ASDA own-brand DVD-R disc problems

Hi everyone.

Having some probs with some "bargain" Asda DVD-R discs :

A friend got me some Asda own-brand DVD-R discs (8x speed) for Christmas.

However, I tried to burn data onto them, and they didn`t work - this was initially on my PC and then tried on my laptop. Tried 5 or 6 out of the 25 and then gave up, so I gave them back to her. Also tried backing up my "important" (ie expensive!) DVD films and that didn`t work.

Eventually my friend got me a replacement; she got hassled by ASDA staff as she didn`t have a receipt although she only wanted to replace faulty Asda own brand goods, not a refund.

Anyway, the replacements are all faulty - I have tried all 25 discs in the pack. She told me that the original 25-pack was 20pence for 25 discs, from the Sutton (Surrey) Asda. That was a great bargain - apart from the fact that none of the discs work!

I have successfully burned data onto both Maxell and Panasonic DVD-Rs (16x speed) without problem.

Has anyone else had problems with Asda own-brand discs?
As the discs were a bargain 20p, I have posted on the "Bargain Buckets" forum, but thought I`d get more info here on the H/W Forum.

Thanks,

Has anyone else had problems with Asda own-brand discs? I will post on the General or H/W forum, too, but as these discs were only 20p, I thought I`d post here.

RE: (New posting ) Inspiron 1300 1.5GHz Celeron DVDRW £288!

Good spot.

But this is through Dell Small Business. Is this route open to us mere mortals who do not have a business?

Thanks,

RE: BOGOF on Mountain Bikes

Hi MagicFreebiesUK.

I was wondering if you or anyone else out there has bought a bike from Sterling House? I`ve seen these offers before from them, and have been tempted, but as you can`t try out the bike, have always been wary.

Thanks,

RE: Free DVD in Staturday`s Daily Telegraph

Hi tb1.

I got an email (spam) from the Telegraph last night apologising profusely that there would be
no freebie DVD this Saturday due to "gross incompetence". Actually, it said something
else but I deleted the mail last night.

I get the feeling that most of these companies couldn`t organise a drink up in a brewery...hic!

RE: open a current account at lloyds and get 50quid.

Hi RM.

I couldn`t find anywhere in the T&Cs that you had to have that £1,000 flowing in (and out) of your new Classic Plus account for a minimum period of time of 6 months. As I read it, you get your £50 after a couple of months. After getting the money...run!

What`s to stop you closing the account after you get the £50? Have I missed something?

I`m sure someone can point teh relevant Lloyds-TSB`s clause out to me.

Cheap-ish booze @ Somerfield

I went to Somerfield in Hounslow (London) and noticed they had some promos on booze :

BOGOF on Kronenbourg 1664 - buy 4 for £5 get 4 free. BTW, it is brewed in the UK but doesn`t taste as good as the one made in France.

Banrock Station red wine 3 Litre box - was £15 now £13.

24 cans of Whitbread Best Bitter for £10.

I think these are all "Savercard" specials, but you can get a Savercard straight away in Somerfield shops (they are free).

RE: Samsung ML 1520 Laser Printer - back at £49.99 (Dixons/PCWorld)

Well, F_M is a silly old twit, really for recommending this machine to you for this reason :

After buying the ML1520, I then purchased a toner refill bottle from Consumable Cafe. However, now the that the toner is getting low
on the machine and print quality is deterioating, I attempted to refill the toner.....but can`t!!

On looking at the Consumable Cafe`s website, this message has appeared (not sure when) :
"WARNING this toner powder will NOT fit the new ML1520 which requires a polyester based toner which is not available in the UK!"

CC have a compatible toner - model ML1710D3 - for £50 (the price of the now out-of-stock printer!), that it says fits both the ML1510
and the ML1520 but I`m not sure if the ML1710D3 toner actually does fit both ML1510 and ML1520 - I`ve emailed CC to find out!

Anyone got any ideas on how to inexpensively keep the ML1520 running?

:-(

Samsung ML 1520 Laser Printer - back at £49.99 (Dixons/PCWorld)

In case anyone wants one, the Samsung ML 1520 mono Laser Printer is back on sale at Currys and PCWorld for £49.99.

