Rucksack recommendations...

r8sso (Elite) posted this on Thursday, 17th July 2008, 12:46

Can anyone on here recommend me good rucksack for when I go travelling? I`ve found a few which look good but I don`t recognise the make and they seem a bit cheap compared with the few branded ones I`ve come across. Is it worth paying the extra money for a brand considering how much I`m going to be using it? (12 month travelling)

This one seems really good and I like the idea of a detachable wash bag too.

I have 2 and they are both North Face so I can highly recommend them.

Just don`t get one that`s too big cos when it`s full it`s a real booger! I had a huge when when I went travelling. I probably could`ve carried my wife in it like Luke did with Yoda...

Mate,

dont` worry too much about the zip-together bag thing, `cos once you`re 2 months in you`ll never put them together you`ll have so much misshapen rubbish in there the zips will bust.

And that washbag on the outside... you`ll want to stick it inside most of the time or it`ll get dragged off by keen porters / bus drivers.

Just get a decent straight-up rucksac with top and bottom opening, and a small separate daysac. And you can always buy that washbag to stick inside.

Have you thought about something like the berghaus mule? Has wheels for dragging, and straps for shoulders. If you`re not trekking for days it`s ok on your back for a while.

Northface are also top knotch.

125 Litres! I might have to take a reality check! I was looking at 70-80 litres with detachable day pack! I even considered 65+15 at one point.

If I can get some time off work I`m going to go and try a few packs. I can`t remember the size of the backpack I used when I went travelling after uni!

Found a Berghaus Jalan (70+15) on amazon which looks good. Few pairs of shorts, few t-shirts and a couple of pairs of shoes... that should be enough for 12 months travelling!

Yep I would go for 65-80 litres anything bigger means you just carry more junk. If you are going to be doing some hard trekking etc make sure you get one with very good back support.

A simple but often forgotten thing is waist strap, means you can losen the shoulders a bit and carry the weight on your centre of gravity so to speak making it easier.

Get one with a water bottle slot on the side, most decent bags come with the waterproof cover, or you can get some with all sorts of fancy locks to your bed so it doesnt get nicked in a hostel etc.

Best bet go to a camping shop failing that Millets, Blacks etc and look and try on a few, get them to stuff it with sleeping bags or jumpers to see what it feels like full.

Make sure you get seam sealer even if it is waterproof best to double check, wet clothes suck.

For note I have a berghaus 65 litre pack that is about 10 years old still goiung strong. Though it has an aluminium back frame which most bags no longer have.

Go to ChavWorld (SportSoccer, or whatever it`s called this week), they`ve usually got Karrimor rucksacks for a decent price in there, if you don`t mind queuing with the families of 7 buying a 2 weeks holidays worth of trackie bottoms and Donnay t-shirts !
