I think whats even more mind blowing is the cameras survived the journey up then down and the impact! - had more atmosphere (excuse the pun) than any sci fi movie soundtrack i have seen in years!

And surely they dont retrieve those things and use them again??

Not any more they don`t. But yeah, they were designed to be reused. It was only the external tank that was discarded.
