Laser eye treatment

Snaps (Elite) posted this on Thursday, 2nd January 2014, 11:45

I know there was an earlier thread on this which I've trawled through but I'm curious if anyone has had it done recently and how much it might have moved on.
Probably couldn't afford it and I'm hesitant of appointments with anyone as I could do without constant phone calls and emails that will follow.

Just picked up a new pair of Goggles and the prospect of a pair for this and a pair for that or looking like a nodding donkey with bi-focals is seriously depressing.

I used to be with it, but then they changed what `it` was.
Now, what I`m with isn`t it, and what`s `it` seems weird and scary

Nearly four years since I had it done, and my vision is great. Now I'm HD ready! Best money I ever spent, and ditching the glasses, contact lenses is a godsend.

But don't expect miracles, and also prepare for a lengthy healing process to optimal vision. They say you'll be healed in two weeks, and you will be, able to wash your face and resume your normal routine after that point, but actually getting from that point to your best vision will take a few months longer, and you have to keep up with aftercare appointments.

You'll probably suffer from dryness in the eyes after that point, and you'll need to keep some artificial tears handy, although you'll eventually come off those as well.

I'm more aware of my vision now than ever before, and I want to take care of it, and I also notice transient effects more readily, blurring due to dryness and the like, which I wouldn't have paid attention to before the operation, so you might become a little hypochondriac about your vision as a result.

But the bottom line is that four years ago, once I took off my glasses, I couldn't see my hand in front of my face.

Today, I can read a number plate at 50 metres, 60 on a bright day.

Also be aware that you will need reading glasses when you get older, so eventually the frames will come back.

I'm one of the ppl that posted  in that old thread, and Is till have no regrets about having it done, was money well spent. last time I had an eye test, at a "normal" optician they said what an excellent job at they had done, which is nice to know :)

A guy at work had it done a week or so ago, newer version of same treatement I had , the laser is better, but healing time, after care etc is still the same, he's happy though, seeing him sit at his desk popping in the artificial tears brings back memories :)

He looked at the local places doing it, compared their tech, and prices, and then played them off against each other to get the best price from the most expensive place.

don't need reading glasses yet, but I was warned about that, as was work mate.

I was one of the ones who'd had it done in the original thread too and 5 years on and mine is still going grand.

Since then my brother, his wife have had it done and now my fiancée had it done last year.

She had it done with Optimax, as Ultralase had cancelled her original appointment about 3days before as they had basically been taken over by Optimax and there was a bit of uproar with redundancies etc.

As far as I am aware the dust has all settled and Ultralase, whilst owned by Optimax is still running as a separate company.

From the experience there was no real difference in the treatment  or recovery times (Ultralase had been a lot flashier in terms of offices and waiting rooms etc as a premium treatment, but I assume that's why they got into financial difficulty).

A NEGATIVE VIEW.....

Unfortunately I have seen bad workmanship of lazer eye surgery on the NHS for my Father in law.

They must have used a student to practice on his eyes, as he was almost blinded for two years before he regained some of his sight. His sight was never the same again, till his death five years later.

This bad experience has put me and my wife really off lazer eye surgery period, no matter how much you would pay for private work done on the eyes. They are so easily damaged.

I am lucky and did not need glasses to read till I was 57. Do not even need them now if I am outside to read, and do not need them normally. But I will just stick with my reading glasses for life. Lazer surgery, no way.

"lazer eye surgery on the NHS"

The NHS doesn't offer laser vision correction of any kind, as it's an elective procedure. However they do offer laser surgery of other kinds, my mum underwent a procedure to clean a lens which had been replaced earlier in cataract surgery, and lasers were used for that, as well as an attempt to repair a detached retina a few years previously.

Agreed however that eye surgery is one thing you really need to think through. My mum had her other eye done for a cataract last year, and while the first time was problem free, as was the detached retina, the cataract surgery last year triggered sarcoidosis, and ongoing complications that she's still dealing with.

Nothing would persuade me to have laser eye treatment, even if I wasn't under hospital/ optometrist observation against possible glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy.  Fortunately, it's been so far so good.

I wear bifocals and swap 'em out when I'm on the computer to a pair of single-vision half-way-between-the-twos.

I had mine done over 10 years ago and still think it is the best thing I have ever spent money on. From proper milk bottles to nothing in the space of an hour is a very strange feeling (I'd been wearing glasses since I was about 3).
I think the only thing that would concern me now is the number of places offering it (almost seems a walk in process) - I had mine done in Harley Street (surgeon was one of the people that developed it), but back then there were not too many options.
I also had my mothers eyes done at the same place and she's had pretty much the same reaction as me.

Admittedly, 10 + years on, I do need very mild glasses for working on a screen, but I think that is down to aging

Make sure you are completely comfortable with wherever you are looking at, meet the surgeon and discuss it all through in detail...

The risk from the procedure that I had, was that my prescription may have gone a little bit stronger.

Not sure on the risks for others, or other kind of treatments etc.
