Can anyone recommend me a free Winzip-type compression program?

DazMack1979 (Elite) posted this on Saturday, 25th June 2005, 21:20

Got a stack of stuff on my hard disk that I need to squeeze down a bit to fit onto blank CDs. I used to have Winzip but see its only available as a 31-day trial version.

Is there a decent program available for free that anyone can suggest for downloading?

WinZip might say it is a 31 day trial, but still works for me a year later without any prods to buy.

If you`ve got Windows XP, you don`t need one-XP has it`s built in

Winzip actually say you`re only supposed to use it for 31days for evaluation but it doesn`t actually expire after that I`ve used it for years without any problems.

If you right-click a file and select `Send To`, you can then select compressed zip folder (or something like that). Personally I`d stick with WinZip. It doesn`t stop working after 31 days in spite of what you might think. Another good one to use is WinRar (which has a similar evaluation period, but also keeps working). Both WinZip and WinRar have shell integration, so you can compress stuff simply by selecting a group of files and right-clicking.