I picked one up from Dixons when they had them in stock a few weeks ago - works well, especially for the price!

I haven`t provided the full URLs, due to a session timeout problem, but if you go through the www.pcworld.co.uk or www.currys.co.uk sites, they can be found there.

RE: Mine`s set up nicely now...

Hi Everyone.

As at 10.00 Wednesday 24 Nov, the PCWorld and Curry`s sites had it back in stock at £39.99. Not shown at all on the Dixons or Comet sites, though.

The shipping charges are weird, however - PCWorld is £2.49 and Curry`s is £7.99!

HOWEVER, 10 mins later and they were out of stock again! :-(

RE: NEC e313 PAYG "3" phone - now £30...

Hi Clayts.

Do you know (seeing as you have one already) if this phone can be used with other SIM`s? I have heard that the SIM card for these 3 phones are a different size from standard mobile SIMcards.

Have just ordered a Voda 200 mins x-net SIM (thanks to Spartacus for that heads up on this Forum), and was thinking of getting the NEC e313 you linked to, to use with it instead of my silly ol` Nokia.

Thanks,

F_M

RE: Vodaphone Anytime 200 - £25.99

Hi Spartacus.

Good spot! Chatterbox are doing the same deal at £4 pm = £48 for the year, but this is the best deal I have seen. I`ve been prevaricating on getting this, but at £26 I will not complain as long as i get my free 200 x-net mins pm!!

Just ordered it, and noted the final amount was £29.94, which includes £3.87 for shipping. You need a PAC number to port your existing number. I am already with Vodofone, so I don`t think I can keep my old number :-(

But why on earth is the weight (bottom left hand corner of the offer on FC`s website) of the SIM given as 1000 grammes?? That`s 1kg!!! Must be why it`s so cheap :-)

RE: metroland £1.97 musiczone

Hi cirdan.

Is this the Sir John Betjeman "Metroland"? I think I caught it on BBC4 on a few weeks ago (maybe it was BBC2).

Definately worth it for under £2. Was it the DVD (VHS)?

I think there`s a MUSICZONE in London`s Oxford Street - is that where you got yours? Will make a trip into central London for that!!

Thanks,

RE: The Rock`s new movie The Rundown or Welcome to the Jungle £10.46 at DVD Soon.

Hi phlogiston.

I saw WTTJ on a plane going to America recently. It was a pretty silly film, and I`m not sure I`d pay £10 or £11 for it (maybe £4!!).

Also, Christopher Walken does NOT dance in this film at all ! :-(

RE: Nokia 3310 and 120 mins anytime cross network for £19.99 no line rental for 12 months

Good spot Ravimann.

Not a bad offer at all, especially as it`s with 120 x-net minutes per month (old phone, though!). My only concern is how likely Talkworldonline to be around in 4 or 5 months time?

BTW, you would need to change your tariff downwards after the 4 month initial period, to something like the £15 Orange Your Plan 30 tariff. This is what they actually state on their website :

5 months line rental on Your Plan 120 charged at £25 per month = £125
7 months line rental on Your Plan 30 charged at £15 per month = £105
12 month total line rental refund = £230

RE: Ealing Comedy Boxsets - Choices Direct

Thanks for the heads up Alan.

I ordered mine yesterday (Tues 12) morning, and received an email later that day saying it had been dispatched in the afternoon!

Now just looking for "Lavender Hill Mob" on its own, as I`ve got "Kind Hearts" already. Any bargains?

RE: NOTHING TO DO WITH DVD.... BEST BARGIN THIS SIDE OF XMAS

Hi Everyone.

I had a look on the lycos site - today`s special is CAIRO, for £129. Pyramids, anyone!?

The terms of the offer are on http://uk.lycos.co.uk/application/ba/terms.html

It`s worth pointing out that the sale ends this Friday (29 November), you buy up to 5 tickets, but there`s only a couple of hundred tickets a day.

Bit of a nuisance, really, as each day, the sale starts at a different time. Today`s started at 11am - wonder if it`s sold out already (20 mins later)??

RE: Its not DVD,but booze(equally important!)

Hi budda.

I`ve had a quick look on the Asda website, and the only stuff for that price are packs of 12 cans. Grolsch was there, as was Caffreys.

