When the crew of the North Sea stationed Kinloch Bravo oil rig is due to return to the mainland, a mysterious fog rolls in and cuts off communication with the outside world. The crew will be driven to the limits of their endurance and loyalties and will be forced into a confrontation with forces that are beyond their imagination.

So The Mist on an oil rig. Sounds like my kind of thing.

Entirely shot in Scotland, released Jan 6th 2023.

Good cast, really cheap looking CGI for 2022 :(

Gave this a try and it's a bit naff. The effects are indeed pretty wonky in places and it's painfully obvious that every exterior scene is shot on a soundstage. The show really would have benefitted from a few days of location filming on a real oil rig. Sadly, it wouldn't have helped the script.

I'm a sucker for the "group of people stranded in an isolated location, battling some malevolent presence" setup. An oil rig is the perfect setting for a horror movie/show but the potential is completely wasted here. It's weird, because although the show trades on every genre convention in the book, it isn't remotely scary.

It's all very predictable and filled with all your favourite cliches. Had to laugh when one character says "don't do that, it's bad luck" and then proceeds to do the thing himself and dies the next episode. Didn't see that one coming...

I didn't hate it, though. I was bored and it passed the time easily enough. Plus it introduced me to the history of Doggerland, which apparently is not the name for the secluded car park down by the local tip.

EDIT: I forgot to mention that the conclusion to the main mystery is stupid as hell.

I kinda enjoyed it until the worst ending ever, really really bad with no payoff sadly

Not a chance of filming on a real rig, the amount of safety training that anyone who goes onto one has to do in advance, helicopter ditching scenarios etc (great fun if you get a chance), and would cost far too much!
