personalised numberplates to cover up age of car - help!

deano59 (Competent) posted this on Thursday, 11th August 2005, 17:41

I want to buy a T reg car and since the company onle stopped making the model in 2003 _ I`d love to cover up the reg with personalised number plates. Can anyone tell me any information on how to do this? Where is the best place to get them? How much do they cost? Can I purchase them before I get the car and then ask the garage to put them on or do I have to purchase the car first? I would really appreciate any help with this query.

Best Wishes

Dan

Theres a few places to buy from

newreg.co.uk and regtransfers.co.uk

use the above sites to find a plate you like and then beforw you buy check the dvla first, if the plate has never been on the market it will be cheaper direct from the dvla.

I think you can pay as little as £200.

Not sure what the dvla personal plate web site is but im sure you can find it. All plates come through them first.

You can but the plate before the car, you just cant make the car look newer than it is, so no X reg on a T reg and so forth, but the sites will answer all your questions anyway.

If all you want is a non age-related number plate then an Northern Irish plate would do (those with Z or I in the letter combination).
You can buy these on ebay. If your`re not really bothered about what the letter/number combination is and are patient you can get one for as little as £50. The transfer process with DVLC takes a few weeks and costs in the region of £80 if I remember rightly.

One thing to bear in mind is that most of the reg sites quote prices then it is £80 on top for the registration fee.

However the DVLA include the £80 charge, or at least they did when I got mine.

I managed to get GER on the end of my plate, all the sites said they could get it and quoted £2000+, in the end I got it from the DVLA website for £350 including the transfer fee.

All the best

Gerald.

Remember you need to be honest about the car`s age when you insure it and when you sell it. You will still need an mot too.

Transfer of a plate costs £80, retention of plate without car is £105.

Plate prices.....
Nothern Ireland Plates are the cheapest with Z and I in the plate, at around £50 to £150.
next..
a low prefix plate, ie, in your case before a T plate, say H15 ABC or B4 TED, the number is below 20, ie, 1 to 19 to distinguish it as a personal plate.
at around £250 up to £600, some are dearer if they are a low number.
next...
no pre-fix or post-fix numbers (ie, timeless)..
3 letter and then 3 numbers or 3 numbers and then 3 letters, at around £800 to £1200.
next...
The less numbers and letters the dearer it gets.
next...
Specials, like CRA 1G, etc, cost an arm and a leg.

There are companies that sell plates on the web, car mags, etc, but watch out for added VAT. Also Ebay is quite good.

Good luck.

why does it matter what age the car is? never understood the whole private plates thing myself, i mean you don`t buy a private serial number for the telly, so why for the car :/ Plus, instead of spending £300 on the plates etc for the car, spend it on the car and get a newer one!

Got mine for the bike via DVLA £180.00 which includes the transfer fee. If you look on their site it explains the process you have to go through.
However it does say that quote Quote:
"When choosing a registration, please remember you cannot make your vehicle appear newer than it actually is."
So if you have a `T` plate you won`t be able to stick on a 54 plate for instance.
