Here is a bit of advice I got from an agent a few months ago, he said you should list your employment history in reverse order and for each bit say, this is where I worked, this is what I did, these are the skills I used and this is what I learned. But it probably depends a lot on what sort of area you wish to work in.

I was also told to tailor each CV for each application, it`s a pain in the arse, but is better. You can flesh out previous roles more suitable to one you`re applying for, and your title etc.

as well as what you did where you worked etc as Rob says above, say how it benefited the company/what impact it had (if good :) )

only if you have room, best if they`re relevant, or particularly interesting, but not too flambouyant.

e.g. if you`re into off piste skiing, and applying for an office job, that may be bad as they may assume you`ll want lots of time off at Christmas, and may be off with broken legs.

but if say you`re a cub scout master, then that would be worth mentioning if you`re going to be ateam leader, or if you`re treasurer for a local group etc.

I think mine has 1 line at the bottom saying I enjoying cycling, playing football, and mentions some non owkr related It interests.

there is another way of doing CVs which I haven`t used but was told about ( When I got made redundant company i used to work for sent me on some seminars, group sessions, and 1 to 1s with consultant that were surprisingly helpful) where you just list your skills in details in order of relevance later you just list companies worked for with dates

that is generally better for older ppl, or if the job you`re applying for isn`t similar to what you`ve done recently

Put all the relevant stuff u want your potential new employer to see on the first page
(if the CV is longer than one page - which I`m sure it is).  They`ll want something to immediately catch the eye espec. if they got a lot of them to look at.  Good luck.

Its worth (depending on the job being apllied for) to get your C.V professionally compiled on a one to one session :)

the problem with those services is they can charge a lot, and I remember a "pro" seeing my CV suggested some changes, another one saw the new one, suggested different changes, everyone likes slightly different things in terms of layout, so it`s best to make sure the content is right, then the look fairly generic, as although I know you need it to stand out, if you use some bizarre layout or font it`s more likely to be off putting.
