Cheap Printer

Stigman (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Friday, 7th June 2002, 00:53

A friend told me that Toys R Us are doing a cheap USB printer £25 quid, which comes with cartridges and a USB lead. I had a quick look on their site and it seems ok.

Just thought Id mention it.

Cheers for that.

My current printer gave up the ghost so I was in need of a cheap printer as I don`t need an all singing, all dancing model at the moment.

Been to my local Toysrus and picked one up for £24.99. Thing is, the one I got is slightly different from the one advertised on the site. The model I got is the P1200 which is 600 x 300 dpi black and 300 x 300dpi colour which is more than sufficient for what I need at present. It is also parrallel port and you don`t get a cable supplied.

So how much are replacement inks for it? Original and clones?

My friend bought one of the Toys-R-Us Apollo/HP printers a week ago, and is having problems already!

The printer only came with a colour cartiridge, so I got him a b&w one (HP compatible). However, the printer is not letting him print colour pages as b&w, and therefore is wasting ink - you HAVE to use the colour cartridge. You also have to swap out the cartridge`s each time you want to print b&w or colour - this sounds crazy to me!!

Anyone else having problems with this machine? Maybe it`s a duff printer?

Thanks,

F_M

Foolish_Mortal ,
I have the Apollo P2100 which Toys R Us were selling previously. If it has the same driver software as the 1200 , there is a setting on the setup panel where you specify which cartridge(s) you have installed (i.e. black , colour , both) - it could be that this is set incorrectly on your friends printer and is ignoring the black cartridge.
Pity they aren`t still selling the P2100 - that was a bargain @£24.99 - usb , cable supplied and with colour and B&W cartridges - I bought 2 as the whole new printer was cheaper than replacement cartridges!
