Idiot`s Guide to DVD-RAM, DVD-ROM, etc

I am that idiot, and I need guiding.

Thinking of buying a DVD-RAM recorder (probably either Panny DMR E55 or JVC DRM10) as VCR has packed up. On my Packard Bell PC I have a generic DVD-ROM reader and recently installed dual format double layer Freecom internal DVD writer, plus CloneDVD software (which allows me to back up most discs pretty easily) and run Windows XP. Will I be able to back up edited files from the RAM discs from the recorder to DVD+/-R? Can anyone advise?

Sorry, but can`t help with your request on the idiots guide (see, you`re not the only one :D ), but just for interest, a friend of mine has got one of those JVC DRM10s and its started losing the sound after a while during playback (it crackles very loudly). As it`s still under warranty he`s got to send it back to get fixed. Don`t know if this is a common thing with the JVC (I have always preferred Pannys anyway) but I thought that I`d mention it.

A lot of DVD ROMs will read RAM disks, but it`s not well documented for most drives.
Try getting DVDinfo Pro which will tell you if your drives support the RAM format.

Linebacker, Yeah, I`ve read a few negative things about the JVC, mainly to do with lack of RGB and compatability with 2x discs.

Spiny,

Thanks for that. It`s pretty much what I thought the case would be.

Cheers, both of you.

Have exerienced same problem with the JVC DRM10s (some 10 months after original purchase). The problem was fixed FOC under the warranty (evidently a 7p resistor had to be changed).
When I collected my recorder the guy behind the counter advised that he had that day recieved yet another JVC DRM10s for repair with apparently the same defect. - It appears this problem is a latent defect with this model

I have a JVC DRM10, which is a year old.
It went faulty and had to be sent back for repair in the warranty period. Fault- froze & displaying "LOADING".
This was fixed.
I have now bought another of the same model. This was from Ebuyer sold as "Graded stock".
I guess from the markings on the box that it was sent back to JVC for the fault "Loading" ( this was scribbled on the box) and JVC must have done the modification and sold job lot to Ebuyer. It cost me £ 81.80 with the cheapest carriage option.
The Scart cable, RF Cable & the satellite link cable are missing.
I don`t need the satellite link cable but the rest of the cables I had in my junk box, which I utilised.
Not bad for £81.80. (it also comes with 12 months warranty.

Well I`ve had BOTH problems with the JVC. First time was "Loading...", second was the crackling on playback. Sure JVC fixed it FOC, but it meant that I was without a recorder for 4 of its first 12 month (JVC are CRAP at picking up, fixing and returning).
I would ask "Do I win ?" but a chap in my office had the "Loading..." problem 3 times in the first year.

Yes you will, but its not nearly as simple as you might think. Never done it myself (allways wanted to so have kept an eys on postings on the subject), but if you are as big an idiot as me, its just not worth the hassle. If you think you might want to keep a show, use a RW disk. That IS very easy to backup via the PC.
