I'm thinking I should just keep an eye on hukd for a cheap ssd - this laptop was bought Apri 2016 - it's not used that much, i don't think i've ever reinstalled windows on it!

I think the hdd is about 500gb, so £60 should get me an ok one, doesn't need to be fastest available, then I can install windows 10 fresh, and copy thunderbird folders etc across, I have a cable here somewhere, and a few caddies which have old hdds in. just a bit of a pain copying accounts across for 4 ppl, but the time i've wasted could have done it :(

wierd, it's on 1909 now, not sure why it didn't go to latest but nevermind.

the battery has not worked for a while, so one of those clutching at straws thing i removed it completely rather than leaving it plugged in, thought it won't hurt, and as some ppl said the error is a hardware error worth trying

also run cccleaner which i probably did before, dunno

also did various commandbline things like

sfc /scannow

powershell
Repair-WindowsImage -Online -RestoreHealth

rundll32.exe pnpclean.dll,RunDLL_PnpClean /DRIVERS /MAXCLEAN
chkdsk c: /f /r

some of which i've done before, i have them in a text file for next time :)

so sadly i don't know if 1 thing fixed it, or a combo, if i were to put money on it i'd say cccleaner removed something that was messing things up

Some really nice person gave me a Win 7 Pro key, which helped me use all my RAM on my work machine. (Thank you nice person!)

This became a gift that kept on giving, because when I upgraded this machine to Win 10 Pro, the activation became account based. So the key was still free, so I used it again on my new games PC, and then again on my new Macbook Pro bootcamp Win 10 install...

...but it finally gave up for some reason on my old Macbook Pro when I tried to use it for that bootcamp. I guess I had a really good run!

Windows 7: A year after the end-of-support deadline, millions choose not to upgrade

Deja Vu - I'm pretty sure exactly the same stories were run with the "death" of XP, I liked this bit...

No death for my WIn7 or winXP, beats win10 hands down :D

I still have my win 7 machine as its so easy to reinstate the program if anything goes wrong, like viruses etc. I just do not like Win 10. Reminds me of win vista, argh! what a mess.

As for support, I never even put any windows updates on win7 or winXP, even when they were supporting, as it lead to to many faults and problems, programs going amiss or corrupted, etc.

Also I have recently bought a secondhand Win XP works computer (wiped hard drive) off Ebay for £60, to run my old works programs that neither win 7 or win 10 can run. This replaced my old winXP computer that died the blue screen of death (and was smoking a bit and so had to be tossed out the window into the garden in a hurry).

I keep all my work data and backup work programs on memory sticks now, used to be on floppy disks LOL.

Not Windows 7 question... but anyone know where i can download for free Microsoft Office - Word, PowerPoint, Excel...

I don't want to pay Microsoft £80 a year for the privilege of providing nothing!

I have two laptops with Windows 10... I downloaded OpenOffice on recommendation, but it appears their versions of Word, PowerPoint aren't quite compatible and distort everything?

I have Microsoft Office at work, and any thing I mail across gets reconfigured, PowerPoint is the worst, completely incompatible.

Seems Microsoft have us over a barrel...

Thanks

Microsoft offers free web-based online versions of Word, Excel and Powerpoint via OneDrive.

Might be worth a look.

I can log in through that through school/student portal, but its only online, and it saves to a central point as I can see others documents.

Surely must be a downloadable version, that you can use off-line?

Perhaps I am just old fashioned, a dinosaur?
