RIP Ennio Morricone

I think I may have to give The Good, The Bad and the Ugly a rewatch...

RE: [VIDEO] Coronavirus, anyone starting to get worried?

Here is a question worth asking...

Back in April, when this thing was at its peak, we heard how it was running rampant in care homes, all this news about how the elderly were most vulnerable, and how care home staff couldn't get PPE or proper testing.

And then nothing. Certainly nothing from the government, but nothing either from the news outlets. It's as if it wasn't sensational enough to talk about pensioners dying from Covid, as they're close to the end anyway.

And yesterday, like a sly fart at a dinner party, the news eases out that 30,000 excess deaths took place in care homes over the last three months, compared to the same period last year.

Half of the lives reaped by Covid were taken from where the most vulnerable should have been shielded!

So the question, why isn't this a national scandal?

[VIDEO] The Color Maximite 2, finally a useful BASIC machine!

This is astounding. This homebrew machine runs a BASIC interpreter 100 times faster than 8-bit machines like the C64 and Speccy ran assembly.

I remember trying to write a database program in BASIC on my speccy way back, and had filled up the RAM with less than a hundred entries, and it was achingly slow.

This thing has emulated Gauntlet in BASIC and it runs faster than it did on my Spectrum

China's put military bases on all the empty islands in the South China sea. It's like they'd already thought of this idea.

RE: [VIDEO] Brexit

Take back control of our borders, limit immigration. Points based system, only those who will contribute, highly skilled workers... Get it down to the tens of thousands...

Today...

Except for 3 million Hong Kong residents...

Actions speak louder than words though. Cruise ships aren't doing a whole lot right now. Maybe a hire them to create a sea bridge to Hong Kong, just line them up at the port, and fill them up with those seeking asylum.

RE: If you thought the UK was a police state (still not sure why you'd think that)

I don’t think the UK government can criticise Israel for annexing the West Bank when the Israeli government can slap the UK in the face with the Chagos Islands.

We as individuals can express as much moral outrage as we see fit, but as long as our own governments are ethically and morally questionable, nothing can change.

I'm reluctant to mistake conspiracy for what is probably just abject, clownish incompetence. When we elect imbeciles to lead the world, we shouldn't be surprised at the body count increasing.

More good news, the hospital death rate is dropping.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-53192532

Down from 6% to 1.5%. May be seasonal, may be down to a better understanding of the disease and more focussed treatment.

And of course there is the thought that when it comes to  the customer side, the most vulnerable to this disease are those probably least likely to be hooked into the world via smartphone. They need the face to face, or failing that mask to mask to connect to the world.

RE: [VIDEO] Coping with the lockdown

You just need to pick the time of day and day of week. I queued for three weeks when this thing started, but ever since then, I've been straight in and out of shops, got what I needed, and the only problem was dodging those idiots who think 2 metres is the same as 2 feet.

RE: [VIDEO] Coping with the lockdown

It's just that comparing to other countries, who also don't have effective apps, they waited until new infections were in the low hundreds before opening up, and daily mortalities were in the two digits. The way the numbers are being reported, I would have expected Scotland and Wales to lift restrictions first, instead of the other way around.

They're not exactly lightning fast and decisive either. That chicken plant that had a sudden burst of infections the other day, I would have expected an immediate local lockdown, and an army of test track and tracers there within hours. But all we've got from the news about it is "Meh, it's a thing..."

RE: [VIDEO] Coping with the lockdown

It's about doing things in the right order, making sure the safety net is there first.

In other words, test track and trace has to be mighty effective and universal, and that app that was supposed to be beating the world at the start of June, that might be nice too.

Boris says we can go to 1 metre, and go back to pubs, hairdressers, cinemas, museums and libraries. and meet with more people in our homes from July 4th.

RE: [VIDEO] Asimov's Foundation

I love Foundation, indeed all of Asimov ‘s sci-fi, although while he’s a great creator of concepts, he couldn’t write believable characters. A TV interpretation could be fantastic.

I really loved the I Robot movie, which once you take out the Will Smith-isms is actually quintessential Asimov. Bicentennial Man, not so much, as the sugariness rotted my teeth.

But yeah, Apple TV... not happening!

RE: I thought car insurance was supposed to be cheaper this year?

Bright side of Covid 19?

Car insurance premiums are dropping.

Last year I switched from Admiral to Hastings, when their renewal quote killed my brand loyalty. Hastings Direct offered £310 on a 2015 Ford Fiesta in 2019.

Today I got Hastings renewal quote, which was a reasonable and Ted Rogers-ish £321. That's normally enough  to keep me loyal, but on a hunch I Confused the Meerkat, and called back to haggle.

Got it down to £222

I have never paid less for car insurance in my life.

RE: [VIDEO] Coronavirus, anyone starting to get worried?

A reason to be less worried...

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-53061281

Dexamethasone is a viable treatment for Covid 19 patients in intensive care, reducing the risk of death. They estimate that if they'd known about this drug at the start, there would have been 5000 fewer deaths in the UK.
