Which DVD Writer? (LG GSA-4163B, NEC 3540, or Pioneer DVR-109

I`ve been thinking of getting a DVD writer for quite some time now, and now they are aound the £30 mark I`ve decided to get one, but want your advice.

I`m probably going to buy form SVP as I`ve always had great service from them for other goods. Now I know when they first came out, people were saying good things about the NEC range so I`m swayed towards that one, but SVP reccommend the Pioneer.

Any thoughts?

i`d go for the nec personaly, i`ve had 4 pioneer drives & none of them lasted beyond the warrenty period apart from my original A04 (remember 1x dvd writers :o ) which is still (slowly) going strong :) i`ve had an nec3500 installed for ages now, & touch wood it`s been flawless.

Been using the LG for 3 months now - cannot fault it and not one coaster yet. Seems to be speedy too.

I would go for the cheapest out of the lot as they seem to be much of a muchness, but if you need DVD-RAM compatibility then LG is by far the best choice

They`re all fine. And for less than £40, lets face it, it`s not the biggest investment you`re gonna make is it?
Is recording to DVD-RAM something you`re going to do?
The Pioneer reads RAM which I don`t think the NEC drives do.
I`ve got the NEC 3520 and the Pioneer 108. The Pioneer has been the better drive, both in writing speed and reading speed too. Write-quality wise, there`s nothing between them.

Thanks for your help peeps. Went for the Pioneer 109 in the end as I found that a local retailer had it for like £2 more than svp.

All installed and running dvd shrink winth nero express 6 - will see the benefits in about an hour!

On my mum`s PC (with the 109) I rip using the existing 16x DVD-ROM drive and the total processing time is 20 minutes.

I think RW drives are limited as to the speed they can rip (2x?), so ripping with my 108 on this PC (shuttle) takes 45 minutes to 1 hour.

So if you have a DVD-ROM you could use, use it. :)

Errrm, absolutely no way! Your DVD RW may be an old one that reads at 2x but that does not apply in general. Most modern DVD writers will read at same speed or faster as dedicated DVD ROMS - they are just DVD ROM drives with the ability to write. The clue is in reading the spec such as 16x8x2.4 for example. Now that to me isn`t 2 speed at all!

Nope, it`s a 16x drive. Not too fussed now there`s another DVDRW in the house.
