Having been a postie for nearly 24 years, times are now looking grim. We have received a 3 year pay offer from management and this would be protected in the event of us being sold/floated. It does however come with strings attached.
I personally try and do the best job I can with the tools provided but we have a local management team who are useless, putting it mildly. A lot of us realise that change was needed but in all honesty, RM don`t give a toss about the customer. Alan Leighton and Adam Crozier set the company on the downward spiral but they got big pay offs and are now nowhere to be found.
It`s great having all these "free" shares but to be perfectly honest, I`d rather have a secure job for the next 20 years.

It will i fear be an unmitigated disaster :(, they will after time cherry pic and rural communities will soon get either an expensive service, or a 2nd or 3rd class service...or more likely both....I do not understand privatising companies who are making money..never have never will...the banks especially baffle me...we now own the banks...I mean really a vast % is public owned....and in 3 years or so they will begin to make billions again in profil..that money would pay us out of the shambles they got us into in the 1st place....in what...a decade maybe...but no...we will sell it and give it back to the guys who will again make billions..this time for themselves :(

I used to know a postie, he said the same thing. In fact it's a very common story in the PO. :/

From what I can gather the senior management have been trying to set up the PO for privatisation for years.

A few years ago the RM was broken up into 3 internal groups - Distribution (vans/lorries), deliveries and mail centres. There was also a creation of regions which was totally geared up to sell off in groups/individuals. This never came off and when labour won in `97 it was put on the back burner.
We had a "phoney" share scheme about 5 years ago. It was called Share In Success and if the company performed well then we got a payout on our shares for 3 years. Years 1 & 2 paid out and then 1 day before the 3rd year payout, we was told that the company had done bad, the shares was worthless and you`re getting bugger all. People who took EVR 2 weeks prior to the payout day where all paid in full. So in 2 weeks they went from being worth about £550 to £0.

lol, wouldn`t we all, no such thing nowadays.

and doesn`t everyone think their management are useless, and don`t know what it`s like to actually do the job?

I think can count the number of items I`ve had go missing due to RM on one hand in my lifetime, which I think is a good average, Yodel on the hand have a 100% failure rate! my local has been on watchdog for being useless, hopefully cost cuts won`t mean they go that way :(

I remember one time I emailed RM as my credit card statements were taking over a week to arrive, they apologised, said they`d look into it, and sent me some free stamps :)

I wonder how it will effect prices, and Amazon etc offering "free" p&p, i guess we`ll see if prices all suddenly go up by a £1 or more and free P&P continues, or you have to pay P&P.

in all honesty its only eBay and amazon that keep the post office afloat with the amount of parcels... l cant remember the last time I wrote and sent a letter via Royal Mail... but parcel prices are becoming confusing and expensive...

Christmas cards are cheap but the cost of the stamps is ridiculous, same for birthday cards... at least half a dozen times a year I have to drive 5 miles to the local main office to collect cards and pay £1.19 for the privelage as they are 11p short due to size of the posted item... way to go RM you have destroyed your own business!

Its easy to blame the management, I am sure like in most organisations there are elements that are incompetent, but unfortunately there are also posties who clearly take the p1$$ and have lost a lot of the publics trust by stealing money out of childrens birthday cards/Christmas cards, and dvd/cds that never arrive... and some that feel they are entitled to take their sick leave as an extra allowance on top of their holidays!

I have some very good friends who are posties, they work hard for the money they earn, but the stories they tell me, would make your hair turn white, or like mine fall out!!! I really fear for them and their future security...

My local posties who deliver to me, I cannot fault, we let them sign on our behalf, they know where to leave things if we are not home, or who to leave things with...

Gearbox... take your shares, and I really wish you luck and every success for the future.

For the last two years we have had just `temps` delivering the mail, never the same face twice, and some never mail reaches us or ends up at a different address, and if anyone dares send us a parcel in a DVD shape it just dissapears. I have to make sure anything sent to us is recorded delivery.

I liked it better when the postman was responsible, but it seems with a `temp position` there is no incentive to deliver properly.
