Page 1 of Tesco Profits break £2bn - Good or Bad? Discuss.

Well, I happily worked for them for 4 years whilst at uni, and i am still a shareholder (who is looking forward to his dividend cheque arriving :D ). It seems that the voices against the supermarket are growing louder, but i always get worried that it is just the anti-capitalist brigade who are all for the small trader (which is what tesco once was) but seem to get p***ed off when they become too successful. Whats your opinion - successful British Retailer or Capitalist Slave Drivers?

This wouldn`t be where Tesco adverse lower prices for some goods while sneakingly add a penny or so onto others...in the hope people won`t notice. (:¦

I saw the trevor show last night. Hard hitting consumer journalism. Big business use loopholes to claim things are cheaper than they are. Shocked. Shocked I tell ya......

Tesco are number 1 for one reason. They have managed to stock sufficient range that when people think `I need x` they automatically think of tescos. I got some cheap shirts and ties for work from there the other day. Good quality, but cheap enough to tinker in computers without worrying about snagging them. And its the same with everything else. Weve got a tescos extra near where i work and its like an aircraft hangar and they stock virtually everything you can think of.

Although, funnily enough, I do my food shopping at sainsburys now. We`ve been shopping at tescos for so long I cant stand the sight of some of their food. And sainsburys have a better range of scoff for the more discerning porker. Its also better quality.

I wonder how Tesco`s suppliers feel about this - in particular Britain`s farming community. They`re routinely screwed into the ground by Tesco in order to get the lowest possible prices.

In fairness, it`s not just Tesco that do this, but then Tesco are the ones who`ve just announced profits of £2bn.

I think that as well BUT, you don`t have to shop there.. nobody forces you. We shop there because we prefer to pay less and as such are just as guilty of screwing the farmers as Tesco are. If you don`t want to screw the farmers, shop at Waitrose. I have shares in tesco so I`m happy but, personally, I think the quality of fruit and meat at Waitrose or Marks is better. You pay more, you get better quality.
