Recommend a new digital camera...

r8sso (Elite) posted this on Monday, 6th October 2003, 15:42

I`ve just got back from travelling around europe and I`ve had my digital camera stolen 4 days before I was due to come home. Every photo I took over the last 5 weeks was on the 128Mb memory card! :(

Anyway, I`m hoping the insurance will pay out for it and if it does I`m going to be looking at replacing it (it was the Kodak DX3600) with a better model.

The most important thing for me in the camera will be battery life. The Kodak was crap when you used the view finder, the batteries would be dead in minutes! I`d also like the camera to have a few functions as all you could do with the Kodak was take photo`s and scroll through them in order.

Any recommendations would be welcome.

Thanks.

Best way to get decent battery life is make sure your camera takes standard AA size, and then get 2000mhA+ rated batteries.

I love my Olympus Camedia C4000Z, down to an amazing price now. Has plenty of manual control (way more than anything else in its class), a top knotch focus/metering system, is very fast in operation and has an ace lens + ccd.

Sorry to hear that, Ross - it`s not the camera so much as the loss of the pics, isn`t it!

Take a look at this site for masses of reviews, recommendations and advice. The pick lists are really helpful, as they`re split into different "typical usage" groups.

Its one of those things thats really difficult to recommend, as what you want to do with it and your budget will largely determine what is best for you.

Suggest you go look at the excelent www.steves-digicams.com for detailed reviews of just about every digicam ever released, and if you are looking to buy online, you could do worse than checking out www.internetcamerasdirect.co.uk

For what little it`s worth, I`ve got a (now no longer available) Fuji 4900 and I love it.

r8sso. How much do you want to spend? I have been on the lookout to buy another digital camera. I had the Fuji 4i. 2meg pix, brilliant camera but just a point & shoot so thats why I`m upgrading. I have been on just about every site over the last month or so & looked at lots of camera`s in shops. If you want a compact camera but with a decent zoom there are 3 Pentax to choose from, Optia 450, (4 Mg pix) Just over £300-00 in , Optia 550, (5Mg pix) about £360-00 & there is a newer faster Optio 555 due out anytime. The battery is supposed to be the longest lasting of all. All 3 cameras have 5 times Optical & 4 times digital zoom. All the prices are at Amazon. Add £100 - to £200 elsewhere. There is a test of them on this site.here

These Pentax really are small for a larger zoom. But if you want larger camera there are bigger zooms still like the `Cameda range` or the smaller pocket but great Canon cameras.

Thanks for all this.

Your right about the pictures being worth more than the camera Richard. It`s not too bad though as my friend nearly always took his camera out the same time as me so I still have a lot of good pics.

I put down the value of the camera as £320 on the insurance claim so I`ll probably end up spending £300 on my new camera.

I`ve found Olympus digital cameras to give the best results. Even an older 1.3mp camera like the 920 or 960 gives fantastic pictures and can be had quite cheap. Also, they use smart media, and you can pick up a 128 card for next to nothing (not quite) at 7dayshop.

You can see some examples taken with my older 920 here: http://www.nealanddonna.fotopic.net

The school where my wife works has just got a couple of didcams for the classrooms, and I`ve been quite impressed with them - they`re only 2Mb Fuji ones (602?), but the image quality is darn good. This compared with the Kodak 3600 we have at home.... I think Fujis in general have a pretty good reputation.
