Apparently an 18 month battle with Cancer. 
Which self knowledge makes his last work even more relevant. 

Whilst recognising his talent and influence I can't claim to have been a huge fan but certainly one of those, I'll remember where I was, deaths and 69 in todays world is nothing.

So saddened to hear this. The new album may make more sense now. As a life-long fan I feel genuinely numbed.

He gave a lot of people voices, those who were different and made it OK to not be the mainstream.
