RE: can i replace old pace telewest box for new shiney virgin media box??
Yes but only for the XL Package. Saying that, with free Setanta, free VOD, free Music Vids and "free" V+, XL looks a bargain that many people are going for.
RE: It Won`t Fit !!
I feel your pain.
For a long time I struggled with converting to DVD, and never ever found a easy or foolproof way to do it.
In the end I just bought a DivX player for £40 and saved myself hours and hours of grief, let alone the cost of all those wasted DVDs.
I have since given up on tradition DivX players as well, as mine allways needed the sound converted.
I currently have on order a Media Player.to replace it. No more DVD Burning AND it can deal with VBR sound, the end is in sight.
RE: SKY+ fan noise?
You will have broken/disabled the temp guage.
Maybe its broken, maybe the cable is dislodged, maybe it was part of the old hard drive, but the new one doesnt have temp monitoring.
RE: NTL Digibox and DVD Recorder Connection
Get some SCART cables. It makes more sense and you get a better picture.
The cable with the screw end is not a regular ariel cable, its NTL Digital, you should only ever plug that into your NTL Box.
Then SCART is preferable NTL>DVD>TV, but you can do it with normal ariel cable if you want.
RE: NTL digibox help
For your digibox to work like your old analogue, it needs to be equiped with an "Analogue Pass through". Some boxes have them built in (looks like yours does not), or you can ask your engineer to fit an external one during the installation FOC. Its a pity that few people know that they need to ask to get one.
You cannot buy the exteranal ones, and you will have great difficulty in getting NTL to give you one now (but you can try). Alternativly, when the box accidently breaks, get one when they replace it.
RE: Recording Sky channels
I suspect he means the PPV and Sky Movies.
Some of them are transmitted with Macrovision, so you would need one of those fancy cables to strip out the copy protection (for whatever perfectly legitimate reason you can think of :* ).
Yamada 6200 vs 6700
After hearing good things about the 6700, I ordered one but have been offered a 6200 instead.
I cant tell the differance. Google just gives me lots of German. Anyone know what the differance is, and is the 6200 any good ?
RE: NTL Digital Box query.
There are 2 issues here:
1) Not getting any signal at all to the VCR
Your STB should be sending on at least 1 channel somewhere. Either you need to re-tune your VCR, or your STB is broke. I suspect the former. Try a full auto retune, you should find either get 1 or about 8 channels depending on Pass-through (see below)
2) Watching 1-5 while your STB is on another channel. This is known as pass-through. NTL do still transmit 1-5 plus a few other like QVC that can be picked up independantly of your STB on UHF. HOWEVER, for this to work, your STB needs a pass-through device. Older STBs have one built in, newer ones do not (cheapskates), but if you had known about this and asked the installer, he would have probably given you a box to hang on the back to work as a pass-though for free (or a cup of coffee). Unfortunatly, if you phone NTL and ask for one of these, they will deny that they exist at all. They only take a couple of quid to make out of bits from Maplins, but sorry, I dont know the details, a hunt on some other forums should give you the info.
Or wait until the NTL PVR comes out next year with 3 tuners
RE: ok..and the answer is?
"As Far As I Know."
1) All machines will record and play
2) A few will change the channel of the STB for you. My JVC will not, I have heard that some/most Pannies will work, but you may need an extra RedEye gizmo depending on which NTL Box you have. I dont know about Sony.
3) NONE of them will read the NTL EPG and let you choose what to record easily like Sky+.
RE: ok..and the answer is?
IMHO just get a cheap DVD-RAM recorder and wait.
NTL will be releasing their own 3 tuner PVR next year, this should interface with the EPG properly. Very few of the avaliable PVR/DVD machines interface with NTL STBs at all without messing about, and AFAIK None of them read the EPG.
RE: JVC DRM10
Should be fine for bit, mine broke at 6 months and 11 3/4 months (boy was I lucky with that one!)
My 3rd one is definatly differant to the first 2, it pauses in completely differant parts, and is a lot quieter when using Timeslip. I guess they have redone the internals or at least started using differant suppliers, so fingers crossed you have one of these later models.
RE: why can`t i get an rf signal from my dvd recorder
I might be wrong, but I think my JVC has an RF Out, but it is only for passthru, no signal from the player itself.

Will I be able to back up edited files from the RAM discs from the recorder to DVD+/-R? Can anyone advise?
Yes you will, but its not nearly as simple as you might think. Never done it myself (allways wanted to so have kept an eys on postings on the subject), but if you are as big an idiot as me, its just not worth the hassle. If you think you might want to keep a show, use a RW disk. That IS very easy to backup via the PC.
RE: Idiot`s Guide to DVD-RAM, DVD-ROM, etc
Well I`ve had BOTH problems with the JVC. First time was "Loading...", second was the crackling on playback. Sure JVC fixed it FOC, but it meant that I was without a recorder for 4 of its first 12 month (JVC are CRAP at picking up, fixing and returning).
I would ask "Do I win ?" but a chap in my office had the "Loading..." problem 3 times in the first year.
Get a Panny
RE: can you recommend a RELIABLE dvd recorder
The manual should tell you how to do OTR. I had it set up on my first machine. I hav`nt been able to do it with my others by flicky thru the option.
RE: can you recommend a RELIABLE dvd recorder
Dont touch the JVC DRM10 with a barge pole. The 2 people I know who have one (me being one) have both had to return it TWICE within the first 12 months. Its a nice piece of kit but NOT reliable. When I reported the fault the guy on the phone said "oh no not another one". My local TV shop had 7 in, they all got returned.
RE: What do you think the best dvd recorder is for under £300?
I love my JVC DRM10, its very swish.
No RGB ? I dont care, with my current setup, I cant tell the differance between a recorded and live program even on XP mode (6 hrs per disk). I chose the JVC over the Panny because of the RW, but have never bothered buying a RW disk. That said, I am still a happy bunny. :)
RE: Whats the best deal for a JVC DRM 10 DVD RECORDER?
I paid a total of £213 for a JVC DRM10, delivery and some RAM disks from Cramptonandmore on eBay.
I love it to bits (except it wont change channels on my NTL STB, but then again, none of them will)
JVC-DRM10 and NTL STB (Pace 4001)
I have a sparky new JVC DRM10 DVD Recorder and it really the DBs.
I am trying to get it to control my NTL box which is the nice new(ish) Pace 4001 RCE
The codes in the JVC manual have no effect, and I have got no response whatsoever from JVC "Customer Support" >:(
Has anyone here successfully connected the two ?
