RE: London Congestion charge ...........
I thought London`s Congestion Charge was precisely for that : Congestion.
Seems to me that this is just an excuse to generate more revenue for the London Borough under the guise of the environment.
I have no objections saving the environment but these ECO-Talibans, as I call them, are effectievly making life much more difficult for the motorist who needs to drive to go to work.
Anyone with a bit of sense, will understand that charging `polluting lorries` etc will drive up food prices etc. And people are surprised with inflation, etc.
If the government wishes us to drive less polluting cars. how about subsidising purchase of cleaner cars. For me, spending £5000 on a car (whether it is clean or not) is too expensive for me.

Any duties to be paid on books imported into UK via Amazon.com ???
All,
I`m sure that this has been answered many times but I could not find the necessary thread.
I wish to order a book from amazon.com (USA), rather than order the same book through amazon.co.uk (UK). This is because the former charges $87 (about £45) and the latter charges £85.
Assuming amazon.com deliver into the UK and do not force me to use amazon.co.uk, would a book be subject to import duties, taxes, handling charges, etc.
If so, how much ?
Thanks in advance.

RE: 40 lashes in the Sudan - opinions please?
Quote:
The UK Moslums here, must get sick of this extremism..
Yes we do...and I believe plenty of Muslims have already spoken out about how ridiculous the Sudanese Government has been for adopting the line that it took. Unless you missed the news, there were plenty of Muslims Clerics and Spokesmen/Women on air telling the Sudanese Officials that they are wrong.
As for how it is possible for the Sudanese to Listen to Muslims rather than the British Government... well the 2 Muslims probably gave them a heart-to-heart chat and told them how the Sudanese actions have done harm to the name of Islam and was giving people the impression it was an intolerant religion (which it is not).
Also...they were not just 2 "Muslims" but
BARONESS Warsi
LORD Ahmed
Or does being a Baroness and Lord not count as BRITISH Officials ?

RE: 40 lashes in the Sudan - opinions please?
As a Muslim, I believe the punishment is unwarranted.
Muslims tend to object when the name of "Mohammad" is used in a derogatory fashion. An example being the Danish cartoons.
It is beyond me how a teacher can be deemed to deserve punishment for allowing MUSLIM children to VOTE and they themselves chose to name a cuddly Teddy Bear (a childs favourite toy) after their favourite name/figure (which is the Prophet of Islam.."Mohammad").
Do I punish my child if out of love and affection for their prophet they refer to their favourite toy as "Mohammad". of course not.
Seems to me that some Sudanese Muslims are grossly ignorant of Islamic law and when punishment needs to be applied.
This is no-where near the scale of the Danish Cartoons.
I for one, will be most upset if the teacher got punished for this "innocent" mistake.
If the teacher chose an animal toy which was clearly offensive to Muslims and then encouraged the children to name that toy as "Mohammad", then that would be entirey different.

UK Identity Crisis Well, it had to happen, and so here you have it - those mislaid HMRC discs going for a song down at eBay:
Since we have no doubt the powers that be down at the world`s fave tat bazaar will move rather more quickly to remove this auction than they do to act on iffy vendors, here`s the accompanying text:
Here we have two CD-R`s for auction. They are not blank, but seem to have some sort of database written to them. I found them in my local courier firm`s sorting office, addressed to
"Her Majesties Audit Office - Child Benefits Section" and marked
"Sensitive HM Government Information - DO NOT LOSE - ENSURE THESE DISKS DO NOT FALL INTO THE HANDS OF THE CRIMINAL FRATERNITY"
They were obviously surplus to requirements.
I haven`t read the data myself. The database appears to have approximately 25 milion records in it, but is password protected, so it is impossible to read it and it`s definitely impossible to extract any bank account data from it.
Any information that you might discover (should you be lucky enough to win the auction for these useful items and read the database thereon) must be kept in the strictest confidence.
0.99p start and no reserve, so grab yourself a bargain. All profit from these items will be donated to Sue Ryder Care.
Cash on collection ONLY please from Portsmouth PO8, since we wouldn`t want these to get lost in the post!
PLEASE NOTE: Government departments should contact me by email before bidding, since they will have to be vetted for competence before entrusting such items to them.

