RE: Coping with the lockdown

One of the most dispiriting things I've seen... Have I Got News For You under lockdown. No studio audience obviously, host and guests teleconferencing in, and with Ian and Paul desperately trying to be funny, where there's only one item in the week's news to make jokes about. The only funny to be had was Ian and Paul taking the mick out of each other.

RE: [VIDEO] Living on Youtube

If you like rockets and space travel, there's
Scott Manley's channel
Curious Droid, who also talks about other people moving and military tech

And if you like maths, and who doesn't, there's
StandUpMaths from Matt Parker of the Festival of the Spoken Nerd

[VIDEO] RE:Living on Youtube

Lots of stuff catches my eye on Youtube.

I'm often clicking on John Schneider's channel (Bo Duke in Dukes of Hazzard and Papa Kent on Smallville). Whole lot of nostalgia, and he can be mad as a loon.

When it comes to vintage tech, I'm subscribed to Retro Recipes, The 8 Bit Guy, The Spectrum Show, and Technology Connections,  as well as Techmoan and Retro Man Cave, and will occasionally click on LGR or Ashens videos too.

My Mechanics is the most zen channel I know. This Swiss engineer takes junk and restores it to normal, and he films the process in his engineering workshop. Totally fascinating, and turns "I make a new one" into a catchphrase.

Another repair channel which I can zone out to is TronicsFix

And a Youtube channel which captures that early Top Gear feel is Car Throttle, a series of low budget and daft car challenges.

When I feel nostalgic for my student days, I watch an episode of Ox Tales But it's better if you can find the alternative Saban dub as that's funnier.

There's a wodge more that I click on but I'll leave this here, always good...

Although going to an off licence to do the same probably isn't given that off licenses are considered essential retailers in this time of doom!

Be extra careful when it comes to DIY. Now is absolutely not the time to slip and have an accident that sends you to A&E.

RE: [VIDEO] Coronavirus, anyone starting to get worried?

Old lady at the bottom of the road got taken to hospital a couple of hours ago. She lives alone so the police had to break down the door. I guess the ambulance staff wear PPE as a matter of course at any emergency they attend these days.

No way of knowing what the emergency was, but that sick, worried feeling in the bottom of my stomach isn't going away any time soon I can tell.

One thing is patently clear now, if it wasn’t before. News reporters are just as effective from their spare bedrooms as they are standing in front of some foreign landmarks.

I think they also have fewer dickheads per capita as well. So maybe better social distancing, less panic buying, less barbeques and less going to the beach.

Off licences added to list of essential traders. Concern was growing about booze running out on supermarket shelves...

I think that NHS staff were feeling out of sorts with the traditional Friday night stomach-pump crowd not there.

RE: [VIDEO] Some feel good shows

The Dukes of Hazzard is on Forces TV every weekend. That’s four hours of feelgood right there.

EDIT: Just realised that Mark Kermode's Secrets of Cinema has a new run on BBC4. I missed the Superheroes episode last Thursday, so iPlayer beckons. British History movies tomorrow at 9pm, and Spies next Thursday.

RIP Albert Uderzo

The other half of the team behind the Asterix books is gone.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-52016721

Rene Goscinny died in 1977, but Uderzo continued writing and illustrating the comics until relatively recently, when the reins were passed to Ferri and Conrad.

The golden age was when Goscinny and Uderzo were working together, but the Uderzo books are really good as well. Since then... not so much.

But another piece of my childhood slips away.

Got a spare computer lying around and a bit of Internet bandwidth, or a computer that's on most of the time but spends most of it idle?

Once you get past the Tim Taylor (90s sitcom reference) grunting over hardware, here's something useful to devote your computer to.

RE: [VIDEO] Coronavirus, anyone starting to get worried?

I would assume not, but it's potentially useful as a stopgap measure. It would mean rapidly increasing testing to determine who has had the virus, it would also mean those people volunteering to give blood as never before. But if could mean at least conferring immunity to health professionals first and foremost, and then maybe helping the most vulnerable.

That's if it works at all, of course. The point being that if it does, it could be put into effect in a matter of months, if not weeks, as opposed to the 18 months estimated for a potential vaccine. It's all about that wretched curve.
