see if i can sort it out.

Saying that, the movie is still watchable without the subs, there is so many fights that the story takes a back seat.
