Tonight Program -Saving fuel

bandicoot (Elite) posted this on Friday, 14th March 2008, 20:43

Just watched the Tonight program in there answer to saving petrol and deisel fuel costs.

Thers answers were...
Keep your foot off the pedal.
Get a desiel car instead of petrol.
Fit a fuel saving magnet round the fuel pipe.
get a new car instead of an inefficient old one.
Drive slower on motorways and be overtaken by HGV`s
Do not use your car so much

Inflation will go through the roof with these fuel hikes. as everything is transported by lorry and car.

They did mention people are getting a bit angry and will now travel further to find a petrol station that gives them fuel a penny cheaper. So much so infact that the AA and RAC have had double the amount of cars this year, stuck at the side of the road without fuel.

But what they did not want to talk about too much, was the fact that fuel is artiffically held high in the country by the massive taxation pulled in by the chancellor

And no one seems to be bothered about it, to much.

Stiff upper lip England, thers more rises to come, just grin and bear it.

A good few years back there was an article in a motoring magazine about road funding. The statisitics should have brought shame on the then Conservative, and following governments but as per usual they scoffed at the report and did f*** all to improve the matter.

Japan- For every £1 or Yen equivelant raised in fuel/ motoring taxation £1.20 was spent on the roads.
I cannot remember all the other countries, USA/Australia etc but they all spent significantly more on the roads than the U.K. government.

We, U.K. government spent about £0.30 for every £1 taken in taxation related to motoring.

As I said this was many years ago, early nineties, but I would bet a pound to a pinch of scheitte the percentages/amount spent against revenue will be the same at the very best.

I`ve never been one for the "If you build more roads you will get more cars" argument. I reckon it`s rubbish. People are going to drive whatever the state of the roads, and whatever the cost so those figures of what the government spends in relation to what it earns from the motorist are truly tragic. In relation to this thread I`m saying that congestion adds to fuel inefficiency.

Some people say they work, some say they don`t. The way petrol prices are going, might be worth a try. Loads on ebay

I do this now, didn`t used to.
I would say driving out of your way for a penny saving is daft, but the actual savings are more than that.
For example, my local Esso (2 miles drive) is asking £1.15 for a litre of diesel.
The local Asda (8 miles drive) is asking £1.09 per litre.
Given that my average full-up is around 45 litres, it`s a saving £2.70 per fill-up.
A saving of over £100 a year.
Or, if you like, two `free` refills a year.
The rest of that programme was just common sense, combined with stupidity.
Drive more gently, yes.
Cruise at 65mph on the motorway though?
Never.

Makes me laugh how almost everyone blames the government`s tax on fuel for the high prices, yet never the lot at OPEC, you know those people who decide the cost per barrel, or Bush, you know that incompetent leader of the country whose dollar (that oil barrels are priced in) has sunk so low that the rich oil barons have to keep pushing up their prices just to maintain a stinkingly huge profit.

Anyone who exclusively blames the government is daft, but the fact remains they account for the majority of the forecourt cost.
They therefore have the power to counteract any increases that result from oil prices, but choose not to.

Haha can`t do that with my car when you lock it the fuel cover has a lock to, lots of newer cars have this stop stop people like you :p :p

So go for an old car to steal from, and make sure you choose the corrrect fuel to match your car, diesel in a petrol engine may not be the best thing.

Have you seen how ludicrously easy it is to break into them? ;)
My A3`s fuel locking fuel flap went wrong, so I had to lever it open one night.
Laughably easy, then the filler cap itself just twists off, no lock on that.
