Page 1 of Can a teacher show an 18 rated film to a class of 13 year olds for the purposes of `education`?

Friend`s daughter has told her mum her drama teacher wants to show his class of teenagers the movie `Seven` as a demonstration of the seven deadly sins.

Decapitations and strap-on evisceration aside, isn`t it illegal to do this, even if they gets the kids` parent`s permission?

Wow, I think looking back a lot of Se7en was implied, but even so, whilst I'm sure some 13 year olds might be mature enough to watch it, others maybe not. Either way, for a teacher to want to do it? That's just wrong!

Is this teacher a religious nut? It's an odd thing to do even for one of those.

Not sure it's illegal though, but I'd be amazed if they went ahead with this without at least getting signed consent from every parent.

It could just be a great prank by your friends daughter though. :)

Not sure if it`s illegal (I would imagine it is), but we`re certainly not, under any circumstances, allowed to show our students films that are above their age, even if it is for educational purposes. As much as anything else, it would be bad publicity for the school if the local press got hold of it...

I remember being in the `video club` at school where we would all pay 50p or something and watch a movie through the projector in a class room.

I know we saw Kentucky Fried Movie and Everything you wanted to know about sex, but were afraid to ask.
I think I was 12 or 13!

Very wrong. I teach drama and do the seven deadly sins scheme of work...but to illustrate I used an animation.
I would never show even a clip to illustrate, I don`t think there is anything that could be shown in that?
Even if I plan to show an 18 in my lesson (generally A level classes) I have to write to all the parents and get ask them to contact me if there would be any issue in showing that classification.

The press would have a field day!

The teacher may want to show it but I`ll bet his next years wages the head won`t.
As has already been said the press would love it. Just the sort of thing the Mail would love to get it`s teeth into.

I have previously been asked to allow my younger son to watch movies that have a higher certificate than his age at home to help with his studies. It was cert 12 films while he was at primary school and cert 15 films since he was 12 (he`s now 13).

My 16 year old is taking GCSE film studies this year and he was been watching cert 18 films at school without my consent to write essays about (Watchmen springs to mind but there have been others)

How does the teacher propose to avoid copyright infringement?
