RE: Digital camera advice wanted - what to buy

Have a look at Steves Digicams (USA), or dpreview (UK) the two bibles of Digital Camera reviews before you buy.

www.steves-digicams.com
www.dpreview.com

I can`t (no one can) recommend what is right for you without knowing a hell of a lot more about what you want to do with it, whether you have cards & card readers already, etc etc,

What I can say is that ALL digicams burn batteries at a rate of knots, so invest in some good rechargables (NI-MH if the camera takes AA`s), and as many memory cards as you can afford - trust me you can never have too much!

RE: Who sang?

Are you having an "Isrealite" moment 42%er?

Think you are remembering Barbra Streisand signing "You dont bring me flowers"

You don`t bring me flowers
You don`t sing me love songs
You hardly talk to me anymore
When you come through the door
At the end of the day

RE: Lack of patience

Spent several hours and got sore fingers typing a program in on my ZX-81. Was so pleased to have completed it and so anxious to try it that I decided to run the program before saving it to tape.

I needent tell you that the first thing that happened on typing "RUN" was that the bloody machine rebooted.

A good lesson, I spose!

RE: Printer

Lexmark "justify" the cost of their cartridges by carefully calculating that there are enough plebs out there who are seduced by the low price of the printer and dont check the cost of replacement ink!

It`s just like mobiles, consoles, and loads more things, get you trapped in by subsidising the hardware, and make your profits later.

Lexmark cartridges also include the print head mind, but they are still effing expensive.

Just picked up a Canon i450 from ebuyer for less than £50 myself, replacement cartridges, £2.50 each. Lovely!

RE: Valentine poem help

Here`s a start....

I sit writing this, covered in mint
Hoping and wondering, will you be my bint?

RE: disconnect icon

Am at work at moment, so cant see the tesconet options dialogue - so forgive me if this is a bit sketchy.

Theres a label on the top left of the dialogue, that doesnt look like a menu option - right mouse click this and select "unlock" and you get access to all the settings.

RE: Free DVD in Saturdays `The Mirror`

FREE DVD INSIDE - STARTING TOMORROW IN YOUR DAILY MIRROR Jan 9 2004

INSIDE every copy of tomorrow`s Daily Mirror we`re giving away the complete Oscar winning film Cabaret, starring Liza Minnelli.

And that`s just for starters. In the coming weeks you`ll be able to build a full collection as we give away four more top blockbuster movies - Muriel`s Wedding, Face/Off, Enemy Of The State and Good Will Hunting - ALL ABSOLUTELY FREE.

This is the greatest movie giveaway ever and exclusively for Daily and Sunday Mirror readers.

Here Alun Palmer tells you why you must not miss out on the first of our blockbuster free DVDs - the fabulous Cabaret.

IT is, quite simply, one of the best musicals of all time. Before Cabaret hit the cinema screens in 1972 everyone thought the musical was dead in the water.

Yet the explosive combination of Liza Minnelli, choreographer Bob Fosse and the wonderful music of Kander and Ebb changed all that.

The tale of decadence, hope and despair in Berlin as the Nazi regime rises to power made Minnelli a worldwide icon and allowed her to shake off the shadow of her mother Judy Garland.

She is Sally Bowles, a singer in Berlin`s Kit Club. Dressed in stockings and suspenders she sits astride a chair to sing Mein Herr and shimmers and shimmies to the passionate hymn to materialism, Money.

She dreams of making it big and uses the club, and the men in her life, as a springboard.

In walks uptight Brian (Michael York) an Englishman lost in Berlin, looking for lodgings.

Sally takes him in and tries to drag him to bed, saying: "The only thing you can do with virgins like that is pounce!" And pounce she does.

After ravaging the effeminate Brian she moves on to rich German aristocrat Maximilian. But outside of their complicated menages a trois, the Nazi party begins to rise out of the ashes of the Weimar Republic.

In a chilling moment an angelic Aryan boy sings Tomorrow Belongs To Me, joined by a gang of brownshirts. For a moment, the trio are forced out of their bubble to face the harsh realities.

"I`m going to be a great film star... that is, if booze and sex don`t get me first," says Sally.

Thirty one years later and the statement seems more than a little prophetic after Minnelli`s long battles with addiction and her four husbands.

But Cabaret stands testament to her towering talent. Every moment she is on screen is pure electricity. By turns she is weak and vulnerable then on stage she is powerful and controlling.

She rightly scooped one of the eight Oscars handed to the film. Joel Grey, too, got one for his delightfully leering MC at the club.

This is a musical for those who hate musicals because nobody breaks into unpredictable song for no particular reason.

Fosse, who also directed the movie, agreed: "I get angsty watching musicals in which people are singing as they walk down the street or hang out the laundry... in fact I think it looks silly."

This is a pure delight of a film - a treat that can be savoured again thanks to this free DVD.

Now digitally remastered, the picture is sharper and brighter than ever before. And the songs are in glorious Dolby Digital stereo.

So sit back and let a little decadence into your life.

Connecting my PC to my AV amp

I`ve just got myself a shiny new PC (thanks to Chris Gould!), with a 5.1 sound card.

I`ve got a pair of 2.1 speakers, which do most of the time, but there are occasions when I`d really like to blast things out, so....

Whilst retaining the option of continuing to use the 2.1 speakers most of the time (without unplugging)

Ideally I`d like to connect it to the 5.1 input on my AV amp, but the amp doesn`t have any spare inputs.

