urgent help needed - best dvd player for around £100

gednog (Competent) posted this on Thursday, 19th September 2002, 12:19

I`ve got a bit of an urgent problem I need some help with. Its my Dads birthday at the weekend on I`ve foolishly told my Mum I`m going to get him a DVD player. The problem I`ve got was I was hoping to get the multiregion Toshiba 110E from richer sounds but they`re all sold out and unsure when they`re getting more in stock.

Whats the suggestions for a good player around this price. It really needs to be multiregion or hackable and being of the `older` generation would probably prefer a brand name.

I don`t think you will find any well known brand named DVD players that are multiregion for that price

Instead, try the LG5253 for £99 at curry`s (its multiregion via a CD disc, instructions which can be downloaded if you followed the threads in this forum) or the HAUS 615L at www.jungle.com which is going for a song at £99 (excluding delivery). Seems to have good reviews and is multiregional via remote hack

You could try the Samsung S224. It`s £119 in the shops and £109 from Tesco online (haven`t bothered looking at any of the cheaper online sites but I reckon you should be able to get it for around £100 if you look hard enough)

It`s multiregion via a simple remote hack (but not macrovision I think), plays cd-r, cd-rw, vcd, svcd mp3 and had an excellent review in What tv and video a few months back. Picture and sound quality are very good for such a cheap player.

Well if we`re departing from brand names might as well go to argos and pick up an alba 108 for £70 (lovely machine region free from the box) or some Tesco`s have the alba 114 discounted at the same price.

Cheers for all the help everyone. I settled on the Cyberhome from Richers in the end and he was chuffed with it. It really came down to running out of time and the cyberhome seeming to have a pretty good lot of features for the money. Its a little chunky but on the quick glance I had at it, it looked pretty good.