Renewing Mobile Phone Contracts....affects Credit Rating ?
Is this a windup ?
I`m on month 11 of my 12 month contract with a mobile operator. I intend to cancel (giving the usual months notice) and get another phone on another 12 months contract, perhaps with the same operator or another operator (depending upon the deal). I normally do this via 3rd party sites such as e2save, CPW, etc.
The operator tried to convince me to `upgrade` but I told her that she would be unable to match the price that I have enjoyed for the last 11 months because the phone was on a special clearance deal last year. £2.99 effective per month, for 200 mins talk across anynetwork (for 12 months). So, there was no way they could get me to `upgrade` unless they matched the price.
I told her that for the last 5 years, my mobile phones were always clearance phones on 12 months contract with very special deals and on each occassion I have cancelled the contract at the end of the 12 months and bought another phone (on another 12 months contract) because this method tends to be cheaper than upgrading. (How cheap is 12 months for £0per month ,via cashback, for example)
She said, if I were to do this then I would loose the browny points accumulated on this phone.
Anyway, the operator then dropped a bombshell and stated that each time I terminate a mobile phone contract and get another mobile on another 12 month contract (either with the same operator or not), I am inviting a credit check each time which will go against my credit rating because a credit check is being made.
Is this true ?
I have 2 phones on 12 months contract (one for me and one for the missus), and every year I terminate the contracts @ months 12 , and get 2 more for the next 12 months.
So, according to her, every year this means that at least 2 credit checks are being done on me for 2 mobile phone contracts.
How does this count against me, if I have been paying by direct debit each time and on time ?. I`ve never had a mobile contract refused but I am concerned that if I were to take out a loan then the companies may not like me terminating contracts every year. But, I thought this is what people did with mobile phones.

RE: Eid Mubarak to everyone
Quote:
If you are so insistent on following when the moon is seen in Saudi Arabia for celebrating Eid rather than seeing it yourself, you should set a clock to Saudi time and do your prayers according to the time there rather than the time here
Well I`m glad you said that because there are Muslims who say that if some Muslims are so insistant of following the Moon Sighting of Saudia Arabia then they should also follow the prayer timetables of Saudia Arabia too.
Prayer timetables are based upon motions of THE SUN.
Before sunrise (FAJR)
After sun crosses the high zentih (ZUHR)
Evening (ASR)
After Sunset (MAGRIB)
Nightime (ISHA)
So the prayer timetables are associated with the motion of the sun with respect to its position in the horizon of the country. So, one cannot follow the Prayer timetables of (say Saudia Arabia) in the UK because if (say) saudia arabia does the `before sunrise` prayers then in the UK we are still in the `night-time` phase because we are 3 hours BEHIND Saudia arabia.
BUT, EID (which is a DAY) is based upon sighting of the Moon. The start of a Calender MONTH.
So, it is perfectly possible to base a decision of whether EID is on a particular day in the UK based upon the (claimed) sighting of the MOON in Saudia Arabia, BUT NOT follow the prayer timetables of Saudia Arabia.
Not a contradiction because MOON sighting relates to start of a new calender month. Location of the SUN with respect the Horizon signifies prayer timetable.
The two are not associated.
Now if the prayers were associated with the position of the MOON and not the relative postion of the SUN then one could have a valid argument.

