RE: BOGOF on Mountain Bikes
Hi MagicFreebiesUK.
I was wondering if you or anyone else out there has bought a bike from Sterling House? I`ve seen these offers before from them, and have been tempted, but as you can`t try out the bike, have always been wary.
Thanks,
F_M
I bought one in April 2003 :)
Went for £40 mens model but they sent me £50 model at no extra :)
Had a job about a mile from home and did cycle for about a year.
The bike was ok. I did get a new saddle as it was like sitting on a razor blade :¦
The bolt which held the saddle did not tighten enough and I broke it but they sent another ok. The bearings in one of the pedals did fail and when I rang they said I would have to pay to send back for testing first! I could not wait so bought some new ones for about £8 from Halfords.
Even with the problems I do think the bike was good value.
Its sat in the garage now gathering dust as I have a new job further away :/
There are some other cheap bikes about though and have seen some for £50 in BIG W

like everything..you get what you pay for.
A £50 mountain bike may get you from A to B for a while but they are complete junk.
As soon as you try and use it off road bits will break and fall off....you are better off buying a decent bike that is maybe last years model from Halfords or out of the ad`s in an MTB magazine for the £2-300 pound mark.
You will get a bike that can handle what it was designed for and will last a good few years.
why take life so seriously..its not like you are going to make it out alive
I do like the `HELMEST - ONE SIZE FITS ALL` quote...
no they don`t, a cycle helmet should be fitted properly exactly the same way as a Motorcycle helmet should be...it`s to protect your head for christsakes!

Bought one for my eldest a year ago, no better or worse (but cheaper) than anything in Halfords\JJB Sports.
In fact considering the build quality compare to the youngest sons (JJB) bike probably better.
I quite like the Helpdesk people in a benevolent (as opposed to malevolent) way as they do some valuable work in preventing us being inundated by every halfwit who can work a phone.
RE: BOGOF on Mountain Bikes
I bought a mans and ladies bike a couple of months ago from them, they seem to be ok, again not tried off road but so far no bits fallen off yet, you pay for what you get I guess though, no frills with these models, but I`m just looking for a cheap ride ;) paid extra for theft insurance so will wait and see what happens this year....
No perfume
No artificial colours
Just Burnt
I bought a mountain bike from my local Aldi, the first week it opened, about 5 years ago.21 gears, quick release saddle & front wheel,& bar ends came with it.Other than that nothing else special, just a standard bike,no suspension etc.
I`ve since done over 5000 miles on it,& nothing at all has gone wrong with it.Just 2 punctures, one new set of tyres & new brake pads. The bike cost £69.99
Well pleased.

Thats because JJB bikes are junk as well.....same as the the ones you can buy in those motoring shops.
Halfords do sell the cheapo £79.99 bikes too...they are also junk....like I said, buy a £2-300 bike that is maybe last years model and you will have a bike that does what it is meant to do and will stay in one piece.
Not one made with plastic 3 piece cranks, pressed steel `V-brakes` and gear shifts that were on bikes 15-20 years ago.
Same old story...it looks like a mountain bike down the road thats £300 and it`s only £50.....it must be a bargain!

I saw in the paper that Halfords had some decent reductions on bikes at the moment - see here - also advertised a Helium Crosstrack for £109 from £279, which seems a pretty decent reduction if they`s still got any left...
