Those that do not remember history are condemned to repeat it.

I consider myself an optimist, albeit an optimist with cynical tendencies and a dark side that Lucifer himself would find a little creepy. (Perhaps you've noticed.) You don't normally associate cynicism with an upbeat pov. But I have exactly that combination and will defend it.

Unfortunately it`s not coming to anything.
It`s mostly going away from any sense of what was good about it.
We`re being led by increasingly self seeking, divisive idiots who are convinced they know what is good for us and are going to force it on us at any price.

In the words of Dennis Leary. "Life sucks! get a helmet."

I was reading about this last week. Its a hoax. Read it here
Quote:
The Holocaust teaching controversy of 2007 was a controversy sparked by sensationalist claims mainly circulated in e-mails which stated that teaching of the Holocaust had been banned in British schools because of fears that this could offend Muslim pupils.

I could go on a rant and say its lies designed to generate illfeeling towards Muslims etc but I won`t.

BTW Fact state that 6million died in the Holocaust.
If a historian says new research says the figure is closer to 6.5mill then he is a historian doing research.
If a second historian says new research leads him to say that the figure is 5.5mill then he can go to jail in some countires for being a holocaust denier.

Holocaust is a very touchy subject and rightly so. Hence its inclusion into headlines about what can and cannot be taught in schools.

My 11 year old learned about the Holocaust as part of his WWII studies in year 5. As part of my parental responsibility to back up his studies at home, I bought him the book "The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas", and allowed him to watch "Devil`s Arithmetic" and "Jakob the Liar", both cert 12. His teacher was extremely pleased that I had these DVDs, but of course could not allow the children to watch them in class (although she really wanted to and actually considered doing it anyway without telling anyone!).

My boys are both very aware of what happened in WWII, including the Holocaust. As they get older, I shall allow them to watch more disturbing movies and educational DVDs to gain greater understanding.

So I can definitely confirm that the Holocaust is very much a part of the curriculum, and that they will get further education about it during secondary school.

Wasn`t this the story debunked by the BBC ages ago? anyway...

The bottom line to all this fuss? Schools in the UK are indeed teaching about the Holocaust, something British journalists seemed to downplay in their rush to report that one department in one city was not. The e-mailed call to arms cited above was likely the result of a misreading of those already badly-presented news articles.

I was taught about the holocaust at school at both junior and secondary school, although the way it was approached, including showing 15 rated videos to 11 year old kids with no parental consent, led me to refuse to go to history lessons for the best part of my secondary education.

I agree that it is a difficult subject to broach, and I agree that we need to know what happened to prevent it happening again, but in my opinion, some schools approach the subject with an "In your face" type attitude. I find the facts to be horrific enough, without following individual stories, or seeing videos and hearing vivd descriptions of what happened to the victims. These things did not increase my understanding at all, simply made me blank out anything to do with the subject. After being shown Schindlers list in school, along with pauses for our history teacher to describe the feeling of bein gassed and tortured, I had nightmares for about a month, which eventually were stopped by the blocking of the air vent in my room and my dad having to sleep in my room as I was too scraed to be left alone.

I realise that each individual needs different stimuli to learn from this sort of thing, and, as I said I understand that we need to know about the past and remember those who were killed and understand why it happened to learn from it, but I don`t see how traumatising some children to that extent teaches anything other than fear.

I also think age ratings are on films for a reason, and am personally glad that the majority of teachers do not allow films with a higher age rating than the youngest person in the class to be shown.

P.S...I`m not having a go at anyone about their views, this is just my opinion.

It`s interesting to read people saying things like "what is this country coming to" when I was never taught about the Holocaust when I went to school, and that was some 20 years ago. However I never took History as a subject, and I wasn`t taught it before then.