Is the 24pack bargain (cans, I assume?) only in-store, methinks? Sainsbury`s are doing 24cans of cafferys for £16 (same for Webster`s).

RE: Cheap Printer

The G Man -

Thanks for the tip. I haven`t been `round to his place to check what the problem is, so I`ll be trying the setup panel option that you suggest.

You`re right - that P2100 looks like it was an absolute bargain for £25 with usb cable and 2 cartridges. No wonder you bought a couple!

Thanks for your help,

F_M

RE: Cheap Printer

My friend bought one of the Toys-R-Us Apollo/HP printers a week ago, and is having problems already!

The printer only came with a colour cartiridge, so I got him a b&w one (HP compatible). However, the printer is not letting him print colour pages as b&w, and therefore is wasting ink - you HAVE to use the colour cartridge. You also have to swap out the cartridge`s each time you want to print b&w or colour - this sounds crazy to me!!

Anyone else having problems with this machine? Maybe it`s a duff printer?

Thanks,

F_M

RE: Current problem with Play?

i have never had any serious problems with play, after using them for over 2 years for lots of dvds - never had to `phone them up, and the only problem i ever had was a defective disk that they quickly replaced.

i recently changed the c/c that i use on their site and ordered without any problems - it didn`t come up as "rejected" etc.

recently, however, it did take over a week for them to deliver a r2 in-stock disc, which was disappointing - in the old days, i would have got it in 2/3 days!!

i still recommend play.com to any friends who are just catching up and getting into dvd. i HAVE had problems with other retailers, and frankly, none of them matched the service offerred by play (for all this plugging, i reckon i should get some free dvds!).

RE: Harry Potter @ Deepdiscountdvd.com

RichardH -

I wonder if the R1 dvd will be like those old chinese martial arts films which had bad dubbing. so every time someone says "philosopher`s" it`s dubbed into "sorcerer`s".

And can anyone explain WHY the yank version is "sorcerer" instead of "philosopher"? is this like the 007 "licence revoked" situation??

RE: Harry Potter @ Deepdiscountdvd.com

colinb9 -

haven`t used deepdiscountdvd, but free shipping only applies to the US. international shipping is around 6 dollars. but u r right - looks like a good deal, altho play r doing it for 15 quid.

RE: Game Boy Advance £59.99

This will possibly make u laugh a bit - my mate went to Finland last month, and said that the Game Boy Advance in the duty/tax free shop in Helsinki airport was selling @ 150 Euros.

That`s about 100 quid "tax free"!! So he got me some chocolate instead.

And no, i don`t feel feel sorry for the fins!

F_M

RE: Game Boy Advance £59.99

Just checked amazon.co.uk - they have it for £64.99, so the original post was a good one!

The amazon US site has it listed for $69.99 (=£50), but they don`t ship electronix outside the US :-(

RE: Box Office failing to reply

In my expereince, DVDBO can be very hit and miss -

I have used them a few times (single figures), and sometimes they will send a disk out quickly (reaches you in a week), and sometimes it takes a few weeks. Sometimes the disk is a shaker, or is scratched (looks used!!), and sometimes perfect.

Only thing is to keep bugging them via email/phone.

They really should have improved their customer service by now - it`s been over a year since I ordered from them.

RE: which is the best place for hindi film dvd for region2 or 0

Slightly off topic, but if u go on holiday to the USA/know someone there, in Jersey City (in New Jersey), there are several Indian shops there, selling Hindi DVDs for around $US 10 each. They`re all region 0.

I went there and bought around 20 - this after 2 years of buying dvds exclusively via the internet - and i actually paid cash (strange feeling) for a discount!

Lots of recent-ish movies, and loads of oldies such as Dev Anand, Shami Kapoor, etc.

RE: Anyone recommend a good external CD-RW for a good price?

I had an internal Yamaha CDRW, and it was AWFUL - 3 coasters for every good disk burned. I would never buy a Yamaha CD product, and that`s my advice to you, based on personal experience and also what others said about yamaha products afterwards....

Try one from HP or CreativeLabs. I replaced my yamaha with an external HP USB CDRW (6-6-4) - slow, but not 1 coaster in a year`s burning.

I got my HP from buy.co.uk, and it was under £150.
