Maybe the christian NRA should think of a way to stop people using automatic and semi automatic guns to kill their own........

Even if they outlawed legal guns in the States tomorrow, you can easily buy and hide illegal ones. In fact there are far more illegal guns than legal ones, held by criminals or law abiding citizens having them as well. So it is a problem that will never go away.

Other than self protection, a USA citizen can form part of a militia under the constitution to fight against foreign and domestic invasion. Domestic likely being a rouge own Government situation to create a Police state. Hence knowing that many USA citizens are packing legal and illegal weapons might be useful, to counter such a scenario. 

As for the UK, we could be taken over in a minute, as all we have is golf clubs and cricket bats

Thats a cop out and a very old chestnut, all of the illegal guns started out as legal guns, have to look at it long term, ban them now and in 5, 10, 20 years the lack of legal guns will make a dramatic impact on the illegal ones, they have to start somewhere.

Exactly, there isn't any momentum to start somewhere, that's the problem. :/

Not surprising, a country that would vote in Donald Trump is already not exactly thinking progressively.

Unfortunately, it not just the guns that need banned, but also requires changing the mentality of many millions of gun totting Americans. And that will never change, no matter how many mass shootings, due to my reasons mentioned above.

I'll point out one instance in this country as an example of why a ban wouldn't work.

Back in the 60s when 3 policemen were shot with a semi auto pistol and revolver (Google Harry Roberts) the reaction of the 'do something' culture in politics was to require shotguns to be licenced. Go figure.
The result of this was that somewhere in the region of one million shotguns 'disappeared' and criminalised who knows how many people as a result. They are still turning up in the wrong hands.
Magnify that by the situation in the states and you criminalise the majority of the population overnight because make no mistake and awful lot of liberals will still hang onto their own weapons as 'well I'm not a risk to anyone' prevails. 

You would need to either massively increase the size of the ATF or even create an entirely new department.
