Page 1 of Cheap energy suppliers
General Forum
Decided not to add to the British Gas thread (so Snaps doesn't panic again!). Last year I switched to GB Energy, end of last year they went plop and The Co-op took over their customers with the same rates.
Just switched to Iesa:

Could be worth doing now, rumour has it the rates of all the big companies are about to go up again.
It's incredibly easy to switch, you just have to watch out for penalties from your current supplier if you do it inside of an agreed term.

hukd and money saving expert have/had groups you can join, where they get a group deal, I've done the MSE one last couple of times, and even paying to leave early from British Gas tariff I was on, to go to another British Gas tariff I still saved money! Everyone was shocked when British Gas gave the best deal!
I you can't do that MSE do a mail thing you can subscribe to where you enter your details of what you consume, who you're with etc and they'll email you when a better deal comes along.
The other good thing they do, is rate the CS etc, so they warn you if a price is great, but that provider has an unusually high number of complaints etc.
saves the "hassle" of going to uswitch every few months.
As you say it is surprisingly easy to switch, just enter your details to who you're going to and they sort out the dates etc.
the only thing to remember is to log into your online account for your old provider a few months after you've switched, just to check there's not any outstanding money left they owe you, obviously they should pay it to you automatically if you've been overpaying each month, but sometimes they need "reminding"

I agree it worth changing when the time is right, but I get angry at energy providers ripping of loyal pensioners, who never change provider.
We checked out my mother-in-law's bill and could not believe they were charging her a fiver administration extra for sending her a letter by post, so she could post a cheque back.
We sorted out an online account via another provider that we could watch for her. It was quite a bit cheaper.
using mse at the moment to chnage supplier, currently one seems to be cheaper than what I'm paying now, and my current supplier is going to charge me £8more pm!

I was with Iresa, I'm now with Octopus, didn't have to do anything other than click the odd thing in an email.
Will stay with them unless someone else jumps out as being worth switching to.

EON have just emailed me to say i could save £180 by switching to a new tariff in October when current fix is up... tempted to swap completely, but concerned we have EON smart meters, and the issues of them not working with a new supplier?
Smart meters are a waste of time and a distraction. Sure, they tell you how much energy you're using, how much it's costing you, and you canb go on a jag of replacing light bulbs and appliances, and you get a sense of glee when the cost goes down a penny an hour thanks to your hard work and spending...
And then the energy company put the price up, and the smart meter looks worse than before. And seriously, there comes a point where the only way to save money on energy is to not use it. You can't live like that. Well you can, but there's no point in living in the dark, eating raw food and never bathing.
