RE: Laser eye treatment

I had mine done over 10 years ago and still think it is the best thing I have ever spent money on. From proper milk bottles to nothing in the space of an hour is a very strange feeling (I'd been wearing glasses since I was about 3).
I think the only thing that would concern me now is the number of places offering it (almost seems a walk in process) - I had mine done in Harley Street (surgeon was one of the people that developed it), but back then there were not too many options.
I also had my mothers eyes done at the same place and she's had pretty much the same reaction as me.

Admittedly, 10 + years on, I do need very mild glasses for working on a screen, but I think that is down to aging

Make sure you are completely comfortable with wherever you are looking at, meet the surgeon and discuss it all through in detail...

RE: HTC Hero - anyone got one?

I bought one for the other half when they were first released (it was the Hero or an iPhone) and she loves it. At the time she was veering towards the iPhone, but changed her mind after about 2 weeks of use (and finding the Google app store).

Only problem we found was that it was initially slow / unresponsive, but that was resolved with an HTC firmware. I am guesing a new one would already have the latest.

I`ve had a stack of HTC`s (Diamond 2 at the moment) and have never had any real issues with them.

RE: Looking for a Cheap media box for streaming avi`s to tv...

I`ve been running a couple of Popcorn hours for a while now and have found them pretty relaible and play pretty much everything I want (I`ve ripped all DVD to VOB, and have Blu Ray as M2TS). I`m running them from a NAS but they`ll talk to Windows and Linux quite happily.
Only downside is that the default interface is not the best (it`s functional), but there are a load of pretty easy tweaks for it.

RE: Urgent PC help, I know, should be other forum!

I`d check for bulging caps on the motherboard - I`ve had a couple of Optiplex 260 and 270 fail this way >:( (they run for a bit then just power off - symptoms all like like it is overheating). If it is that, the shutdown period will get sooner and sooner (and the only fix is either replace teh caps, or replace the motherboard)...

RE: Any decent 1080p panels around for under a grand?

Doc,

Have you had any indicative prices come through for the Pioneer LX508. Think it is about time my aging 502 was replaced (it may fit in the bedroom :o ) and that is probably the only screen tempting me.

Cheers

RE: Universities in London - Good/ Bad?

Not sure if it is still the case, but all of the education stuff for Greenwich used to be run out of the Eltham campus (which is nowhere near as nice as Greenwich)...

RE: Laser eye treatment

I had it done about 5 years ago, and couldn`t be happier. It was scary as hell (the disclaimer form was long) but the results were amazing. That said, I am a tad dubious about the almost conveyor belt approach that is being taken on the high street (pay a bit more and see a true specialist).

RE: Looking for a new car - help me with options!

T¦M3CH4S3R,

I`d have to agree with marksparks on the 645 (or 50) - I bought mine earlier in the year (54 plate and nowhere near that price with most of the toys) and couldn`t enjoy it more. I found there wasn`t a great deal of choice in the price bracket you are looking for (especially as I was avoiding Porsches) and couldn`t justify selling my liver and a kidney to get a DB9.

Have fun looking though...

RE: Anyone here an accountant or know how capital gains tax works?

Matt,

From memory you can have £8500 of captital gains before tax hits home. You can also carry any losses from shares etc over from the previous year

Cheers

RE: So what mobile phone do you use?

Ummm,

Nokia 8800, SE P900, HP iPAQ and a Moto Razr - just waiting on the P990 to be released.

Think need to stop buying phones on the guise of testing them for the company... :/

RE: Nokia 8800

I`ve had one of these for a few months (it was shiny) :D

Generally I`ve had no problems with it, but the battery lifeis not brilliant (hence it comes with two) and it is very quiet (with no volume control).
Only other criticism is that the buttons are a bit small!

But it does look very good (and feels nice)!!

RE: Can I access BT email if I change ISP

I changed from BT a few years back, and can still access my BT account via Yahoo webmail. They seem to treat the email as a freebie so you should have no problems.

RE: Anyone Any Experience With This Motherboard?

Funnily enough a friend came round with one last night asking me to help him fit it. Turned out his one is completely dead, no life in the board at all, not even powering the CPU fan, so not a brillinat start :(
That said, the board looked OK - documentation was OK, and everything needed was supplied (I`d forgotten how much I hate building PC`s)!

Hope yours works out a bit better than this one.

RE: Text files, notepad.exe acessing the net and services.exe

Alan,

Have a look at the following from Symantec - it sounds fairly similar. There`s a downloadable tool on the page to try and clean it.
