RE: Microsoft announces AI key on Windows 11 PCs
The scary thing is while ChatGPT etc. is programmed to not lie etc. and the example Pete gave needed human intervention to allow it to do certain things, there are many bad actors on the planet (including states) with no such reservations or limitations so them asking their AI to 'Write me a virus to attack X, Y, Z and cause maximum damage' etc. is a very real and present danger to us all. The more 'freedom' they're (the AI engine) given, the potential for damage and harm increases exponentially.
Yet, there's no stopping this train now.

Quite.
You may as well try and un-invent the wheel.

The interesting thing about humans an AI, is if you drove your car once a week on average for a year, but 12 of those trips it crashed, you'd not trust it.
But AI giving you the right answers 77% of the time... that's just fine! ;)

Conversely, 2000 people die a year as a result of road traffic accidents with humans driving, and no-one sues a car manufacturer. Now if a self driving car kills a pedestrian, Tesla will be sued to oblivion!

I would say the difference there is who is in control, and I'm pretty sure lots of people who were at the wheel when someone died did get sued!

Precisely my opinion as why autonomous vehicles will not be prevalent any time soon.
Legal not technological.
Who's liable when one chooses between hitting one person or another.
Vehicle manufacturer, software company, owner of vehicle. With the inevitable 'not being operated within parameters' 'somebody changed something' arguments.
Also I think they are far more a possibility in areas where there are only autonomous vehicles. Once you allow them out on public roads I don't think it will work.

Driverless tech is ideal for situations where there is greater control over the environment around you. DLR is the perfect example. You can see shuttle buses at airports ditching drivers, specific autonomous only lanes on motorways.
The only way I can see driverless tech working on all roads is if there is something akin to the digital switchover of TV. One day have human controlled cars only, the next day switch over to autonomous cars only. And even then, random elements like pedestrians and cyclists, and pet dogs will cause issues.
Weird stuff happens when you drive. I remember years ago, I was just minding my own business and I was victim of a bird strike. A pigeon literally divebombed my windshield and committed suicide. Now I could adapt to the bizarre circumstance. What would an autonomous car do?

Probably switch on the wipers and carry on driving

Maybe we should equip them like Bond's DB6, a shotgun behind each headlamp.

Ironically, that's exactly what I did.
