Sky Digital plus - worth the swap?

andyrh68 (Competent) posted this on Saturday, 5th October 2002, 11:30

I`m considering swapping from SD to SD+. Can anyone tell me if it`s worth the swap? My main reason for swapping is the programme recording options with SD+. I don`t have an analogue ariel and I need a new video. So A splash out of £300 kills 2 birds. My main concern is the extra £10 a month subscription charge. It`s only £10 I know, but they`re already fleecing me for £37 a month, and if I remember rightly, the extra £10 is to finance the development of the software - which as far as I can see hasn`t progressed from when Tivo introduced their top box 2 (?) or so years ago.

I have Sky but not Sky+ so I`m talking from a neutral stand(off) point here.
The software as far as I can make out is very similar to Tivo , although it is geared around the Sky EPG. However , I remember reading that an upgrade is imminent that will allow you to record TWO programmes at the same time whilst watching a third , so that could be a plus for Sky+.
Won`t you still need a video though for when the hard disk may be full and you need / want to backup or even to watch a borrowed vid now and then ?

No
It`s not worth the swap until SKY waken the hell up and realise that £300 + £10 a month is daylight robbery of the highest order.
A recordeable DVD player makes much more sense.
I sold my video and my existing DVD player to a mate and bought a Philips 880. Killed lots of birds with one stone.
Ok, I still cannot tape one SKY channel and watch another, but then I`m not paying £10 a month for ever and ever either....
£300 for the machine + £120 a year...I ask you....shocking !
Yet they claim they cannot keep up with demand ! Bollards !!!!
I know 20+ people with SKY digital. Not one has switched to SD+ and none are planning to until the cost comes done to practically nil either.
I hate SKY...can you tell ??

Yes, go for it!

I swapped to Sky+ six months ago, and its brilliant. It is far superior to the limited TiVo. For example, you can record Box Office films to the hard drive, and you only pay for them when you actually watch them. If you change your mind about a film, don`t watch it and you don`t pay! The series link function is also good to ensure you don`t miss episodes of your favs!

I`m a Sky fan....can you tell ;-)

if u have a pc u could consider getting a dvd writer and then a tv capture card and record anything onto dvd, u can set up schedules to record a whole series etc just like tivo, and it works out less than buying a standard dvd recorder, just takes a little more effort