RE: Eid Mubarak to everyone
Not wishing to turn this into a thread where one Muslim is arguing with another, which some would claim it is, I have to ask
1) Is that HADITH you have quoted considered SAHIH "authentic".
That makes a whole difference.
2) Do you think Eid can be 2 different days as suggested by the HADITH.
So, there can be 2 different start/end times of the month of fasting.
So, 2 different nights of power ?.
Strange, I thought there was only one.
We can`t all be correct. one is right. other wrong. Question is who ?
Even if the HADITH is authentic, do you think the Prophet preached unity or disunity ?
Other HADITHs calling for unity will outway this one.
3) When lunar/solar eclipse can only be seen from 1 or 2 countries and not the whole world, does that mean that the lunar/solar eclipse has not occured at all (for those who did not see it) ?. Those who did not see it need to trust that the lunar/solar eclipse occured.
4) The graph you have shown where South America sees the new moon 1st is ONLY because it is the map of the world where the `start-time` (or reference) is taken as America. So when the new moon creeps from the left of the map, then South America sees the new moon 1st. Try shifting the whole map so that Saudia Arabia is on the left and is the reference and voila, Saudia Arabia will become the 1st country to see it. Please don`t be fooled by the map.
It`s a bit like saying when does the week start.
Some consider it Monday.
Others consider it Sunday.
Depends which you take as the reference.
I`m not having a go but clearly stating that all the criteria for defining the new moon was agreed in the 80s from scholars of diiferent schools of thought. Somehow they discarded it and we are back to square one and disagreeing.
If you still believe one can have Eid on 2 different days consider this.
The world is 24 hours.
If you do your early morning prayer say at 6.00am in the morning (FAJR), then you know that because the world is 24 hours then at that time someone is not doing the same prayer because for others it may be midday, afternoon, night-time, etc. But what you do know is that when you wakeup again the next morning (24 hours later) at 6.00am and do your early morning prayer again, then every other muslim in the world has also done his morning prayer during that 24 hour period.
So too with the new moon.
If one country has sited the new moon, and declares EID then within 24 hours everyone else should have declared EID. It makes no sense to go beyond the 24 hours.
If Saudia Arabia declared that they SAW the new moon on Thursday night and other Countries such as Morroco, said they saw it too, then since these countries are ahead of the UK in the timeline then surely, we should accept it.
What I find frustrating is when people live in the same Country such as the UK, they can celebrate EID on 3 different days and still maintain they are correct.
That is when Muslims become a laughing stock.
When one set of kids take leave on one day from School to do Eid.
Another set of kids take leave on another day from School to do the same EID. etc
What do you think the Teachers are thinking when one set takes leave one day and another set takes leaves on another day and they all say we are "Muslims".
Irrespective of who cited the Moon when, for the sake of unity we have to accept.
Which is the reason why I do it when Saudia make the claim. If the decision was wrong, I am not accountable but the perosn who made the claim.
What is worse is making our own opinions and dividing the matter so that same EID is spread over several days.
Whats worse ?
1) A show of unity where you may have chosen the wrong day but Eid is celebrated ONCE
or
2) lack of unity and doing EID on several days where only 1 group is correct.
I believe 2 is more damaging.
Sorry for the rant again.
I wont be ranting again but I hope the brother understands
PS : rehan, we can always discuss this offline by Emailing me

RE: Eid Mubarak to everyone
some people folow Saudi Arabia and have Eid with them
Rehan,
It`s not a case of `following` this country or that.
Following Saudia Arabia or otherwise.
What is boils down to is that some communities have different views on when EID should start. Even when everything has been agreed, some would rather follow their desires than what is correct. There was agreement in the 80s on what consitutes `the new moon` but that has been ignored by those who wish to be `different` and thus dividing the Muslims even in the UK.
In reality and religiously speaking, there are a few aspects to sighting the new moon.
1) Witness the new-moon
2) Trust is has been seen.
People differ on 1). Do we do it via the naked eye or via a telescope or via calculations.
Those who go via naked eye will not see a `new` moon until the new moon is at least 3 days old (and thus 3 days too late). So, one has to use a telescope to see the new moon for the new moon exists for a few minutes before it disappears. And one needs to know where one is looking, so calculations come in order.
Then once this has been seen ,it is duty bound on other Muslims to TRUST this observation.
So, what should happen is that the entire Muslim world should seek out the moon on any night. If ANY (and I mean ANY) Muslim country spots the moon then it is duty bound for other Muslim countries to accept the sighting and do EID within 24 hours of the siting.
That is the ideal condition. And if Saudia Arabia is privilaged to be in a position to `see` the new moon 1st then so be it.
But alas, since each and every Muslim country is divided along religious and ethinc lines then even if one Muslim country has sighted the moon then another country will reject it and say "the moons not sighted until we have seen it".
For Gods sake, there is ONLY ONE MOON and if it has been sighted ANYWHERE then thats it. YOu don`t wait until you have seen it.
If Saudia Arabia has sighted the moon, and is in a privilaged position to see it first then then all Muslims should trust the sighting and do EID asap. Even if you disagree, do it for the sake of UNITY.
But some Muslim `hate` the arabs so even if the arabs sighted the moon they want to be `different` and do it on another day. And yet these Muslims go Mecca and trust the day of Hajj.
Some claim if a certain Mosque goes by Saudia Arabia sighting then we can go by the sighting in Pakistan.
Some claim if other countries have seen the moon, we defer until we have seen it on our land.
This is all claptrap. People need to read what is FACT.
FACT is,
Look for the moon.
If it has been sighted in ANY country then trust the sighting and do EID asap.
That is the ruling.
In the UK we have had 3 EIDS.
Can you believe this. 3 EIDS in the UK.
One on Friday - based upon TRUSTING what Saudia Arabia had said, that they sighted the moon on Thursday night. This is the one I did.
One on Saturday, when the `British` Muslims saw the new Moon for themselves (despite Saudia Arabia telling them they saw it the night before). So they deferred the EID by 1 day because they did not trust what Saudia Arabia had seen and waited illegally to see the new moon for themselves.
One on Sunday when some Pakistani Muslims (in the UK) decided to follow the EID day of Pakistan, deferring EID for 2 whole days.
Has ANYONE heard of 3 Christmans days.
No wonder Muslims are a laughing stock around the world.
RANT OVER...

