RE: Digital Big Brother will cut you off
This one, along with ID cards, really needs to be killed off once and for all. I get that the creative industries need protecting from people who are exploiting them for money.
Unfortunately the government fails to understand it is the companies in the industries that are the problem, not us.
Musicians should make money from their concerts, and by god they do if they sell out well. Film is a more difficult scenario though, but I`m not sure how much piracy actually hurts the film industry in comparison to say poor multiplexes where people TALK all the sodding time, or they cant even show the film in the right aspect ratio without being told to.
3D cinema is the one thing that is making me want to go again.

There has been speculation in the British press that Lord Mandelson intervened personally on the issue after meeting record label founder David Geffen.
A spokesman for the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills denied the link.
"Lord Mandelson does not believe Digital Britain is even on David Geffen`s radar. There was no discussion on this with Geffen," he said.
Pure coincidence I`m sure (Not)
Obviously being a lying, cheating tea leaf is to be kept as a privilege for those that govern us alone.

Have you heard Mark Kermodes take on this RJS?
He reckons it`s solely to prevent piracy and keep Hollywoods grip on things.
Snaps
I used to be with it, but then they changed what `it` was.
Now, what I`m with isn`t it, and what`s `it` seems weird and scary

It`s kind of embarrassing if you can buy political support for the price of a meal, as allegedly David Geffen has. When the Tories were last in power, the minimum price had to be delivered under a toilet door in a fairly bulky brown envelope.
If I buy my local MP a bag of chips, what kind of legislation do you think he`d get through for me?
Piracy should be a purely civil matter. The film and music industries should not be given special legal treatment by the Government to support their revenue. Or are we getting into the "What`s Good For Corporate America Is Good For Britain" mindset?

3D is a pointy gimmick, its an improvement of the 20th Century 3-D, but still won`t get people in to the cinemas, for these simple reasons which are:
Expensive cinema tickets, expensive popcorn and drink, which you do have a choice not to buy, but at the same time you`re not allowed to bring food of your own.
Ignorant people talking whilst you're watching the movie, people getting up and down constantly during the movie, you do get the occasional knob who answers his/her mobile, your seat being rocked by someone kicking the seats.
Teenagers being loud and obnoxious, and the incident that happened in Leeds where that woman had bleach thrown in her face, because she complained, will make patrons wary of speaking out, or even go to watch the latest kids movie.
Also bad word of mouth via the internet, such as IMDB reviewers, Youtubers, Podcasters, or on websites such as this, then a lot of people won`t go and see the movie.
Illegal downloading is only a small problem, even if the government clamped down, and no one in the entire country downloaded, it`s still not going to get the majority of the population back in to the cinemas.

They seem to think that if we can`t download it we will rush out and buy it,not so a bit of try before you buy can result in sales.

It`s all about phantom dollars, though, isn`t it? Hollywood and the music industry have been convinced by their internet gurus that every download is a lost sale. The people who download the latest Jim Cameron movie or the latest Britney Aguilera track wouldn`t pay for kosher copies in the first place.
The weird thing is I agree with Hollywood and the Music Industry about genuine piracy. By all means stamp out the camcorder crowd who video the latest movie and then have thousands of copies made in a Malaysian pressing plant to sell on Preston market. By all means go after the people distributing the latest movies and music tracks over the internet.
Just don`t demonise all downloaders and filesharers. P2P gives people the ability to share more than the latest music and movies - there`s a lot of stuff out there on the internet that just isn`t available through conventional channels because the copyright holders can`t be arsed making it available. Copyright can be as much about preventing people from accessing materials. Hollywood is already having problems having to change music cues on television releases because of music clearance difficulties. Sooner or later this love of control is going to bite them in the bum - where it`s impossible to produce anything without having to obtain legal clearance for everything down to the view out of the window.
Legislating against downloaders will only mean innocent law-abiding users of the internet getting accused and being branded as criminals, and it can only alienate consumers - people who at the end of the day are the customers of Hollywood and the Music Industry and who ultimately pay their wages.

I consider myself an optimist, albeit an optimist with cynical tendencies and a dark side that Lucifer himself would find a little creepy. (Perhaps you've noticed.) You don't normally associate cynicism with an upbeat pov. But I have exactly that combination and will defend it.
Heartily glad that I don`t have to learn how to spell Chiwetel Ejiofor.

My heart really does bleed lumpy custard for the movie industry and their lost profits, given what they do reap from movie goers:
ch ching
As for music, the biggest cut of any format (including digital) has, and I`m sure always will go to the retailer, and the record company - the band themselves are probably about 5th in the queue, so even when we were paying up to £15 for a cd, they were probably only seeing about £2 of that.
Long before file sharing raised it`s `ugly` head, live music, and merchandise sales kept many a band afloat when record sales were been low - and in my experience, this was generally because record companies didn`t do enough to promote most of the bands on their label.
Record companies are well aware of the revenue that can be gleaned from playing live, so much so, that new bands` contracts will invariably have a clause that allows the record company a % of those takings too.
Live a life you love, use a god you trust, and don`t take it all too seriously
