Time to ditch SKY?????

The Jackal (Elite) posted this on Thursday, 26th July 2012, 10:27

Im paying about £65 a month now for my TV viewing. I dont have movies or sport but have multi-room which i hardly use. I also have calls and broadband with Sky hence the price. Now im thinking there are other ways of getting TV and we now have infinity available in my area so streaming will no longer be an issue if i switch to that. I cant afford to have both so is it time i said good bye to sky and just got a stand alone HD recorder box.

What do you guys have and how does it work. I mainly watch stuff like Dexter, Game of Thrones, Grimm, Sinbad now and nothing much else.

Ideas and prices please guys.

We switched away from Virgin (same thing) in February because the cost of watching crap TV was rocketing. We only watched Dexter really so we`ve not missed much. If I want to catch up with that I`ll just pick up the DVD`s when they drop in price. We now have a Freeview HD recorder (Digital Stream PVR 300Gb) and it has been fantastic. I watch Game of Thrones courtesy of a mate (can`t believe they wanted more money again for a fake new channel!) and will probably buy the DVD`s later on, which is still much cheaper than comitting to contracted TV for long periods. But to be frank, my next step is getting rid of the bleeding thing altogether.

You`re lucky you can list a few programmes that you do watch. We could only think of the one, which made it an easy decision to get rid.

Don`t forget that if you have Sky switched off, you`ll still have the 100+ free channels to view on those boxes (although you won`t be able to use twin channel Sky+ recording on the hard drives and you`ll lose Anytime). That may be all you need, but as said already, a fairly cheap Freeview PVR, HD if you can afford it, should be the only extra thing needed in the house.

I have 2 sky boxes - a Sky+ box in the living room plus another in the kitchen, but that only has a Freesat card in it. There is no way I would pay extra for

a) multiroom
b) HD
c) movies
d) sport

So I happily pay the statutory £26 (I think) per month just for the entertainment and documentary channels etc.

It would be nice to have the F1 channel and some movies occasionally, but I`ll be b*****ed if I`m paying any more than I do already!

I ditched $ky about 3 years ago, as the bills seemed to be constantly increasing.
I got a freesat box (humax pvr), which uses the same dish and cabling as sky, and have been saving myself £50pm since (humax pvr cost me £200....paid for itself in 4 month)
Miss the footy, but £50pm was extortionate.
Roll on Sky`s Now TV....then i will just pay for the things i actually want, rather than a package full of rubbish.

That`s a Freeview box, as in needs an aerial...

If you meant this, to plug into your dish, then...

Get it after the Olympics, as right now it`s technically buggered in that it can`t record the BBC`s 24 HD Olympic channels.

there a quite a few media PCs listed on eBay that have a freesat tv card fitted, i.e.-
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Twin-Satellite-Windows-7-Home-Theatre-PC-/290746587966?pt=UK_Computing_DesktopPCs&hash=item43b1d8db3e
I know that`s more money, its just the first one when I searched. Seen a few sell for under £200 in the last few weeks.

I`m considering buying a PC to sit under my TV to use for rips playback & Lovefilm streaming (there are also quite a few with blu-ray drives fitted for under £300) but I can`t work out what kind of processor it needs.
It doesn`t need to be super fast, but if i buy something for example with a dual core processor, is that going to be good enough?
I like the look of this one,
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/190706092922?_trksid=p5197.c0.m619
but would need to swap out the drive for a blu-ray rom drive. but is it fast enough?

I`d rather have got an android media player, something like this-
http://www.futeko.com/products/MP00031.php
but Lovefilm doesn`t work on android anymore, not since Lovefilm switched to Microsoft Silverlight

Oh well, back to looking for media PCs on eBay......

A quick question as we`re switching to Virgin and giving them a go.

What happens (if anything) to my email address as it`s an @sky.com. Does it remain useable or do I have to migrate to the Virgin one? Couldn`t really get any sense out of the Virgin bod, presumably as they`re more interested in signing you up than sorting potential Sky problems.

I used to be with it, but then they changed what `it` was.
Now, what I`m with isn`t it, and what`s `it` seems weird and scary

when we left Virgin, to go to Sky, as soon as we cancelled they locked the account, and couldnt gain access, after that they wouldn`t even communicate!
