disconnect icon

dakwah (Competent) posted this on Saturday, 10th January 2004, 18:04

an old problem has not gone away.

previous to old message.

when on the net i get the frequent message asking me if i want to disconnect, when i click on a new thread/site. i have checked the internet options as recommended by previous helpers on the forum, but it still occurs. the top task bar says that `internet explorer provided by WHSmithsnet, which i uninstalled am now running tesconet, anytime, tesco is also by default isp (as smiths has been deleted). What is the problem and it`s resolution. It`s annoying more than anything having to click on no every 5 minutes or so.

Here`s a possible solution:

Open up Internet Options (it`s in Control Panel, and also under the Tools menu in Internet Explorer).

Open the Connections tab, then highlight your current connection - it`ll probably be called "Tesconet" or similar.

Click "Settings", then click "Advanced". Look at the boxes next to "Disconnect if idle for xx minutes" and "Disconnect when connection may no longer be needed" - if there is a tick in either of these boxes, untick them.

Click OK, come out of Internet Options and shut down all open Explorer windows. Hopefully, the next time you go online, you won`t have any disconnection problems.

If the option keeps coming back even after you`ve unticked it, I`d run something like Spybot to see if there are any rogue programs - diallers perhaps? - fiddling with your Internet settings.

Am at work at moment, so cant see the tesconet options dialogue - so forgive me if this is a bit sketchy.

Theres a label on the top left of the dialogue, that doesnt look like a menu option - right mouse click this and select "unlock" and you get access to all the settings.
