Not been around for a while as work have now blocked access to this `movie` website. :(
I`ve been playing around backing up a couple of my dvds for using on my laptop when travelling. If I make a backup copy of my disk it occasionally stalls on me during playback. I`ve also tried to backup a copy on divx so I can take it with me and also stream it using my XBox. I`m just wondering if I can expect similar pauses with the divx file (e.g. the problem occurs when transcoding the file) or is it only to do with the burning of the file onto dvd?

I had the same, stuttering playback, and was going to try ripping/ converting to svcd or some similar format. Not tried it yet but I will let you know how it goes.
Novice Alert :D :D
I would think that as the cpu/graphiics card on the laptop is processing a lower mbps transfer ratethen it may give a better playback. Admittedly the picture will be a poorer quality than DVD but it may be a reasonable compromise on quality/performance so might be alright for laptop viewing on holiday for example.
Bit of a novice so take with the proverbial pinch of salt :D

Sounds like a possible lack of compatibility between the discs you are using and the drive in the laptop. Does the laptop play original discs OK? If it does then try a different brand of DVDR, you might also want to check if the drive is happier with DVD-R or DVD+R.

I had exactly the same problem and changing brand of disc sorted the problem.

thanks for the replies guys. So effectively if I convert to divx I shouldn`t see the problem? Would it also make a difference at what speed I burn at? I do seem to notice that some disks will play on my main pc without a problem so maybe it is a compatability thing with the disks - I`ll have a try with another type.

If it is a disc problem then converting to divx/xvid isn`t the solution. Will the laptop play original factory pressed DVDs?
What brand and type of DVDR have you tried? What is the spec of the laptop?
The laptop plays original disks no problem. The disks are datawrite titaniums. I have a couple of other types of disks - I will have a look at to see if that makes a difference. I`ve tried one of the disks on my main player and it pauses as well after about 60mins or so.
I thought with divx I could convert the file on my main computer and then transfer it to my laptop - it should hopĆ¼efully play okay then if you think it`s a blank disk problem.

I always transfer movies and tv shows to divx and copy the files to the laptop hard drive to watch on my laptop, works much better that way.
