[VIDEO] RE:The All New Doctor Who Thread...

Some idiot marketeer thinks that putting the first two episodes on iPlayer on May 11th at Midnight will pull in viewers (just so we get them at the same time as the US does, because the US is so much more important when it comes to Doctor Who)

Amazing what they could get away with in the Mary Whitehouse era with Doctor who, but I guess they had to compromise sometimes. Recently saw an episode (it might have been Shada actually) where after offering a Jelly Baby, the Doctor reminds the recipient to brush their teeth afterwards.

And they say the current series is woke!

Dragon Ball creator Akira Toriyama RIP

It may only be a niche that watches anime, but there are some shows that hit big in the mainstream to make a lasting impression on generations. Dragon Ball, and its sequel Dragon Ball Z were such shows that were Saturday morning fare for millions as the eighties led into the nineties. You know a show is important when it gets referenced by Buffy the Vampire Slayer! There was a time when Funimation was practically financed alone off the sale of Dragon Ball videos and DVDs.

The creator of the manga, Akira Toriyama has died of a subdural hematoma at the age of 68.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-68444060

I don't know what it is about the manga industry, the work pressures, publishing deadlines, maybe an innate obsession to live up to fan expecations leading to workaholism, but so many manga creators die before their time, and it's a rare week that you don't hear of some publication going on hiatus as a mangaka deals with a chronic illness. 68 is no age these days!

RE: [VIDEO] The All New Doctor Who Thread...

Went lightning speed through the Pertwee years, and wasn't really my cup of tea. Didn't like the stranded on Earth storylines, and while the Master was good (especially in The Sea Devils), I wasn't as keen on the militaristic leanings with the whole UNIT arc. And Pertwee so wanted to be James Bond that the character's eccentricty was toned down. I didn't really get enthused until his final year when Sarah Jane came into the picture.

That carried over obviously into Tom Baker's era who was just brilliant from the beginning. This is the first Doctor that I knew although I was only aware of his latter seasons (Romana onwards). I never saw any of the episodes originally. I was living the cliche from behind the sofa where they were even scarier without the ropy special effects. But watching them again (for the first time?) I've fallen in love with the show all over again. In my mind, Doctor Who when Douglas Adams was the script editor was peak Doctor Who; as good as it got. Scary, eccentric, and absurd, I don't think the institution has been more British before or since. I also didn't know Shada had been completed with animation with the original cast reprising their roles vocally in 2017. Just started watching Tom Baker's final season, with John Nathan Turner taking over as producer, and you can see the gimmicky rot starting to sink in, although it's still great stuff.

RE: Putin completely innocent of poisoning another opponent

If the aim is to change a repressive regime, sometimes self-sacrifice is called for to inspire the people. Just meekly going into exile never works, and given Putin's propensity to have opponents assassinated regardless of where they are, makes no difference.

Nelson Mandela spent 27 years in prison, and wound up president of South Africa...

RE: My (very) old, newest pickup

Are you hearing no sound at all, or do you hear tape loading audio but no game music?

Try the BEEP command in Speccy basic

BEEP 2,8

If you hear that and the tape loading screeches, but no game music, then you have one of those Plus 2’s that has unbalanced audio between the AY chip output and the Speccy beeper audio. If you turn your telly audio to the max, you might hear the Speccy audio really quiet like.

That can be fixed by someone with a soldering iron and more knowledge than I.

RE: My (very) old, newest pickup

If you’re connecting to an old CRT, then look for a simple aerial cable. The TV side one will look like a normal aerial plug, the Speccy side one will have a pin coming out of the middle.

RGB is more complicated as there are two plus 2s, the +2 and the +2A. The latter will have +3 Basic listed in the Start Up Menu. They both use different wiring for their RGB connections.

More detail here.

RE: My (very) old, newest pickup

I think everyone had a Quickshot II

I used a RAM Turbo, which didn't add RAM, and didn't speed anything up, but it did have a reset button, which was useful on the old rubber keys. and it did have a cartridge slot, for the ten cartridges that were released, but more importantly, it gave you the gamut of joystick interface options, Kempston, Protek, Cursor, and Sinclair.

RE: My (very) old, newest pickup

That sort of thing, yes, although I don't see any joystick ports on it, which would be of use on games which aren't compatible with Plus 2's internal ports, and I also don't see a pass through connector for other interface devices, which could also help, if you want to do more than just gaming.

RE: My (very) old, newest pickup

I would use this

https://archive.org/details/zx_spectrum_tosec_set_september_2023

Basically everything Spectrum which isn't copyright blocked is packaged to download. When I downloaded the 2017 collection, it was just under 3GB. It looks a fair bit larger now, but you get multiple versions of various software.

If you want a curated experience to browse through, there is World of Spectrum,

https://worldofspectrum.org/

or Spectrum Computing

https://spectrumcomputing.co.uk/index.php

Plenty of 48k and 128k sized chunks of data to download and stick onto an SD card... or try in an emulator like Fuse if you're that way inclined.

That is my Speccy experience these days. I feel I daren't try my toastrack. It's been decades since I last put power to it, and the capacitors have probably melted, and the keyboard membrane will be goo at this point.

RE: My (very) old, newest pickup

SD card solution for Spectrum software storage. Plugs into the interface slot, and stick all your Tap and Z80 files onto an SD card, stick into the interface and get instaload. No more worrying about getting the volume right on the tape deck, or dodgy disk drive heads after 35 years.
