Car tyre brands...

RJS (undefined) posted this on Saturday, 11th January 2014, 11:21

So out of my depth here! I have a choice for replacing all four of my tyres...

Budgets at £225
Lassa for £295
Avon for £325
Uniroyal for £325

Atm I'm leaning towards the Lassa ones as they are apparently made in association with Bridgestone, and will last longer than the budget ones.

Those prices include fitting, balancing, etc.

Try BlackCircles.com

It was cheaper for me to buy the tyres from there and have them delivered to the local garage for fitting then it was to buy the tyres from the actual garage I was taking the car to!  Crazy.

Re: brands; I've never heard of any of them!  Try and find out the compounds they are made from as this affects how quickly they wear.

This is your important EU sticky label on tyres, and now must be shown by law (it is also on tyre websites for each make and type of tyre). You can decide on which tyre is best for road holding (rain symbol), fuel efficient (pump symbol) and tyre road noise in dB (best are 70dB or less, above that its noisy).

My priority is road noise, so get quietest for the money.

some-one at work bought some new tyres recently he was looking at a site which clearly showed those labels against the different tyres, He was aiming fo rbest value for money fuel cosumotion, I think he said B is best you're likely to get, I'll see him on Monday so will ask if he was just looking at a random site he googled which had tryes or if it was a good review/comparison site.

I think I've read in a few places that cheap tyres are generally a false economy (like many things I guess), as they score low on fuel economy, and don't last very long.

I suppose a lot of it depends on how much you use your car, and what for, I had bargain bucket tyres on my Corsa, as I only used it to get to work if it was pouring with rain (a 10 minute drive) and to go to Tesco and back.

now I spend 1hr-90mins a day in my Zafira on motoray and country lanes getting to work and back so I guess I'd consider more carefly now when getting tyres.

Tyres are something I would never economise on.  Just think of the loads they need to handle.  You have four small(ish) contact patches with the road to transmit cornering, braking and accelerating forces.  Personally I'd always stick with well known brands, even if they cost a bit more.  Of the four you mentioned, Avon and Uniroyal are well known brands.  I've never heard of Budgets and Lassa.  As admars said, it depends on what sort of driving you do and what car you drive.  The tyres on my car are £180 EACH.

I think Lassa are a joint venture between Bridgestone and a Turkish company.

Most budget brand tyres are a major brand catching a portion of that market without compromising their name.

I've been using budgets on my zaf for about 7 years, before that Michelin and Pirelli at 3x the cost, and the only difference I found was road noise.

Funnily enough most budgets my mate orders into the garage have an A rated sticker on them and I mentioned that kinda made the system seem stupid.

Each to their own though!
