Anyone know about corkage ?

bowfer (Elite) posted this on Thursday, 18th October 2007, 16:32

Just got a fax from the hotel handling our christmas do.
Their charges for wine are extortionate.
Cheapest bottles of white/red are £18.00 each.
Decent ones are around £21 each.
Ludicrous, even by restaurant/hotel standards.
Anyone know the law surrounding corkage ?
Do we have the right to take our own stuff, subject to a corkage fee, or does the hotel have the right to force us to take their booze ??

I would think that the hotel does have the right to refuse to allow you to take your own booze. You can try negotiating a corkage deal, they may or may not be reasonable, but at least you could ensure that you had some decent plonk.

Failing that you could get everyone a hip flask (or two) for Christmas.

Corkage at my hotel is exactly £1 less than our house wine :)

We got a quote for last years xmas party that worked out the same, more or less, as the cheapest house botte, when you factored in buying a reasonable a load of reasonable bottles yourself.

corkage will not be much cheaper but at least you will be able to keep a track of how much wine you have had. A well know hotel con is to over count bottles at private fucntions so you pay for wine you have not had.

Do you have the `right` to take your own ale to a pub and pay them for the privilege? Do you f***. Whether the hotel allows it is up to them - you certainly can`t, and quite rightly so, insist on it.
P***es me off though - £18+ for a bottle you know they`ve paid about £3 for........ >:(

We will pay the price but we will not count the cost..

Maybe the question should be if a hotel that shafts you over the wine is somewhere to have your do? Vote with your feet and look elsewhere, maybe then they will stop taking the proverbial.
