West Ham`s bid for the Olympic statium get backing from the IOC

Pete-MK (Elite Donator) posted this on Wednesday, 9th February 2011, 23:15

I know this would be generally a sport topic, but the underlying story elevates this one somewhat.

West Ham and Spurs both put in a bid to take ownership of the Olympic stadium in London once the event was finished. The main difference was that Spurs wanted to rip up the track and re-model the whole stadium to cater solely for Football events. Personally, I found this f***ing disgusting.

I`m not a great footie fan, but even if I was this would leave a bitter taste in my mouth. Is it really any wonder we routinely underperform in the olympic arena when some attidutes are to eradicate professional athletics arenas and facilities the second the olympics are over?

Sod footie, let have some of the genuine athletes have some space to breathe.

I`m glad West Ham won, ripping it apart for Tottenham to rebuild a new stadium was a disgraceful idea.

Yeh but it would have been hilarious for us watching them turn into Stratford Dons

I used to be with it, but then they changed what `it` was.
Now, what I`m with isn`t it, and what`s `it` seems weird and scary

I don`t think it was any laughing matter. I used to be a Spurs fan, but i was horrified at their proposals and I`m bloody glad they never won the bid.

We need more athletic facilities, and it makes sense to have them incorporated into football stadiums. In fact, I think in future, all new stadiums put forward for planning should have running tracks around the football pitch.

Yeah, who needs atmosphere...
The idea of ripping up and removing the legacy of a new Olympic stadium was shameful and ridiculous - but not much more than forcing any football stadium to have its fans 50 yards plus from the pitch. :/

I`m not sure if there is going to be a right answer in this one in fairness.

I think Spurs have had a bit of scaremongering over their bid to an extent aswell.  It`s been widely reported that they will knock down the Olympic stadium and "rebuild" as a football stadium, but from what I`ve seen in past few days is it`s actually just taking out sections that have been built with the foreknowledge that these sections may need be removed.

Still not ideal, but it`s not quite what people are making out from Spurs bid.

The other side, is that Leyton Orient are going to have their fanbase killed with West Ham moving there and long term survival now looks pessimistic.

West Ham will be doubtful to sell out a 55,000 seater stadium.

All clubs who have previously played in stadiums with a running track around them throughout Europe have all eventually moved back to playing in normal stadiums.

What guarantees have West Ham made that long-term they won`t use the "it`s no longer a viable option to have a running track" excuse and then do the same as Spurs (without the commitment to redevelop a dedicated Athletics venue in Crystal Palace?

How many days a year will an Athletics track really be needed for 55,000 capacity.  It`s all well and good having a venue that big but if it`s always empty then it`s ludicrous and would take away from the atmosphere at Athletics events aswell.

I think a 35,000 stadium is probably about the right amount needed as a long term option.

I`m not saying Spurs option was right, but also I don`t think West Ham going there is going to do anything better than have the "principles" of doing the right thing. :s

My dad said a similar thing to SJ, he used to go to a lot of football matches, was a season ticket holder, and would go to away matches, he said the atmosphere did suffer at pitches with running tracks around the pitch.

I think he said he went to Wembly when it had a greyround track round the pitch!

Relieved Spurs fan here.
Completely behind Levy`s desire to have a properly designed football stadium with no poxy running track, and nice steep banking.
And the lack of knowledge from some on here is somewhat indicative of the general lack of knowledge surrounding the bid.
West Ham only said they`d keep the track because they believed they had to make that pledge.
Spurs were then cast as villains for wanting to rip it out.
But the original plans were always to demolish most of the stadium, including ripping out 55000 seats, the tubular roof, the flodlights etc.etc.
Leaving a 25000 wet and windy athletics stadium.

As far as i can see this is just the IOC backing west ham, nothing has been agreed yet by ministers and boris, i think there are still a few turns left in this story and like most in this thread the idea of ripping up a brand new stadium is obscene

Why do people, like you, think this is the case?
Have you read anything about it, seriously?
The plan was always to rip the stadium apart, for f***`s sake!
Jesus.... :/
