RE: Help Required With Booting XP After Hard Drive Upgrade - UPDATE!

Finally sorted all my problems.......

Started everything again but this time used a program called "True Image", totally fantastic!! Very simple to use and the whole process was completed in ½ hour!

Thanks for all your help :)

RE: Help Required With Booting XP After Hard Drive Upgrade - UPDATE!

Right then......I decided to go with option 1).

So I backed up my entire C drive to my storage drive, then removed this and put in a new drive.
I loaded XP on it from scratch so there was nothing else on it.
I then restored from my backup.

Everything was booting as it should, but I had a different desktop etc, so I put in my okd drive and used the transfer settings wizard. Put my new drive back in and loaded saved settings.

Now all is ok the drive boots as it should without the floppy. :)

The only reason I can see that is different is the file structure....my old drive was FAT32 but the new one always seemed to go NTFS??

Now I have other unexplained problems:

1) I don`t get taskbar icon with the programs running in the background
2) I used to have around 40ish processes running in Task Manager now I only have 18?
3) My Firewall (AVG) & Anti-Virus (Kerio) don`t auto start
4) In add & remove programs there aren`t any there!!
5) PC seems to be running rather slow
6) I keep getting popup windows titled "Messenger Service" which says there are problems with my registry go to http://....... to do a scan of your PC (This seems very iffy)

I did a scan with Spybot which found a couple of errors with the registry so I got rid of these, I managed to reinstall my firewall so this is running now.

I`ve tried reinstalling AVG but I`ve had no luck it brings up error messages, I tried to uninstall it too but got a similar message, tried to install the latest version, but this tells me the previous version wasn`t uninstalled properly, so I`m a bit stuck.

Any ideas?.....apart from throw it out the window!!!

Cheers

RE: Help Required With Booting XP After Hard Drive Upgrade

First thing - Thanks for your help and interest in my situation!!

There`s more........

I`ve got my original drive (that boots fine) to fall back on if all else fails.

Right then, I managed to get rid of the system disk error, I used disk management and changed the drive (new cloned one) to the system drive....rebooted....now get a message saying "NTLDR Missing" (Would boot from floppy)

So I tried the original drive, boots fine.

The PC isn`t a Tiny et al special by the way.

Took your advice Rassilon and tried to clone the drive again......same message (NTDLR)

Tried a reinstall (over the top) with an XP disk....same message.

Spiny Norman.....I copied the BOOT.INI file from the floppy to the root of c: and this made no difference, also copied NTLDR & NTDETECT for good measure, but still no joy.

The thing about the hidden partition seems possible??

I can only see two further possibilities......
1) Backup the working original drive to my other (storage) drive, do a clean install on my new bigger root drive (the one that I have cloned but doesn`t boot) then restore the data from the backup file.

2) Take both drives (Booting & non Booting) to another completely separate PC, compare the root drive of each one (system, hidden & read only files) copy any files that don`t match across from the booting drive to the non booting drive.

Is there any way to give the BIOS a kick up the arse if it is looking for a `secret` partition.

Thanks again guys.

Would I be able to reinstall WinXP again over the top?

Do you think this would solve the problem??

RE: Help Required With Booting XP After Hard Drive Upgrade

Well I tried FIXMBR, no difference at all.

I did get a message saying something like "Your system has a non standard boot record"??? Don`t know why. I did upgrade from Win98, would that make a difference??

Cheers again

RE: Help Required With Booting XP After Hard Drive Upgrade

Thanks for the replies.

Old drive works fine, have exchanged new for old & set jumpers the same.

I`ve managed to disable network boot, so I just get the `Non system disk` error.

Gonna give the FIXMBR a go to see if it helps, will let you know :/

Help Required With Booting XP After Hard Drive Upgrade

Hi Guys,

I hope that some wise peeps out there may be able to help me??

I`ve just installed a bigger hard drive and copied files across using Norton Ghost.

When it comes to booting i get an error saying PXE-E61, then it goes on to say `Non system disk`

I`ve managed to get my PC to boot by copying the files NTLDR, NTDETECT & BOOT.INI to a floppy.

Somewhere along the line it looks as though my PC maybe trying to boot from a network connection, I`ve looked in the Setup to see if I can disable this feature but no luck!

Has anybody any ideas where I should dump these files or how to disable the network boot??

Thanks in advance

MIB

Forgot to say, these files are in the root of C: but I can`t see them on windows explorer, I`ve changed settings to show all files & folders but if I try to copy the files across they are already there!?

Worst BB Ever!!

It has got to be said that - Channel 4 in their infinate wisdom, to try and create conflict, sex & outrage in the house, have brought together a bunch of social misfits. This has resulted in one of the worst BB`s ever.

Pete is the only one who I think is a genuine character.

Do us a favour CH4, give the money to Pete and show something interesting instead, like paint drying!!

RE: Got nicked speeding - any way out?

Ask to see photographic evidence.
Ask to see the certificate of calibration of the Camera
Ask to see the Training certificate of the officer operating the camera (in mobile situations)

I know of people who have got off speeding fines by doing this.

Maybe worth a try?

LCD Tv - What is good spec?

Hi all knowing people of the forum

I`m looking at buying an LCD tv, it has a contrast ratio of 800:1 and brightness of 550 cd/m2.

Is this spec any good, cos it`s all foreign to me :-)

RE: Starting to see the appeal of People Carriers

When the kids are little it is easier to get them in and out of an MPV, no bending down, plus the need for pushchairs and the like.

Suppose when they get older you don`t need as much gear to cart around. Raised driving position is a great feature.

Eugene could have lost 150k as I see it, if he had said "no" he would have got loads of votes for being the good guy.

Unfortunately he didn`t know of the 200k prize. Given the choice he had I would have taken all of erm..lets say.... a nano-second to say "50 grand please" ta very much!

Eugene to win, MEkosi to be booted out!!

Does anybody know if an Ipod is compatible with USB 1, I know the spec says USB 2, but wondered if USB 1 would be ok but suffer from slower transfer speeds.

Thanks all