I currently use the amp to listen to my hi-fi, and this has spare phono inputs (for a DAT etc) that I could use, so could I (and if so how!) connect the PC to the phono inputs on the Hi-fi?

Suggestions to what to use and where to purchase from are gratefully recieved!

Flatbed scanner with Transparancy Adapter

Thanks to Santa, I`ve got a budget of around £150-200 and need to purchase a scanner. I need both flatbed and transparancy scanning capability. Any recommendations please?

So far I`m torn between:

Epson Perfection 3170photo

Canoscan 8000f

and

HP ScanJet 5530C

Any comments, preferences, advice - anyone got any of these?

Wouldn`t hesitate to recommend Chris for future trades.

Chris

Have just sent you a message via the site. Look forward to your response.

RE: Digital Cameras - Help, Pixels or Optical zoom.

To be honest, its not going to make a tremendous difference, but:

Pentax 555 has 5mp, a 5x optical and a 4xdigital zoom.
Pictures at 5x zoom will have a 5mp resolution
Pictures at 10x zoom will have a 2.5mp resolution
Pictures at 20x zoom will have a 1.25mp resolution

Minolta Z1 has 3mp and 10x optical zoom
Pictures at 5x zoom will have a 3mp resolution
Pictures at 10x zoom will have a 3mp resolution
Pictures at 20x zoom (i.e. cropped in an editing program rather than in camera) will have a 1.5mp resolution.

Now, what length zoom do you expect to take most of your pictures at? I guess if you are expecting to take most at 5x zoom or less then you should go with the Pentax, but if more than 5x, then the Minolta begins to look better.

RE: VHS to CD

There is an article on VCR to PC copying in the current issue of Computer Active.

RE: Can anyone recommend a good musical?

I disagree

Blood Brothers (get your tickets at the half price ticket box in Leicester Sq.) has always been a favourite of mine and even afteer (anorak) 10 or so trips, I still love it and it still shocks and surprises me.

Also saw "Chicago" earlier this year and thought that was fab as well (stage production is far better than the movie).

RE: Anyone bought a PC package from Time recently.

Ok then Chris (see above) -what do you suggest we should be paying for a similarly specified machine (and where from!)

RE: 3 free issues Photography Monthly or Total Digital Photography

Thanks for the heads up - I buy Total DP most months anyway:

If you want the subscription, it seems you dont have to register with jessops, just go to
the Subscribe Free page and enter your details!

RE: Not a DVD...but Dido`s "Life For Rent" audio CD - 6.99 at cdwow.com

Agree - bought this CD a couple of weeks ago, and copied it with Nero express without a hint of a problem.

RE: Recommend a new digital camera...

Its one of those things thats really difficult to recommend, as what you want to do with it and your budget will largely determine what is best for you.

Suggest you go look at the excelent www.steves-digicams.com for detailed reviews of just about every digicam ever released, and if you are looking to buy online, you could do worse than checking out www.internetcamerasdirect.co.uk

For what little it`s worth, I`ve got a (now no longer available) Fuji 4900 and I love it.

RE: Photography

And I`d ignore film for the moment.

True a Digi SLR is going to cost you a packet, but pick up the right digicam with an appropriate amount of manual control. (I bought a Fuji 4900z on ebay for £200 a few months ago - second hand) and not only can you experiment just as easily as you can with a Film SLR, but you also get to see the results of your experimentation instantly.

Surely this is one of the best "learning tools" and one reason that makes Digital such a good medium for those wanting to learn creative photography

RE: How much should I pay for a Tecra 8100?

... going for about £400 to £450 on ebay.

RE: English...very strange language !!!

"Blow job - who blows?"

The person on the recieving end of the job ahem "blows" (like a volcano blows!) when the ministrations of the mouth become too much to ignore.

RE: Jamie Olivers New Book!

Alas it`s not as it seems -

The Evening Standard Reports it so:

Jamie`s email book is not pukka
By Mark Caper, Metro
25 July 2003
Jamie Oliver`s publisher was last night considering legal action after fraudsters cobbled together a book of his recipes and spread them on the Internet.

Penguin Books, which has published two of the Naked Chef`s previous books, was trying to track down the source of the document, which has spread like wildfire via office workers` e-mails.

Entitled The Naked Chef 2 and showing a photo of Oliver, 28, chewing an apple, the 122-page book is an amalgamation of his past publications.

Among the 105 recipes are Oliver`s Twist and Jools` Bolognaise Sauce.

The `book` has had office workers scuttling to their printers keen to save the £14 cost of one of Oliver`s official hardbacks.

The e-mail claims the book was sent by a Penguin employee, who apparently tried to send it to a friend but instead spread it to computer users all over the world.

A Penguin insider denied it was a marketing gimmick, adding: `We think this is part of a malicious campaign against Jamie by someone who is jealous of his success and popularity.`Aspokesman for Oliver, who has sold 5million books, said: `We are not losing sleep over it.`

RE: Why are Daddy Long Legs Called Daddy Long Legs????

.... And is it true as I heard, that "Daddy Long Legs`s" venom is one of the most harmful substances known to man, but that we are safe as they lack the equipment to break human flesh when they try to bite us?

RE: Breadmaker £9.99 at Tescos

Got one from Tesco New Malden last night - only one more left there - loads of the Goodmans @ £14.99 though.
