It was an okay horror film, plenty of jumps, some of them lifted off other horror movies such as Sixth Sense, Ring, Carrie, and various other horror movies, to the point we're watching a greatest hits compilations of all the classic horror scenes.
The two leads was very good, Ryan Reynolds looked liked a spitting image of Jason Lee, in fact I thought it was until I`ve just checked on IMDB.
It`s on a par with the original, even though the original is dated pretty badly, so this remake is a slight improvement, the film only touches parts of the book, but still has to steal from other horror movies, to try and make the fictitious story scary.
There`s a new twist to the original plot, as to why the house is possessed, it still has to with Indians, but there is a whole new fabricated story on top of the house on top of an Indian burial ground, which upon finding out on the net is also a bunch of lies.
The only truth in the film was that there was a family killed by the son, everything else was made up by the Lutz family, and the author Jayne Anson.
On a whole it was an okay movie, but there are even better haunted house movies out there.

RE: The Amityville Horror - review
I have to admit that I saw this last night, and was impressed. It was better than I thought it was going to be (was expecting awful as I am a fan of the original)
Only things I didnt like were:
SPOILER:
The constant modern use of showing a dead kid walking around to obtain jumps
and
SPOILER:
The demon faces that started appearing in films like Blair Witch 2
The above made certain parts of the film very cliched.
Also, didnt need to
SPOILER:
play around with the whole indian burial ground story, was a step too far.
One of the better remakes though.
and it was all made up. The real story behind the house was

The lutz`s overextended themselves on the mortgage and couldnt afford the repayments. They were approached by the DeFeos lawyer and between them concocted the story to get the killer a retrial on insanity grounds, and the Lutz`s out of their mortgage.

Was pleasantly surprised by this, looked crap but turned out ok. A bit silly and it didn`t have any effective jumps, but it created some sort of an atmosphere.

Hear, hear! I saw this film on the day of its release and I have to say I was really quite disappointed.