Which Software is best to build websites...
All
I`ve just registered my 1st domain name and I am now searching for a suitabel software to develop my 1st web pages.
I`ve registered my domain name with www.123-reg.co.uk and they offer INSTANTSITE as a quick and easy way to setup the 1st pages of my website. I suspect INSTANTSITE is available as long as I am with the above hosting site.
I`ve also heard of
Microsoft`s FRONTPAGE / Expression Web
Adobe Dreamweaver / Website-Webpage design
Are there any others that are easy to use ?
My website will be for information purposes and contain pictures and FLASH-based (or other) animations. They may incorporate audio clips to be played with the likes of real-player. In the fullness of time, the website may contain a `forum` but that is at a much later stage.
There will be no selling of items so the need to handle `orders and card details` is not necessary.
It must be simple to setup, allow me to add my own pictures in any arrangement that I want, and format the text and pages to my liking.
I prefer WYSIWYG type of tools as I have minimal knowledge of html coding.
Thanks
RE: Ramadan starts tomorrow - month of fasting
Ramadan Mubarak (Congratulations) to all Muslims.
It is a special time to reflect upon what you have been given by the Almighty GOD.
By abstaining from what you desire the most during the day (eating, drinking, intimacy) one draws closer to the Almighty, really appreciates what one has been given, makes one become more compassionate to the needy and the poor.
The first sip of a glass of water (after a day of fasting) is unbelievable.
Personally, it`s not the absence of eating and drinking from sunrise to sunset that presents me problems. I feel more tired due to getting up early in the morning and the breaks in sleep as a result of this, rather than hunger alone.

How exactly can the `public` have access to the information when one has to cough up at least £3 for every enquiry about who own a particular house (according to landregistry website).
Not exaclty available for "free" to the Joe Public.
Granted that criminals could spend monies to find out who owns what property.

RE: CARPET OR LAMINATE ? - PLEASE HELP
Definately Laminate.
Yes, it does show up all the dust (and mites, insects) but considering that this dust and creepy crawlies would otherwise be hidden within carpet fibres, would you rather a small child crawled on an apparently `clean` carpet and breathed in the hidden dust (and give rise to long term respiratory problems) or on laminate where the dust, ants can be easily wiped cleaned.
I have asthma and found my symptoms much better once I had laminate flooring, compared to carpets.
PS,
Rooms look alot cleaner with laminates rather than carpets.
Laminates are `cold` in the winter months, as opposed to carpets but one could always position a small `carpet` rug near one sits.

RE: POLL: Should we have a £100Mil Mega Mosque built?
As a Muslim, I would ordinarily be in favour of another Mosque where there is a need.
However, I feel that we already have enough Mosques in London and elsewhere in the Country which are virtually empty during normal days and only packed full during Friday noon and during the month of Ramadan.
Also, most Mosques have committees chaired by self-appointed `elders` who are very protective of their positions, who are traditionlists rather than Islamists, to the extent that no 2 committees of 2 Mosques can agree. The youths issues are not served at all.
So, another Mosque will invite another division along the lines of "My Mosque is better and more beautiful and suprior than yours", rather than serving the actual issues within a Muslim Community.
So, I object to this Mosque only on these grounds.
If present Mosques cannot agree on vital Muslim issues, or even agree when Ramadan or Eid Festivals are, then I cannot see how another Mosque will help.
The money "from the UK and from Abroad" is better spent educating the Muslim masses, and re-educating the commitees that a Mosque is not just a place of worship, but a centre of studies. Money is better spent building associations and support structure for the recent Muslim converts who have real issues and need our help.

RE: Judge lets off rapist of girl, 10
This is disturbing.
I thought rape was rape, and was punishable no matter what age the victim is. To make excuses such as "the girl had dressed provocatively and looked like she was 16." is going to invite other offenders.
I seem to recall an Austrialin Muslim Shiekh who was lambasted by the Australians and the World when he suggested that women who do not dress sensibly (cover up) are much like "uncovered meat" asking to be raped, etc. Yet, here we have a judge who is, in effect, saying the same thing.
And how does "jailed for 2 years" equate to "he will be out in 4 months" ?
The Legal systems gone all mad.
Anyone recommend burn-media.co.uk ?

Seems to be a site offering cheaper DVDs, MP3`s, INK, etc
Have used SVP, ebuyer, 7dayshop in the past but never this outlet.
