Battle Of The Budget Players !! ......

Marc Langsman (Harmless) posted this on Wednesday, 22nd November 2000, 16:51

Ok Ive been reading the postings on this site whilst trying to decide what DVD separates to get for xmas. Here is what I want:

DVD/VCD/CDR/MP3
Multi Region - including RCE stuff

I have mainly been considering the Scan2000 and Tesco-Dale 750s

Everything Ive read suggests that all the budget players have poor picture quality / various other picture-based problems.
Is there any sort of concensus as to which player fits these needs but does not suffer any major disadvantages ?

If anyone could give me pointers to good magazine reviews etc on the web that might be helpful too.

Cheers guys !

I`m not an Aiwa rocker (yet) but still it`s something worth considering.

Remember Aiwa has no on-board decoding!!! so it depend s if u have an AV amp. Otherwise Encore or Lecson might be a good choice.

I have just purchesed a scan sc-2000 in the last week after a great deal of research and wondering what to do.

I have to say that the picure quality is fantastic and is supposed to be better than the wharfedale.

I know there have been a lot of people on this site who have had problems with the scan or with scan themselves including a friend of mine who ordered his along with mine but i can only speak for my own experience.

The scan also plays CDR, CDRW MP3 and it has a Digital Decoder built in.
The machine itself is also well put together.

If you require any more assistance leave a message on here. Hope this helps.

And as most 5.1 amps now sold...including the new breed of "ProLogic" amps have built in 5.1 and Dolby decoders, who cares if it has an on board decoder in the player??

I don`t care...as the Aiwa is only £200, I`ll spend the other £200 I was gonna lay out as the start of my amp fund!

The manual for the "2nd edition" scan says it has a digital scanner built in, maybe nelley can comment futher.

P.s. Got my scan about a week ago and just discovered it can read un-finalised mp3 Cd`s

I have had a scan since the beginning of the month,
I spent up til this wednesday using it as a cd player through my Yamaha dspA5
into Kef Cresta 3 front speakers, and it sounds great.
Received my panasonic TX36PF10 TV this week and have been trying out different
DVD`s including a region 1 Mi2. The 5.1 sound to the rear Kef Cresta 1 rears
the above fronts and a Cresta centre sound great and the picture looks great as well.
jumping to chapters seem`s to be very fast as well.
So far very impressed!
Yet to try a cdr with MP3`s.

My Scan (one of the `Mark 2` models) is performing flawlessly - as is that of a friend who bought one after seeing mine (and returned his Wharfedale 750S).
Scan plays VCD`s, MP3 etc. etc. - very good video and audio performance. Works fine with CD-R and CD-RW media too.
Two collegue are also now going to buy Scan`s after seeing mine (should put a smile on Nelley`s face..).

Scan doesn`t `rock` (?) but it is an excellent DVD player.

Nice to see you have comeback to earth MicroStar:)
I wonder if Nelley will allow you to part exchange the SC2000 for the new DVD Audio Scan player I heard him say they are releasing in the New Year?
