Page 1 of ASDA own-brand DVD-R disc problems

Hi everyone.

Having some probs with some "bargain" Asda DVD-R discs :

A friend got me some Asda own-brand DVD-R discs (8x speed) for Christmas.

However, I tried to burn data onto them, and they didn`t work - this was initially on my PC and then tried on my laptop. Tried 5 or 6 out of the 25 and then gave up, so I gave them back to her. Also tried backing up my "important" (ie expensive!) DVD films and that didn`t work.

Eventually my friend got me a replacement; she got hassled by ASDA staff as she didn`t have a receipt although she only wanted to replace faulty Asda own brand goods, not a refund.

Anyway, the replacements are all faulty - I have tried all 25 discs in the pack. She told me that the original 25-pack was 20pence for 25 discs, from the Sutton (Surrey) Asda. That was a great bargain - apart from the fact that none of the discs work!

I have successfully burned data onto both Maxell and Panasonic DVD-Rs (16x speed) without problem.

Has anyone else had problems with Asda own-brand discs?
As the discs were a bargain 20p, I have posted on the "Bargain Buckets" forum, but thought I`d get more info here on the H/W Forum.

This just proves you get what you pay for. :p

Do you have DVD Info on your PC? If not, Google it, and download the program - it is free. This program will give you the media code of those cheap and nasty discs. Post it here so we can all avoid them!

Generally, discs made by CMC Magnetics, Ritek, Taiyo Yuden, TDK, Fujifilm, Prodisc, Optodisc and a few others should work in most burners. Sometimes, a firmware upgrade will help. The DVD Info program will give you the precise model of your burner - you can google this with the word "firmware" to see if there is an upgrade available for you to flash the burner with.

But a spool of discs for 20p is going to be a spool of coasters, isn`t it!

Stick with reputable suppliers like SVP, who always display the media code in the description. Then buy discs that you know work reliably in your drive, to avoid disappointment!

Funnily enough

A couple of months ago I bought 100 Panasonic with the famous Taiyo Yuden dye 16x DVR-R from BigPockets which including P&P cost me £25. I bought these purley on customer reviews which were giving them 10 out of 10

To be frank I`ve been disappointed with them as I`ve been getting a lot of coasters when burning at full speed. The only way of avioding this was to reduce the burn speed by half which defeats the point of buying 16x DVD-R

I did e-mail BigPockets expressing my disappointment with them but they never responded
